| Sooo probably for 3 weeks now Bandit hasn't had a solid stool. Aol have been loose or diarrhea. All test came back negative for parasites in stool test. I've tried rice and it doesn't seem to help. I've been poking around on google bjt nothing. Any insite? |

| Tony, the normal culprit there is that he's getting too much food and it has to go somewhere. I'm not going back, but memory tells me that you're not overfeeding him - about two cups a day?
So you're gonna get used to my questions, right? What are you feeding him, how much, how often? That's three questions, I'd like to see three answers boy. << oh shit, ducking >> You say it's been for about three weeks now and if I remember right, you haven't had him for much longer than that, what was he being fed before and how were his stools then.
The other thing to consider is the quantity of treats you're using in training ... people don't think about them as "food" but they are and need to be considered since they're often high protein / high calorie.
On the subject of rice, I cook mine like an oriental, kinda dry and sticky; I've seen a lot of people here who make a real wet mixture - almost of the consistency of oatmeal. If you're one of the "wet" crowd, that may be part of the problem - too much liquid in what should be food and again, it has to go somewhere. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| The food is pro pac performance puppy food, bag says for her age and weight 3- 4 cups a day. Currently I do 3 to 4 feedings a day. All are 1 cup quantity. When I give her rice I use my rice cooker( best item in my kitchen lol I love that thing) when we go potty outside I give her half of a treat everytime. She is very good. She will go sit by the back slider and wait for me to let her out. The treats are skinny treats chicken and rice flavor |

| I know that she ( Bandit should be a boy! ) isn't going to like what I'm going to suggest but 3 - 4 cups a day is a lot of food. I'd cut her back to three cups - all the time - and see how things shape up (pun intended) maybe even drop back to 3/4 of a cup 3 times a day. As an adult she should probably get about 2 cups a day.
You didn't answer my question about what she was eating and how her stools were then or has she been on propac all the time? Reason I'm asking, while that has a good rating, the second ingredient on the list is corn. Not a component of a really good food.

| Corn is probably the culprit, Miya was this way, until she just refused to eat her food, thought she was picky, but once I cut out grain, bye bye loose stools, overfeeding is probably another problem. I would look for a grain free puppy or all stages dog food, and if you give an equivalent of one cup of treats feed what Al suggests, if not then 1 cup 3 times a day is fine until she's a year old, then cut down to 2 cups per day. |

| She's always been on the pro pac even with the breeder, I makes sense though, ever since I've been feeding her more I think it's consistent with the problem. What would suggest as a puppy food. I have about 30lbs left of the pro pac that I'm still gonna use |

| Tony, because I don't know your budget, nor what foods are easily available I would recommend you look at these things when getting a good dog food, petfoodadvisor.com lists foods under a ranking system. Things to look for grain free, or limited ingredients food, look at the label and avoid corn. You can feed puppy or an all life stage food, the package will say this, one food I will avoid is Blue any products, many huskies don't do well with it, and Miya still had loose stools. A member posted elsewhere on a similar thread and suggested natural balance LID, so that may work, again read label. also there is a long thread here under feeding/nutrition that's titled what are you feeding, for some ideas. Imho, if money is not a problem Fromm (not the gold line), is one of the best out there. i hoped I helped. |

| It surprised me that the Limited Ingredients blends seemed to overall rank lower than the "generic" dog foods from the same manufacturer. Also would have expected the Fromm's Gold Line to have been their top of the line and it definitely isn't. As I said elsewhere, I do a lot of my shopping on line since mileage cost are outlandishly prohibitive. Most of you all can go into town for a forgotten item - but for me it's 150 miles one way to get to a decent store, hence the online purchases. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| I'm gonna look into other foods then. My aunt was telling me that the treats were the cause. I was giving her half of one everytime she went potty every time |

| Tony, depends on the treat, if you're giving say milk bones, then yes, corn is in there, look at your treats and see what type of ingredients are in there. Also you don't want Bandit being dependent on treats to do everything. Praising her will encourage just as well, and another facet of bonding. When she goes potty tell her good girl and give her a little pat, it means more to her than treats believe me. Miya has never been a treat kind of dog, but loves her praise. |

| UPDATE! I've cut back to 3 feedings of 3/4 cup a day... Any chance she gets she is sniffing the floors and licking everywhere. Maybe she is hungry? Or just being a puppy? |

| Probably both, do you give her any chews or things she can eat, puppy approved of course, it will help with teething and help with her being hungry. Watch her stools, but i do believe that you cut her from 4 cups a day down to 2 and a quarter, she's probably hungry. Obviously you have to feed her consistently, but until she's a year old 1 cup 3 times a day should not effect her poops, the corn will. With that thought, going grain free and 1 cup 3 times a day and then look at her poops, then adjust amount if still loose. |

| Tony, I was under the assumption that you meant Purina pro pack, so when you go to dogfoodadvisor it is different, I haven't a clue why it ranks it a 5 star when the second ingredient is CORN!!!!!! Then if you are adding rice to the mix, she is getting a ton of grain. You need a grain free dog food, either a grain free puppy or grain free all life stages. I'm sticking my neck out, but I promise you if you feed her grain free her poops will be solid, you can feed 3 cups a day until she is a year, so she isn't so hungry. Miya was exactly the same way, pudding poops, I switched to grain free and poops are solid. I too was feeding her 4 sometimes 5 cups a day, because she was so hungry. When I switched I fed 3 cups a day until she was a year then went to a totally different feeding regime, but if I fed strictly kibble she would be eating no more than 2 cups a day, grain free.
I know this is frustrating, but i am giving you a straight answer. |

| From what I understand, Fromm is one of the best dog foods out there, what I read the gold line is not the best, however, if money is not a problem, I would start with Fromm Puppy Gold Dog Food, it is formulated for puppies, go with the pink bag, do NOT get for large breed. The puppy does include rice, but at a year you can switch to their 4 star line which have a ton of variety, and most do not include rice. There are other brands you would need to look up, since I don't have specifics atm, Orijen, Acana, and Earthborne, to name a few. |

| UPDATE so I purchase taste of the wild. Ingredients looked good no corn or grain. Eating habits have changes. I mix about 30% new food 70% old food. She eats very very slow, she's not excited anymore about food. Is it cause there is new food in there and she is unsure? Is it normal for the switch? |

| How old is she now? A lot of times when you switch to a higher quality food, they don't like it as much at first. Some do, some don't... The lower quality dog food is like doggie crack to them but I think once you get the old stuff used up, she will get better about it. She also might be getting the nutrition she needs from less food since its better for her. You can add a little plain canned pumpkin (1-2 tbsp) to her food to help with the transition. Depending on age, 2 cups a day might be enough, or even too much. Diz is 53 lbs and 20 months now, and if he's very active eats 3/4 cup in the am and 1 cup in the evening. If its a lazy day is 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night. If I feed him 2 cups he gets chunky! |

| I had the same problems with Gaia. We were training her with Beggin Strips broken up into pieces and feeding her Royal Canin at the recommendation of our vet. It ended up being a BAD idea because both of those are full of grains. We ended up switching her to Simply Nourish High Protein Puppy Food from Petsmart, and switching the Beggin' Strips out for Zuke's Grain Free Mini's, which she loves, and are the perfect size for training. She complained at me when I first started transitioning her to the new puppy food, but now she loves it. Her poop has cleared up a LOT since we first got her, and is nearly completely solid now. Hope it works out for you! |

| when i first got my puppy, he has the runs so bad it looked like he was peeing when pooping! ( sorry for explicit info)! i boiled plain rice and some chicken mixed them together and gave it to him for 3 days, his poo started to get harder slowly, i then took 1/4 of the chicken and rice mix and mixed in his food i wanted him eat, slowly every day id take a bit of rice and chicken away and replace it with his food, he was solid in a week, and eating dog food without the runs!
i always do this to him when he's got the runs and it usually clears up in a day or two now that he's older
don't give up! |

| UPDATE
Literally at my witts end here. It has been close to 2 months without solid poop. First couple droppings are soft but have shape then when she moves to another spot its even softer if not diarrhea. We were at the vet Tuesday and her anal gland did need to be expressed so had that done. No parasites or worms. Going tomorrow for something with her skin. She keeps biting the back of her leg and its getting really red. I just don't know. I've never seen a dog go this long with non solid poop. WTF is wrong with her ugh!!!!!! =( =( =/ =/ I don't know ugh this is killing me it's just a mess to try and clean up and aggravating...... sorry for the rant but it feels better to get it out even if it's just on here. Someone have any insight. About a week into switching foods so far and she likes the new food |

| Tony, keep going with the slow food transition. Go to the store and buy a can of pure pumpkin(not the pie kind) and give a couple tablespoons to her, refridge the rest and about 2 tablespoons the next day, you should see some difference in a couple of days. The loose poops is a reason for the anal sac expressing, so firming up is a benefit to her too. I keep a can on hand for when Miya's tummy acts up. She is young, getting used to new food, so patience is important, although I know it's frustrating' Good luck, it will soon work out. |
