| So the past two days Klaus has had diarrhea, this is the first time since we've got him that he's had abnormal movements. Last night he had us up all night needing to go and went in his cage once and all over himself. He's been acting fine otherwise and still eating and drinking but we decided it was best to take him in. His stool came back normal, no bacteria or anything but please let me know what you all think of this vet's answer for us: So pretty much right away he blamed in on snow.Within two minutes of seeing him. Snow?! How can you just say oh yeah it's the snow he's been eating too much snow and there is chemicals and salt in snow. He's ate snow for the last two months it's been on the ground and no problems. I make sure he doesn't eat it when we're out on walks but there is no salt in our backyard. He then gave him a shot to help with the loose stools and some medication. He told me not to feed him for 24 hrs after his last incident. So as of right now I cannot feed him until 7am tomorrow since he had diarrhea this morning. If he has it again tonight I can't feed him until 24 hrs from that time.... I feel like this can end up being a long time for him not to eat? So even though I was already skeptical of his course of action this is where it really got me... he told me it was best to go home with a small bag of Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet and for him to eat that over the next week. However after reading the ingredients on this food I can see they're horrible. The first ingredient I think is like wheat, and then after that chicken by product! How is this supposed to make him feel better when it's worse than the dry food he is already on? My fiance and I have been considering finding a new vet after a couple visits now, but I really think this will be our last visit with this vet. Am I overreacting or does this seem like a $200 diagnosis pulled out of his butt?

| The foods that vets recommend are usually terrible and they probably are paid by those companies to sell them/suggest them. There are tons of reasons he could have diarrhea and I highly doubt the small traces of salt would do anything. If the snow was pink from the sun creating bacteria to grow I think you would have noticed him eating that. Anyways, if it were me I would get a new vet and look up reviews online for the best one for you. Try giving your dog chicken and rice for a few days to see if that helps firm things up. Diarrhea isn't that big a deal when they are young unless it lasts for a long time or their behavior changes because their bodies are growing, immune systems/diets are adapting, and exercise limits are all changing. |

| My vet tries ID food at times for my Lexi but agrees TOW and freshselect are ok cause she had issues with their food. Normal course for my dogs is no food for 24 hrs then chicken and rice weaned back to normal food over week while monitoring stool.
Most vets push their food so don't be surprised if you switch and hear again. The important thing is to be able to have dialogue with your vet that makes you happy. I told both vets at my clinic my dog gets sick least on what she eats now and I don't want to play too much with it. Both understand now but we had reasonable talk to get to that point. They also noted all the foods I have tried that she does not tolerate. That is why I like my vet if it helps. |

| We didn't feed him for 24 hrs and he seemed to have a normal movement this morning so hopefully that means the medicine helped. We fed him this morning as well so hoping all goes well throughout the day. I don't think I'm going to use their food... maybe I can give it back to them and get my money back since we didn't open it. When I mentioned to them I didn't like the ingredients they said "yeah we don't either but it's short term". If you don't like the ingredients why do you carry it? They also entered his weight wrong in the computer, he's 36 pounds and they put him in as 45? Good thing I noticed or we might have got a higher dose of medication or heartworm. We're definitely going to look into a new vet that we feel is more observant but I feel it will be hard considering this one we're leaving had 5 star reviews (somehow). The only thing I can think of that might have gave him this is we bought a new brand of bully stick, so I'll ease those in once he's feeling better and see what happens. I'd like to find the cause of it so we can stay away from it. How long did you do the chicken and rice diet before introducing their dog food? I feel like he won't want his dry food again after having chicken ! |

| Normal course for my dogs is no food for 24 hrs then chicken and rice for 24 hours and a partial chicken and rice weaned back to normal food. As far as the food I do not like the brand but are there other items in it that they are looking for ie the Gastrointestial part. Not sure all of the ingredients as most places do not do reviews of food that is for intentional therapeutic uses. So they suggestion the short term use is not too part IMO. I had my cat on a UTI diet every once in a while and it is hard to find beside the Vet Rx food. They might be steering you to a low fat or low fiber diet. But put all of it together and I say a new vet might be needed. Or another vet in the office. I know a lot of people who love there vet but they had a different vet at the practice that they would NOT use. |

| So much for hoping things hold up today, while we were at work between 12pm-430pm he went all over himself and his crate again after having a normal stool this morning :/ We called the vet and they want us to wait another 24-48 hours. I feel like that is too long for him not to be eating? |

| Believe it or not dogs can go several days without eating and be fine. Not the case with water, but it is the case with food.
I am not saying you should do it or that I support that prescription, but the amount of time itself is not an issue. |

| I guess I just worried about waiting that time since he's a puppy and will be missing out on nutrition. So tomorrow will be a week since this has started. We waited the 24 hrs to feed him and he didn't go to the bathroom within that time since he didn't eat. The next morning we fed him chicken and rice, not too much. He didn't go all day again until 2am in his crate again and all over himself Not to mention the odor... is horrid. Much stronger than it usually is. So I'm at the point now wondering do I just keep feeding the chicken and rice and hope it improves? Hopefully the vet can get us back in Monday morning. |

| I'm out of my league here, but some dogs do have allergies to rice ... one of the simplest foods going but some dogs do.
One of things that bothers me is the odor - okay, feces doesn't smell sweet, but it shouldn't be that rank ...
Uh, gang if that's the case then what should he do?? I'm looking for an alternative for her since the pup's continuing to have problems on rice as well - - - suggestions? _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| I did see in a couple other boards on the issue an egg and veggie diet worked for some? Maybe a probiotic as well? It smells pretty rank not like his normal poops, his tests came back normal but I think I'm going to have the vet do another to be sure.
I think I'm going to give the chicken and rice a day or two more and if no improvement try the egg one. Any idea on how many eggs/veggie for him? He's 4.5 months and 37 lbs. Usually he ate 3 cups of food a day (maybe we were overfeeding). I feel like he's slimmed down a bit the past couple days which worries me :/ but his personality still seems fine and is drinking water. |

| Haley, keep trying the pumpkin, about 2 tablespoons, once or twice a day for a few days, sometimes puppy tummies take a few days to settle down. you may be feeding too much grease with the chicken, boil up a boneless skinless chicken breast, it's as lean as it gets, so high protein low fat. Sometimes with upset tummies added grease will just continue the problem. For a filler you can use lightly steamed green beans, try 1/2 to 1 cup. Hard boil your eggs, not scrambled(again you have to add grease to scramble), an egg or two, depending what else you're feeding, although I would try continuing with the chicken. Lastly some pups that don't respond well to pumpkin, do better with plain yogurt a couple of tablespoons(I will use greek, but doesn't matter). I would stick to 2 or 3 small meals until he feels better and everything is firm again. 3 cups of food per day may be a little much for him, depends really on how much exercise he is getting right now, but three cups should be max, and at a year old I would slowly cut him down to 2 cups, most huskies eat around 25% less food than what is recommended. Btw, Miya eats between 1 and 2 cups a day, depending on how active she is. I hope Klaus gets to feeling better soon...... |

| Thank you. So yesterday he had a pretty solid stool, I was very happy about it but then pretty mushy later today. We keep going back and fourth. I hope I'm feeding the right amount. He gets a chicken breast each meal, rice, and them a spoonful of pumpkin. I hope what I have is the correct kind of pumpkin. Doesn't say pie filling...but there is a recipe for pie on the back. Its called pumpkin puree. I'm not even sure if I should be cooking it? Stupid question but I really don't know how pumpkin works. |

| Haley, it should say pure pumpkin puree(the recipe will say to add sugar, right?) look at the ingredients should say pumpkin and that's it. You can lightly warm it or feed cold, doesn't matter, you can freeze it too and save for another time, or feed frozen as a treat. The cooked chicken I would split that up to a 1/2 cup chopped up chicken 3 or 4 times a day. You may be over feeding the chicken, rice make sure it is white not the minute rice kind and stick to under 1/2 cup 3 or 4 times a day....I believe I wrote a recipe in another thread...let me see if I can locate it. |

| keep the rice water(should be almost a milky white look to it), and use the rice water during the 12-24 hour fast. An excellent mash to use up to 5 days is
-¼-1/2 cup 100% Canned Pumpkin(pure) -½ cup white rice (non minute) -1-2 tablespoons unflavored plain live culture yogurt (using at least 2 to 10 billion viable bacterial organisms) -Plain boiled chicken, no salt(shredded 1/4 to 1/2 cup) -¼ cup warm water (rice water)
The pumpkin provides the right amount of fiber to firm, the rice is for the binder(binds the looseness in the intestine to firm up), the yogurt is to put back good flora in gut, the chicken is a bland form for the needed protein, the water prevents dehydration.
Haley, try this, I would half the recipe or even third the recipe and feed 2(if halved) or 3(if third) times a day. You may have to play around with it somewhat since he's a puppy, so doubling and then break up into 4 small meals for the day, may work better. The key is to feed smaller meals until he is back to normal. |

| Yeah it has all the ingredients to add on the back so I think it's the right kind. Says 100% pure pumpkin just didn't know if it needed to be cooked or not. He's been eating twice a day because we work so in the morning and in the evening. He hasn't went to the bathroom in 24 hrs now so I'm just waiting and hoping it's normal. He has seemed a little more lethargic than usual though. When we're home he's just kind of been laying around and sleeping a lot more. He played good at the dog park yesterday though and will play if you provoke him. He also has a dog friend coming over today so as long as they play well I guess I won't be too worried about him being so sleepy. |

| It totally depends - generally, the younger the pup and the more frequent and more liquid the diarrhea, the more dire the consequences. You need to assess hydration status - stickiness of the gums, elasticity of the skin etc - if in doubt, call your vet. Dehydration in a young pup is an emergency. Even in older dogs, frank dehydration can be emergent. |
