| We're going to be bringing a new addition (Husky puppy) home on Saturday (and maybe even sooner). We currently have a 1 year old Husky. Our current Husky hasn't been around other dogs much unfortunately, but he IS great with our children (ages 1 to 11) and even great with our 2 cats (always under supervision of course). Can anyone give me suggestions on how to best introduce them and get them off on the right foot? Any and all advice is very much appreciated! Thanks so much! |

| Have them meet outside on neutral ground , do not get them excited or let them play or interact at all, and take them for a walk together. Â I realize a puppy won't walk "well" right now, but do your best and this will work perfectly.
Before bringing the puppy inside remove all toys and bones and food from the floor. |

| What Jeff said is exactly the way to do it, its what it says in books, on the internet, and from professionals. Its how I handled it anytime I brought home a new puppy and the existing dog ranged in ages from 1 year, up to 14 yrs old. My Malamute was 14 when I brought home TWO new puppies (Anuschka and her brother Blitz), I had them meet on neutral ground, had the puppies in their crate etc....when Blitz passed away unexpectedly, Anuschka was 4 1/2 when I brought home a new puppy, Malukhai. i did the same thing. When Anuschka and Malukhai passed away, I brought home my current boy, Kohdi, to an empty house so there was no issue. He was one year old when I brought home his new lil "sis", Mishka...only I couldnt/didnt have them meet on neutral ground. I can tell you, from my experience, there was no difference. That doesnt mean don't do it, by all means if you can have them meet on neutral ground, do...but if you cant, I dont really think there is *harm* in it. Like Jeff said, its important toys and food are off the floor though. I can tell you from my experience as well that when you set the new puppy down, hover over him (kinda keep somewhat a barrier of *protection*) because Kohdi's initial reaction was wanting to play with the puppy, and with Mishka only being 8 wks old (and TINY) and Kohdi a year old, there is just too much a size difference...one swipe of Kohdi's paw and Mishka became slightly airborne...the puppy would also be easily trampled, possibly hurt. I also, within a relatively short amount of time after meeting, put Mishka in her crate which allowed all the sniffing and more meeting to happen while better protected. Kohdi eventually laid down next to the crate and just kept her company They get along very well, Mishka is 10 months now (lil brother/sister spats here and there, haha) but I honestly noticed no difference at all in meeting in the house, versus on neutral ground (which experts do recommend). Jeff also gave great advice on walking them together too, Ive done that with all my dogs and it actually HELPS your leash training of the puppy. Congrats on your new puppy!!! |
