| It's called a pie bald. We had a UK owner years ago who had one, Dino. It's not very common to find at all considering it does so poorly in the show ring, thus reputable breeders do not try to produce pie pups. It's my favorite coloring, I use to be determined to get a pie pup as my 2nd dog, but I gave up wanting to own one since as previously stated, you don't really find them from quality breeders, especially in the US. I do love his coat though. |

| I agree, he has a beautiful coat. He was the only one in the litter to have spots like that. It's cute. |

| Heather is right, Titan's coat is called a piebald. Nicky's littermate is also a piebald, they are really pretty! Nicky's breeder actually get's piebalds quite often. |

| I actually like the piebalds, I believe to be considered piebald they must be 70% white and 30% or less of color. |

| If we could have gotten a female, we would have a silver pi husky instead of our red boy koozie, but he is considered a splash coat as well due to the amount of white he has. |

| Splash and Pie are terms that can be interchanged depending on who you ask about it. The dog up there is a splash (to me) because it has more color than what I'd see on a Pie. (Can't see the other side of the dog to know how much color is over there)
Piebald in coat color genetics is defined as "random spots of color on a white background". So depending on who you asked this dog could be a Pie or a Splash.
A note of warning: If looking for a piebald Siberian be wary of breeders and read up on the real Piebald pattern - as there are unethical breeders breeding Merle Siberians and calling them Piebald. You can find many merle siberian's in rescues these days but true piebald siberians are not quite as common. Piebalds from a breeder will primarily be in racing/working lines/kennels (very rarely in show lines/kennels) and of course unethical/BYBs will have them and they often market them as rare. _________________ |

| I see quite a few piebalds here in central VA (either craigslist or for sale as puppies) because of this:

| To be honest Lisa, that is a very unethical kennel. A lot of the lines are out of mills and the dogs aren't health tested, worked or shown. I wouldn't go to them at all...

Wouldn't / haven't / won't... just stating that they appear to be breeding FOR the piebald gene. We occasionally see a classified add from them marketing their piebald huskies |

| " Puppies are $400 with "Limited" AKC Reg. or $500 with "Full AKC Reg. (Piebald puppies will be $100 more either way). "
That would be why. Like I said - people market Piebald as rare. _________________ |

| Not that this is really relevant to anything - but way back when Pies were considered mismarks or unsaleable and most often were culled at birth. Only a few rare breeders kept Piebald puppies to sell as pets. But in 1972 a Piebald Bitch was being shown and winning. Her name; Marlytuk's Caspera The Ghost. (pictured below) _________________ |

Not worse than Celtic Farms, which has the prettiest red pie Rio but I'd shoot myself before buying from them! |

| Not all of those dogs are mill dogs. even though they're back 3rd or more generations. There are Marlytuk, Monadnock, Karnovanda, Of the Midnight Sun and Foxfire dogs in those pedigrees. _________________ |

Not worse than Celtic Farms, which has the prettiest red pie Rio but I'd shoot myself before buying from them! Nicky is from Celtic. I don't agree w/the amount of litters bred and a few other things, but all her puppies are in great health and dogs are healthy too. I know a lot of people are against Celtic, but our experience was not bad at all. Bridget (breeder) takes back all her puppies and even does rescue work. She's always been there for me, even now with any and all questions I have. I did ask her about testing of hips/eyes and Nicky's father did have that done. I don't know about all her dogs, but I know her dad at least did. Not totally sure about the mom. I know her mom is now retired and lives with a lovely couple not far from my house. Not meaning to open up a can of worms w/this post, just saying my personal experience was not a bad one. Her piebalds are very pretty |

| I realize this thread is a bit dated, but I happened upon Googling for Splash Coat Huskies . I've seen a number of messages over the years about people admonishing others for suggesting that Piebalds are "rare". I would be interested in a discussion of what is rare??? I infer that rare means there are not many or "less" of an item. In common vernacular, "harder to find." I take my splash coat to the Austin Siberian Husky Meetup every month. There is a pool of about 100 Siberians in the group and about 30 -50 show up each time. I've been to 5 meetups of so and never seen another Piebald/Splash coat there. To me that would seem to indicate "rare". I've done some minor research and the Piebald gene for coat variation is subordinate (recessive to) the Irish & Neck genes and only is dominate to the white gene. This too would seem to make it "rare" as it has many opportunities to get trumped. Is it possible we are confusing "rare" with "more valuable"? Do we really think there are just as many Pie balds as "regular" coated huskies? I have not dog in this hunt, figuratively speaking, I do not breed or sell dogs. I am just curious. Jason |

| If you're on Facebook there is a group called colors of the Siberian husky run by a good friend of mine who has dogs tested for the various genes and knows a lot about the inheritance of colors. If that's something you find interesting I suggest looking into it! _________________ |
