| Hi everyone I'm hoping to buy my first husky puppy soon. I found the breeder Tim Gorts through the AKC classifieds section. http://www.texashuskypuppies.com/ Should I be worried at all about the puppy's father? His coat appears a bit long compared to the breed standard. Please let me know what you guys think. Puppy's father Grey and White Puppy Puppy's parents - Mom on left, Dad on Right |

| The father is a wooly, but that doesnt mean its puppies will be woolies. To me, the puppy doesnt look like he will be a wooly. But he will carry the gene for it. A reputable breeder wont breed a parent who is known to be a wooly.
Edit...the puppy laying down on the left of the one sitting, looks like he may be a wooly.

| Welcome to the forum!! I too am in search of a puppy, and prefer to stay in Texas to get mine. I would not go to any of the listed breeders on the AKC site, at least until I had more info. This particular breeder is not listed on the SHCA site, which is the site that will have the good breeders listed(For the most part). I know it is frustrating, and it is difficult to wait for the right one to come along. I just don't think this is the right one.
Things to ask the breeder.....does he hip and eye test? Not just a vet check, but does he have OFA and CERF papers on each bred dog? How old are his dogs? Does he show or work his dogs and what titles does his dogs have? Is he registered with SHCA (Siberian Husky Club of America, and not just AKC)? What are the pedigrees of his sire and dam? Does he offer a health guarantee?
I realize that you probably just want a pet, me too, but the health of the puppy is important, so important. If this breeder does not have CERF and OFA clearances on his sire and dam, then you will be purchasing a dog with questionable health.
The male does seem quite wooly, but I don't know, the pics are hard to tell, same with the female, she looks out of standard to me as well. They are both pretty dogs. I just never felt comfortable when I did stumble across his website when I have been looking for my own bundle of joy. Since his site is a little strange to navigate, I will ask you, how much was he asking for his pups? To me he seems like a back yard breeder, and if he can't answer any of the questions I just mentioned above, I would hold onto my money and look elsewhere. Also is this the only breeding pair he has?
I will add to Jimmy's answer. Yes they probably will make a nice pet. They don't necessarily have to be proven in the show ring or in working, but it helps if they do, to know the dogs are healthy. There will always be debate here on what constitutes a good pet. To me having the health clearances and pedigrees as well as health guarantees are the most important to me. I want a dog who will be healthy a long time, and not suffer from a genetic issue, because the breeder never checked his breeding dogs. |

| Agreed, if you're concerned with the breed standard and all the reasons why it is important, then you shouldn't get one of these puppies because this male should not have been bred.
To me it seems that if a pure bred dog is your choice, then you should follow the protocols to get the best, most sound puppy possible given the breed standard.
There are some very relevant health concerns with breeding pure bred dogs that could affect the health of your puppy, so it's always a safer best to support breeders who have the standard as a priority.

| The sire is a wooly, he looks very similar to some of the dogs from a big byb kennel here. I wouldn't purchase a puppy from these people for all of the reasons stated above. They have no information on their dogs on their website either.
I would start on the SHCA website like Renee mentioned. Not all reputable breeders are a part of the parent club HOWEVER it is the best place to start when looking for reputable breeders. If the breeders listed on the SHCA site don't have any puppies or breedings planned, you can always ask for referrals to other breeders.
The most important part for me when looking for a new puppy is health testing.
