| Subject: should I put potty pad inside the crate? Sat Nov 08, 2014 11:21 pm | |
| Hello everyone, I am getting my 8 weeks old puppy home next week, but there is still one question I want to ask. I have to go to school abt 3 or 4 hours per day. I decide to let him stay in the crate when there is nobody home. But I know that puppy can not hold for this long, so should I divide the crate into two parts (his bathroom and bedroom)?? Please help |

| There's an old maxim about training puppies that goes like so: Start them off as you want them to be. While 3 to 4 hours can be a long time, in my opinion, your best bet would be to take him out and tire him out before you leave for school and with luck he'll sleep until you get home. So my answer would be to not use a potty pad. As I said, that would be my approach though YMMV. |

| Hello and welcome. I agree with Al. Hopefully he can hold his bladder that long if he is tired out. However, if you can have someone come and let him out after a couple of hours, that would be ideal. Also, if the space in his crate is small enough that there is just enough room to turn around and lay down, he will be less likely to eliminate in his crate. Another thing I want to add is that a potty pad, or anything like a potty pad, such as a blanket, a sleeping pad, or a stuffed animal, can and will be shredded to bits and possibly ingested, with tragic results. It is not worth the risk, so please don't do it. Enjoy your new puppy and I hope to hear from you often! |

| Also, potty pads encourage "going" inside. While it may seem like a good idea when he is young, it actually is counter productive and can extend the time of potty training. First he thinks it's ok to go inside, then it is confusing to a puppy when all of a sudden he's not allowed to do what you encouraged him to do in the first place. It is an especially bad idea to have it in the crate. The crate should be your dog's safe place. Dogs do not like to potty where they sleep and encouraging it in the crate is not what you want to be doing.
The search function at the top of the page will take you to almost any question you could have. Search for potty training or crate training and read those existing threads to help you. |

| Thanks for help. I decide to buy both fences and crate and create an safe area (including where I put the potty pad) for him when there is nobody home. I will feed him in the crate and let him sleep in the crate. |
