Hello I'm am happy to be joining the forum, I own two dogs a Siberian Huskyx Dutch shepherd and a akita thing. Decided to join to get some help with my psycho child. LOL

Haha thank you feral looking is just how i would describe them, we scare people at petsmart and petco quite often when we go for our training days. The girls say thank for the compliments! (I know Kuma looks like a guy, she is a very masculine female, haha)

Very cool dogs I met a Dutch Shephard a few weeks ago (I had never heard of them before) he was massive!!! he was all white (more of a cream color) and at 9 months was already 130 lbs!!!

Thank you! I must say, however, that I had never heard of a wooly until Ami's fur kept growing and growing and growing...I thought he looked strange for a husky...than I found out about woolies. And that I lied to my husband when I said a siberian needs very little grooming (my first one from many years ago really didn't, sleek most of the year, coat blow twice a year and the undercoat came out with no help from me).

Thats actually extremely odd. Dutchies usually ONLY come in brindle and the variations of brindle if we want to go with the working one. The next set of dutchies are the rough haired (think of a dark colored belgian lakenois) and the long haired (look like brindle groendals) that come in 'yellow' occassionally and then their are the dutch malinois (a Dutch Shepherd with the markings and colors of a belgian malinois). This is because more often than not the Dutch Shepherd is mixed with working dogs like german shepherds, belgian malinois, pitbulls and rotties in order to produce a better Dutchie, at least overseas when they are producing dogs for work. A cream one is actually very unusual and one that big to, pyrrha is about the size of the normal female Dutchie at 11 months is around 45 pounds, she most likely will be 50-60 by the time shes 2 years old. The largest male Dutchie i have heard of was at I think 90 pounds since they usually range from 60-80 for the males. I can't even imagine what a 130 pound Dutch shepherd be like, all that energy and drive packed into a 130 pound puppy. LOL I am apart of the dutch shepherd forum as well since i was considering getting a pure one eventually, I wonder if their have been any more outliers like this one I would love to see it.

Dutchies are fairly uncommon since they are a dog that is mainly used for sport and work, rarely are they family pets. Like the malinois they are hard to obtain sometimes since they prefer if the dog is involved in some sort of activity. We actually were on the fence if pyrrha was truly a dutchie mix but she has many shepherd tendencies that are similar to dutchies and malinois that its hard to deny. Kuma is also assumed to be some odd mix, we assumed dutchie as well or at least shepherd, we go with akita shar-pei looking thing for now until we can do a dna test. LOL

Ok, now I hope I didnt give misinformation. The company I work for contracts with the military, and I was on a military family housing property when I met this dog. The woman was walking him (not having an easy time either, haha) and this dog came right over to me. As I'm petting him, I asked her if he was a white German Shephard (but as I asked her this I'm looking at this MASSIVE head, I swear it was like 1 1/2-2 x the size of a German Shephard head) and she said "no, he's a...Dutch Shephard, he's only 9 months old" and I must have looked at her strange cuz she then added "I know ,right, he's 9 months and already weighs 130 lbs." and stupid me says "wow, he weighs more than I do" Anyways, he looked exactly like a German Shephard, but his coat was a white/cream color and everything about him was Large...like, picture a German Shephard but Great Dane size. It's possible I mis-remember the breed name but I know it was from that region cuz I remember thinking its near Germany.

It might of been a White Swiss shepherd, Dutchies typically look more like malinois or belgian shepherds than they do gsds in when they come in other colors. The exception would be when a dutchie has recent german shepherd ancestry. Then its really hard to tell the puppies apart, the brindle ones are called Dutch shepherd x, the german shepherd style style black and tan ones are German shepherd x, at least if these are like knpv or ddr style dogs.



From a google search here is a decent photo of the profile / 3/4s view of a Dutchie. You can see that they look less gsd and more like their cousins the belgian malinois. Also you can see why we considered that Kuma might of been an odd cross of one with either pit or shar-pei or both.



A yellow long-hared dutchie an a brindle long haired dutchie. If it looked like a giant german shepherd I'm gonna go with it just a white german shepherd or a swiss white shepherd which is kinda the same thing. And considering he's 130 pounds that 50 pounds heavier than average for malinois and dutchies that are built especially light weight for their work.

Here is a short-haired swiss shepherd, looks pretty similar to the dutchie up there.

They are definitely one of my favorite dog breeds. However if pyrrha proves anything they aren't for the faint of heart. It might of been less work to get a pure husky that get one mixed with a Dutchie haha. But that brindle was calling me and not being adopted for a month i just had to go see her.

Yes, that looks like him. I dont remember the ears being quite *that* big (those things look like wings!!) but yes, I believe its this dog I saw. I apologize.

No need to apologize, actually i really like these type of convo's. I'm fascinated by dog genetics so when i hear something off like that i get really into it. Thats one the reasons i love my two dogs, the brindle coloration is one of my favorite dog genes along with the husky agouti and learning to correctly identify dog breeds is another favorite. Sorry if i came off intense I just got like really interested because on the dutch shepherd forum their are many threads about identifying if dogs are a dutch shepherd mix or not since the breed is not often seen. So they often go over alot of what occurs in the breed and that actually motivated me to do more research myself on dog genetics. So sorry about that I basically got like excited.

Welcome to the forum fellow Texan. I had a blast reading this thread. I am by no means an expert of anything, lol, look at my girl, so I am fascinated with the mixes as well. I have to ask you though, here in Texas Catahoula Leopard Dog's are extremely common, and that's what I see with yours(Pyrrha), mixed with a gsd decedent(dutch, belgian, german). I too am fascinated, in that there was another convo on another thread about eye color. Most people assume when they see blue eyes or one blue eye that the dog is automatically part husky. I am curious, if dogs that are not husky, i.e. Catahoula Leopard Dogs for instance, have husky in them or if this is a recessive gene from somewhere else? Please do not take my questions in a wrong manner. I am curious. I ask these questions, because when we start to water down our beloved animals, we have to train and learn how to respond with more than just the one breed(if this makes any sense), yes my girl is probably just a mutt, but a mutt with two distinctly different breed traits. Many people have said she is a poorly bred husky. She was sold to me as a 50/50 mix husky/wolf dog, and through my research I believe she is husky/gsd. I enjoy the conversation, and sometimes I admit, it would be way easier if I had a pure husky, because at least I would understand some of her quirks, although I would never trade her for anything.

Btw, thank you for rescuing that beauty, whatever she is breed wise, she is absolutely lovely.

ETA:"it would be way easier if I had a pure husky" this statement in no way means that a pure husky would be easier to have, lol, in a way, she is probably too easy, and when I do get a pure I definitely know I will have my hands full, so please no one think I meant anything bad by that statement......

You have nothing to apologize for, the pics with the information was very informative to me!! When someone is talking to me in person, with their dog, I only absorb maybe half of what theyre saying...Im paying more attention to the dog, haha. But when I read something, or ask a question and the answer is explained to me, I am much better about retaining that information.
