Hello! I've been watching this forum for some time and I've finally decided to make an account to ask some questions.

I plan to adopt a husky in the (distant) future. I've been researching a lot about them and been gathering as much info as I can. My first question: is there a notable difference between males and females? I realize that it varies depending on the individual, but in general, is there a difference? From what I've read, females tend to be more independent, intelligent, reserved and aggressive with other females while males are more goofy, playful, affectionate, dominant and territorial. Is this true, for the most part?

Secondly, is it possible to own one in an apartment if you keep them active? I'm an active person and would be going to the beach, walks, park, etc every day to blow off steam. I'm unsure of what my living situation will be by then, however, I might be living in a house but just wanted to make sure.

That's a pretty fair assessment of the difference between males and females, based on experience and stories from here and folks in the breed.   Our ' s breeder said about female Huskies: they don't call them bitches for nothing

There's nothing wrong with having a Husky in an apartment so long as you're willing and able to put in the extra time and effort that an apartment brings about,  such as potty needs, noise control with neighbors,  exercise,  etc.  We raised ours on the 6th floor of an apartment building and the frequent pee trips down the stairs or elevator were sometimes really annoying,  but we managed.  My best friend in the world raised her husky in a tiny studio in Manhattan.  It can be done.  More challenges, but it can be done.  

I call BS on the exercise argument, anyway.  Houses and yards don't equal exercise.  Dogs mostly lay around or sleep no matter where they live, and the bad ones will destroy your house just the same as they'll destroy your apartment.   I think a dog locked up and mentally unstimulated in a giant yard in a giant house is worse off than a dog mentally, physically,  and socially engaged in a tiny apartment.  It's about lifestyle,  not size of living space.

Jeff gave u some good answers. I just want to add if you do appt make sure they allow huskies. Sometimes they can be on the ban list.

I agree with Jeff and Eric, however, I think females get a bad rep, my girl is both of your descriptions. She can be aloof at times, but overall she wants to be near me and thinks she is a lap dog. She is extremely playful and has had zero issues with any type of dog. It really is about the individual dog, and how you two interact. If you feel the instantaneous connection, then that's your dog.

Definitely on this one. There are lots of insurance agencies that have Huskies on the ban list. I won't go into how bogus this is and where they get their "research" from to justify doing this, but the long and the short of it is it's racism for dogs. We own our home but we had to change home insurance companies when we renewed because of our Husky. The previous company we had had Huskies on their ban list. It took some digging to find a company with policies available in our area with a less-restrictive list. And if you hide the fact you have a dog on the list and you're found out, it's grounds for eviction (if you rent) or cancellation of your insurance plan (if you own).
