| Hello Everyone This seems like an awesome forum with tons of useful info! My name is Pat and I just recently got a Sibe. I did a lot of research before choosing a husky. But being that I live in Colorado, have much open room and go hiking/excersizing a lot I thought it'd be the perfect dog. I don't have the dog yet because he is only 6 weeks old so I have to wait a couple of more weeks but I just wanted to get some advice on what I need to have before I get him and my big question was what kind of food you guys are giving your husky puppys ? So far I have a Kennel, toy, leash, collar, dog tag etc.. Anyone might happen to know a good vet. in Colorado Springs area ? Thanks for looking and helping |

| Welcome to the forum! We have quite a few members based in Colorado so I'm sure they will have some good information regarding the vet. As far as food, huskies tend to do better on grain free foods. Whatever you decide to feed just make sure you do a very slow switch from the old food the breeder is feeding to the new food. It should take 1-2 weeks to be fully transitioned and you want to do a 25% change at a time and increase. I currently feed my boy Blue Buffalo Wilderness, but have fed Taste of the Wild along with a lot of members here who have recommended it. Dogfoodadvisor.com has great information on grain free foods that are good quality. _________________ |

| Most of the active Colorado posters I can think of are in the Denver area (us included). I don’t know if we have any regular posters in the Springs to give any recommendations. I’ve had pretty good luck going off of internet reviews for vets when I don’t have personal recommendations.
Welcome to the forum! Your little guy looks so adorable! If you don’t mind sharing, where are you getting him from? Do you have any names picked out?
In terms of supplies, I know you said you already have a kennel, but make sure that if it doesn’t come with one, find some kind of a divider so that the pup doesn’t have access to the full thing if it’s an adult sized crate. The reason being is for potty training. Dogs don’t like to eliminate where they sleep, so you don’t want the space to be big enough for them to have an area they designate as a “potty area” separate from where they lay.
Welcome again! |

| Hi Pat, welcome to the board! I was in your shoes very recently. We got our new puppy 8 days ago and those last couple of weeks are the hardest to wait. Like a lot of other members here, I have transitioned our puppy to a grain free diet. She is doing great on it. If you transition slowly, you shouldn't have too much trouble. I would say to avoid doing too many special treats, as those seem to cause runny poop more than anything. If you want to use treats to train her, measure out her daily ration of food and use some of that to treat her when she is learning new things. Speaking of food, we got our girl a slow feed bowl, as we have heard Siberians have a tendency to inhale their food. She loves it! I think it gives her a mental challenge, which she enjoys. Another thing is, it seems as though Siberians get bored with their toys really quickly. I would say to make sure you have a lot of different toys on hand for your little one. Our breeder told us to be really careful and only get very sturdy toys, as Siberians can be incredibly destructive. She said to look for toys made for Rottweilers. Our vet said not to get any toys that are too hard, like the hard Nylabones, as they can break their teeth on those, which can affect their adult teeth. She said the flexible Nylabones are fine. Also, it is super important not to use any rope toys, as those can be ingested with tragic results. They should always be supervised with any toy, because you just never know. Can't be too safe with a husky. We have also found that the Kong brand of toys, made for aggressive chewers, seem to be really good. Our vet gave us a toy called the Busy Buddy, and they seem very tough, as well. Oh, BTW: I used to live near Colorado Springs when I was a kid, but that was a long time ago. Beautiful area, though -- perfect for a Siberian! I bet you can't wait! Blaze is an awesome name! Looking forward to hearing more from you! |
