| Hi Everybody, Tomorrow it will be 10 days till we get our husky! We just went and bought all our puppy stuff and are so excited, we can hardly wait! Of course, this makes me wonder how you all got your huskies? Where did you get them? What made you pick this breed? Do you have any funny stories you are willing to share? Please, help entertain us with the stories of how you got your huskies! The more stories, the better! Carrie & Olivia |

| Carrie and Olivia, so excited for you two.
My Miya, where to start......my very first dog I was around I was way younger than Olivia, our girl Toni was almost the same age as me, she was a husky/german shepherd. She was funny, sweet, full of energy, a great family dog. She had the markings of the gsd and the body and attitude of a husky. I loved her to pieces.
Fast forward, met my husband, we always wanted a dog, but we lived in Florida and our property wasn't suitable for more than a toy poodle, neither of us like small dogs, we decided to wait. Moved her from Florida, after nearly 18 years of waiting, my husband came home and told me of a cute puppy he saw in town. My disclaimer, Miya is from a back yard breeder, or byb, I was unaware of the downsides of not going to a reputable breeder, end disclaimer. So I went to see these puppies, they were 12 days old, and the tiniest, only one with a white dot and silver fur, and what I guessed, and correctly, only one with brown eyes. I feel in love with her. She has far exceeded my expectations of a byb husky, she's sweet, loving, gentle, and way too smart. The only downside from our decision of going to the byb is she is not breed standard, and hopefully she will stay healthier than a horse that she is. I could tell you a lot of stories, but that wouldn't be fair of me to hog this thread, lol. |

| LOL, hog away! It's great to hear how you finally got your husky after 18 years! BYB or not, Miya is a gorgeous girl! She sounds like a real sweetheart, too. BTW: I have a friend with a GSD/Husky mix and she is really neat. I adore her. Thanks for sharing! Carrie

| Congrats to you guys on getting a Husky! You're going to have loads of fun with your new member of the family. I copied this from my other post "Introducing Pretty Girl Coco", lol. The story of how I got Coco. So, last year on April 19, 2013 my first Siberian Husky, Rosetta, died. I was devastated about it. I wanted another Husky, but I wasn't ready, so I wanted to wait for a year before getting another one. Fast forward to April of 2014. I decided to get another finally. I started looking everywhere. I wanted a puppy, as in 13 weeks old or younger. I finally found a husky at the beginning of June. She was 7 months old, older than I wanted, but I decided to go look at her and see if I wanted her. Well. I got there, and the lady was nice, but I could tell she didn't know a thing about Huskies. Coco was running around, jumping on the lady, biting the lady and her hair. She was skinny and malnourished. The lady told me that she got up 5:30 AM and walked Coco, then put her in a kennel until 6 PM at night. Right then and there, I decided that she was not staying with that lady. So, I bought her and brought her home. Ever since, I've been training her, taking her for long walks with a long leash, and letting her stay out all day, but sleep in a kennel at night time. She still bites when she's playing, but not as often as when I first got her. She has gained weight, and she just seem happier now. I don't regret buying her at all. I don't know where she was born at or anything. She could be from a puppy mill for all I know, but as long as she is healthy and happy, I don't care. |

| Ugh, I can't believe all the typos, glad you could read everything. My computer is very wonky tonight, I love your update of "real name coming soon", lol.
I mentioned in a couple threads before, Miya came home at 5.5 weeks old, grrrr end rant, I raced to the humane societies thrift store to get extra puppy supplies, she was coming home way sooner than I had planned, I got her a little teddy bear for her, about the same size as her, so she had something to snuggle with, she dragged teddy around everywhere with here. Then at about 3 months she decided to beat teddy up, nothing major. at 4 months, i came home from work and teddy was just a pile of fluff, teddy was no more. To this day I can not say teddy with out Miya whimpering and walking around looking for him. she also goes out every morning to her kiddie pool and rescues all live bugs, scoops them up one by one, spits them out on the ground and goes back and repeats until all bugs saved, she leaves the dead ones in there, lol. |

I wish I could see that in person, too funny! Yeah, we can't wait to post our big announcement that princess puppy face is home with us (not her real name, heh heh heh!) Carrie |

Carrie, we have a neighbor boy named Teddy, and omg, first it's the derp face then the whining and looking, I so don't want to call him Theodore, lol. |

| My husky story is exxxxxxxxxxxtremely long, lol...I've grown up with nothing but Huskies (and one Malamute) and I really can't imagine myself with any other breed. Anyways, I'll keep this short. My current huskies, Kohdi and Mishka (1 1/2 years old and 6 months old respectively). Going to pick up Kohdi was extremely emotional for me, I had just lost my huskies the month before and the night before picking him up, I wasnt able to sleep and still had to put away all the toys and stuff before I left on my longgggg drive to get him. The breeder had sent me a video of Kohdi in the morning and I was sure I was getting a cutie, he was a talker!!! I finally arrived and the breeder had Kohdi on the tailgate of a truck and he was so beautiful. As the breeder was going over the paperwork with me, Kohdi started chewing on the rim of my hat, haha, my friend was with me and said when he saw that he knew evrything was going to be ok Not gonna lie though, as we got in the car, the emotions part of it came down on me full force...took awhile for the tears to stop. So since I just depressed everyone, here's a "funny" story...when I went to pick up Mishka, same thing, got in the car (she was in my lap) andddddddd....she peed on me. Andddddd, being in my lap, the pee was in the exact area on my pants where it looked like I peed myself. She's been trouble ever since, haha...but SO cute!!! |

| Okami is a breeder dog/ rescue.
She was bred by an experienced breeder. But the Dam she set up for the scheduled mating was a first time mom. So, for some reason she was eating the puppies. All of them but two were eaten. My Okami and her sister Sequoya. The breeder confided her friend which is a lab breeder, to hang on to the puppies to be sold through her so then they would be away from mom. So I found Okami through a lab breeder sort of... I got to meet the actual breeder, and the mom (all white like Okami) and dad (dad is a beast!!! he is a red and white husky ) I got a history of them and what not... but it was just a silly situation. She was so precious and playful- I fell in love with her the second I laid eyes on her. She was in the play pen and when she saw me she was just jumping up trying sooo hard to see me and I caught her in mid jump. I got millions of tiny kisses, scratches all over my arms from her wiggling, then all of a sudden she just calmed down and just laid there in my arms and eventually just fell asleep.
I always wanted a husky my whole life. I grew up with birds. Mostly parakeets, but there was just bird cages everywhere so there was no room for any type of dog when I was a kid.. but I always admired when I heard about sled dogs and then the movie Balto came out, and I think that is what did it honestly. Then I just became obsessed with huskies and malamutes and shibas and akitas etcetera northern breed dogs..... lol
When I first moved up to Michigan my dad wouldn't let me get a husky, but he let me get a German Shepard. His name was Scout. He was just a lovely dog. Perfect obedience, recall, you name it- this dog was the embodiment of man's best friend. I really miss him :'(
But I had a lot of knowledge from taking care of him, and I knew that German Shepards are similar in the duties to taking care of a husky (just magnify it a little haha) So I finally made the choice in my adult life to just get one. I have the means to and the time to. So Okami is a perfect fit into my little crazy family. |

| Hi Lucy, Wow, that is really an amazing story! Thank goodness Okami and her sister survived such a horrible situation. I am so happy you were able to rescue her. She is just beautiful! I love that you were able to transition from a wonderful GSD to a very special husky. Thanks so much for sharing! Carrie |

| Well, our first, Storm, came from the county shelter. It was about a year after our 13 year old GSD died. We had planned on another GSD, but came across Storm who had been picked up as a stray. We had to make the adoption happen as he was on their euthanasia list as a result of their finding him to be pet aggressive, which he isn't.
Nakita found us. I was on my way home from work and saw what I first thought was a coyote running down the middle of the road toward me. As I got closer, it became apparent the it was a husky. I stopped and she approached the truck and jumped into my lap as soon as I opened the door. Apparently she thought it was all settled. As it turned out, she was chipped and my wife tracked down her owner who was slightly less than enthusiastic about possibly getting her dog back and asked if we wanted to keep her.
Good luck with the new pup. I'm sure you'll both enjoy the experience very much. |

| Wow, Mat! Those are some serious stories! I am so glad you were able to save Storm from euthanasia. Huskies are so often misunderstood. Too funny about Nakita! Some things were just meant to be. Sad that her former owner didn't want her, but so great that you and your wife did. Thank you for sharing and the well-wishes! T-minus 9 days and counting! Carrie |

| I'm new to the forums but figured I would pop in and share my story. My husband and I just bought a house recently (yay!) and had joked around with the idea of getting a dog. My husband has always loved huskies, and I grew up with a Lab/Shepherd/Husky mix. After one of our friends got a dog, we started seriously considering the idea of getting a husky. Since we adopted our cats from Craigslist, we decided to start there. We did lots of research on huskies prior to looking, and balanced our budget again, and started looking. We found Gaia's picture and fell in love.
We texted back and forth with her owner, who was asking for a small rehoming fee to insure that she would go to a good home. It turns out that this person had two huskies, Elsa, and Anna. Anna had gotten attacked by the neighbor's dog and had to have surgery, and then Elsa was diagnosed with Coccidia. After her owner treated her for the Coccidia, she started to realize that if something worse than that were to happen to Elsa, she wouldn't be able to afford treatment for both dogs, and decided to find a new home for her.
We renamed her Gaia, and took her home on Sunday, and she is settling in. She seems fairly mellow all things considered, but loves her playtime, and is incredibly mischievous at times. We love her to pieces! She's shown remarkable progress in just a couple of days. |

| Hi Christina, It's great to hear your story! I'm really glad your adoption of Gaia has worked out so well. It must have been hard for her former owner to make the decision she did, but it sounds like she did what was best for both of her girls. Gaia is absolutely gorgeous and lucky to have you as her new family. I look forward to hearing more about her antics. Welcome to the board! Carrie

| I love all of your stories! Seriously! It's amazing how we all ended up with this awesome breed I grew up with german shepards, all my life...well and some mutts...lol. My parents have always had mutlitple dogs! When I moved out with my now hubby (at 24, i'm now 33) it was only days before I was freaking out because i had no dog. He always wanted a husky (though he knew NOTHING about them and had never had a dog either). We looked up husky puppies and ended up with a 5 week old Mya. Now, back then I knew NOTHING about puppies and them having to be with their mom until at least 8 weeks..if I did I would have never taken her. I also didn't know what a BYB was! I grew up with dogs as I mentioned, but they were my parents responsbility...i just loved them and slept with them...haha. Anyways, Mya came home and I was in love instantly. She definitely has all of the traits of being separated from her mommy and siblings too early, but we love her to pieces. When she turned 4 we got Kody. I wanted another so bad for about 2 years, but hubby wasn't agreeing. Finally he said yes and we brought home an adorable 12 week old boy! He immediately became Mya's b**ch! Thank goodness because she's anti dog...does not like any dog at all! Then 2 years ago Asia was at the shelter (at about 5 months) when a fellow husky owner and friend(Kristina) asked me to please pull her and that she had a foster home in place. A day here and it was a foster failure! Mya tolerated her and she and Kody became instant BFFs! So...yeah... i learned through experience, but I wouldn't have it any other way!! I love my babies, they're my life |

| Hi Melissa, Thank you for sharing your story! I'm beginning to think that huskies are like potato chips...apparently you can't stop at one! <seriously kidding with this comparison> LOL, but it seems like so many people end up wanting more. There must be something magical about this breed. In spite of all their naughtiness, they must be incredibly endearing. Tomorrow it will be 4 days until we find out for ourselves. We can't wait! |

| I got my first husky at 15, Tasha, from a byb. The breeder called her Liz (like Elizabeth Taylor), because of her striking blue eyes and dark black mask. The story starts with me as a kid with ADHD. I was very smart but would rush through things and make small mistakes. The best example was math problems, forgetting to move the decimal, or transposing 2 numbers. My dad found it so frustrating, and so he offered me a reward of 'whatever I wanted' if I could get a 4.0 for the first half of the school year. Well, I did, and I decided to use my reward to push for a husky. Like many people, I fell for them because of their beauty, and knew nothing, but Tasha got me well trained pretty quickly. anyway, dad and mom think it over and say okay, so we found an ad in our local paper for 12 week old husky puppies for $250. We went over and there were 4 puppies. A b&w male, 2 b&w females and my Tasha. They were out in the back yard in an enclosed dog run and when the breeder opened the gate, out they all raced! All but one ran up to us, kissing, playing, and being super lovable. The one that didn't come to us, did about 10 zoomie laps around the fence line of the yard, and I said, "I want that one." My parents looked scared, but said okay. The rest is history, Tasha got me through a lot, put me through a lot, and was an incredible friend. After her, I could never own another breed. She passed away at 16 years old. Once they talk, chew, run, and play themselves into your heart, it's very hard to love another breed as much. They are interesting and odd to say the least. They test you, push you, make you cry, make you laugh, and expose the most raw parts of your soul. They make you earn their bond, and just when it seems they could care less about you, they do something that shows how deeply they are bonded to you. So, yeah, they are special. |

| I grew up in a working class family in southern Louisiana and as an imaginative, cerebral kid I spent a lot of time fantasizing about things I didn't and couldn't have. These fantasies involved quite a lot of winter stuff: mountains, snow, ice, hockey, leather jackets, cute knit hats, rubber boots, and Siberia Huskies. I basically wanted to be Canadian.
I've always had a very natural affinity for dogs and knew that I would spend the better part of my adult life with a dog of my own, a Husky. I also knew that I had to wait for the time to be right financially, mentally, emotionally, and with timing.
In my 20th year of life I moved to Colorado and fulfilled my winter fantasies , minus the Husky . I didn't want to raise a Husky on my own while broke in university and playing hockey 4 nights a week.
Fast forward to Seattle in my 30th year of life and it was time to get my Husky, finally. I landed myself in a serious relationship with my current partner and very early on I flipped a major card for him : the next phase of my life will involve raising a Husky puppy and if you're not down for that this isn't gonna work. Thankfully, he too wanted to have a dog in his life and he told me that he has always wanted one of two breeds, a German Shepherd or a Siberian Husky. Keeper. Check.
My favorite video game of all time is the Legend of Zelda and I have had Link, my dog's name, picked out since I was 12. We decided together to begin searching for our Husky. I did a lot of research on breeders in the region and had a very definitive set of criteria for a breeder and the dog we would get. Once all that panned out we eventually found our puppy in Oregon and we took Link home in February, one week after our anniversary of being together.
Getting this Husky named Link and my relationship with him in particular is overwhelmingly the most romantic thing I have ever done. Our trio is the healthiest thing I have ever been a part of.
That's my Husky story. |
