Got him yesterday, almost 2 months old, funny thing, he was born the same day (not month) of my birthday, next week.
Its the first Husky i have.
Questions,
this day he has been very sleepy and in the night he was crying a lot... i guess this is normal because the separation from his pack? also, i put newspaper where he pees/poo and it seems is working a little bit, he kinda goes for that spot, but also he is trying to eat the newspaper (or almost anything he finds in the floor) . Im going to buy a pooty patch, but for the moment, do you have any suggestion instead of newspaper or to avoid him eating it?
Thanks |

| Hello Kaiser and .... well, we don't know who Kaiser owns - maybe we can talk them into filling out their profile a bit more to help us along.
As a 2 month old puppy, you can expect him to sleep - a lot! And when he's not sleeping he's going to be going as fast and furious as he can, there's a whole new world out there and he's got to explore every last little bit of it!!
Crying can be normal after separation from his pack. But you're his new pack and you can make the difference. Where'd he sleep last night, in a kennel (crate) or on the floor or on the bad with you? If you haven't figured it out yey, Husky's make great snuggle companions.
House training the little one, so a search on here, there are a few threads dedicated to how to house train a puppy and newspapers, etc aren't the way. If you want him to go outside to do his "duty", then start now to teach him that outside is the place to do it. Take him out about every time you turn around, 'cause that's about how often he's going to need to go for a while.
Welcome to the forum and feel free to ask away, someone will have some answers for you .... _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| If you kennel your new guy get something like an old t-shirt that smells like you to snuggle up with. Miya had "Teddy" until at about 4 months old she completely destroyed "Teddy", a stuffed teddy bear, I still to this day can not say teddy because she goes looking for him, lol. Until Kaiser is acclimated with you, I would take him out after every nap, after eating/drinking, after playing. Typically is one hour for every month old, so at 2 months every 2 hours, but read what I just said. I don't recommend newspaper or pads, because then he will never get used to going out, and you'll have bigger messes as he ages. Look for signs beyond what I said as in, sniffing around (means I have to go), circling (means I have to go), played for 15 minutes (means I have to go), I had a great nap, you get the point.
Welcome to the forum, please ask away, great and informative people here. BTW Kaiser has some handsome markings, congrats! |

| Thanks for your replies.
This first days have been kinda messy and busy (took me 1hr to write this line, i was busy with Kaiser stuff)
I took him to sleep with me so he has been quiet in the nights, but i wake up when i listen to him, 2-3 times per night and take him to the backyard.
I bought him treats, a spray attractant, some toys, and the potty patch is going to be delivered next week, so far it looks that he is learning to go outside but he isn't warning, the signs are confusing to me, for example, i still don't know if he is sniffing looking for food or because he wants to go outside, i take him outside, stay there for 15+ minutes, he does nothing, i take him in and he pees/poo .
Problem with taking him out or leaving him in the backyard is that he is more entertained by crickets, roaches or trying to eat small stones, so i can't leave him without supervision obviously, and it becomes a thing of taking him in/out couple of times in very small amout of time, and im miss the signs when is inside the house.
Another issue, is that i have an old shetland sheepdog, like 11-12 years maybe, he was used to live with dogs, his couple sheepdog, and an australian cattle dog, saddly both died, and he was alone for some months maybe a year, until a yorkshire terrier arrived to my home (he had about 6 years), they used to live ok together, but at random times they fought, specially at food time, and the fights where caused by the small terrier. The terrier is not in my house now, and Kasier REALLY wants to play with the shetland, but everytime he is close to him, the shetland starts to growl, even when im patting both or just the shetland, trying to keep him calm, other times he just runs away kinda afraid of Kaiser .... any suggestion about this?
Again thanks.

| Your Shetland is old, not as nimble, and your Kaiser is young, rambunctious, unpredictable, etc..., its possible that the Shetland is just warning Kaiser not to get too close bcause he's afraid of getting hurt...sounds kind of ridiculous that a puppy is going to hurt a big adult dog, but its no different than a kid playing with an elderly person, if the elderly person falls or something, that person can get seriously hurt. So its possible the Shetland is just *protecting* himself and not sure that will ever change in the Shetlands time left. I doubt the Shetland will hurt Kaiser, he's just giving Kaiser a warning...and as they live together, the Shetland will become somewhat more comfortable with Kaiser, but the growls will probably still be heard from time to time. This is just my theory though, someone else here may have better advice for you. |

your theory actually makes perfect sense, because the terrier hurt the shetland, he tore a nail of him, thats when i gave away the terrier to a close friend. |

| I agree with Jimmy, dogs have a way of communicating with each other, eventually the old guy will grumble and Kaiser will just leave the old man alone. Just watch on them both and remove which ever is easier, at the moment Kaiser. They'll eventually find a way to get along. Miya is almost 2 and I have a 3 pound 14.5 year old Siamese, and they cohabitate pretty well.
With your potty issue, most dogs, puppies and dogs, need a little playtime outside to get things going, Miya needs to walk around for a few minutes and just as I start to give up, she goes. Now I do say go potty, always have and always will, so as you take him out get excited....Go out and potty Kaiser, take him out play a little, once he is doing the deed good boy go potty, and after the deed good boy go potty, give a little pat or neck rub. It's the combination of the playtime, excitement, and the praise along with the repetition that will make the light bulb go on , and he will master go potty outside. You have to be watchful, if he goes to his food area, then he's probably hungry, if he's sniffing pretty much anywhere else it's potty time. If you catch him in the act of going inside, immediately pick him up take him out and use the whole potty ritual. Never scold for the inside, and always praise, even if he did mostly in the house. The positive praise outside, will translate to wanting to go outside. Eventually he will give you signs that he has to go out to potty, like standing at the door. I hope that helps. |
