| Hehe I've had this idea for awhile now, so I decided to make a thread for it. For those of you who aren't aware, Mt. Washington is the largest mountain in New England, and in some regard is even bigger than many mountains out west despite being lower in elevation (this is due to the base of Mt. Washington being a lot closer to sea level than the bases of other mountains). Since I got Yukon almost a year ago I kind of wanted to hike him up to the summit, but where the fun in that without any husky brethren to hike with us? So that's why I've made this thread, in case anyone is interesting in scaling this mountain with us. To be clear though I made this thread way too long in advance, as I don't plan on going until the Spring/Summer of 2015 after I've graduated from High School and have my driver's license. Until then everything is just in planing mode. So if you want to make a day trip or want to come from another part of the country for a weekend type thing, but were afraid that it would be on too short of a notice you can fear not! Anyways if you're interested at all please don't hesitate to post! I'm aware that this thread (being made 6-9 months prior to the actual event) will probably die quite a few times. But regardless I'll try to update it periodically and just kind of go with the flow. So what do you say, wanna devastatingly conquest Mt. Washington with us? |

| We've been to the top of Mt. Washington several times. The winds at the top can be so severe, you cannot walk into them. The view is phenomenal! It is well worth the trip.
As for hiking it - if you are not an experienced hiker, please do your research. People die hiking this mountain - the weather is imperfectly forecast here and freak, severe storms are well-known. You need to be prepared for hypothermia among other things - even in summer.
A great post-graduation experience! |

A great post-graduation experience! Heh, creepy and probably haunted old mountain death trap named after some dead president? Sounds like a perfect trip for immortal teens! But seriously, that's another one of the reason why I'm not going for awhile. Like you said it can be dangerous and I am still a novice when it comes to mountain climbing, so I want to do it right. |

| Sounds incredibly exciting! I'm pretty novice at hiking as well, but I do love it! If I lived closer I would love to join you, but unfortunately I don't lol.

| I climbed it when I was about your age, actually. It was my first summit, but I went with some pretty experienced folks. Depending on when you do it and what's going on with our move out west, we'd definitely be up for it. It's actually something that Aaron and I have talked about doing before we leave the east coast _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. Yeah that kind of stinks, so many people live so far away. :c - blueeyedghost wrote:

Awesome! Like I said it would probably be after I graduate from High School, but before my Freshman year of college starts. So maybe in June/July? It's going to be hard to predict an exact date though since it would probably be a bad idea to go in the middle of a storm or something... :s |

| I'm at least still going to be in Maryland in the early part of the summer, Aaron though is going to be moving out west as soon as he has a good job. You do have to be careful that time of year because storms tend to come with less notice as opposed to like the fall. I did SERE (survival training) in Maine in early June one year and we had a couple of really nasty storms blow up on us. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Ugh yeah, storms can pop out of nowhere sometimes in the summer... I'll be tracking the weather around the East Coast (with an emphasis on NH) in the weeks leading up to the actual trip, and I'll try to pick a day when there isn't anything on the radar. :o |

| Unfortunately it's not going to be that easy. You basically have to pick like a weekend or something and hope the weather is conducive. It's best to start really early too, most storms pop up in the afternoon. You'll have an idea about general weather forecasts, but looking at radar several days out isn't going to help.
Also, from where you live you're going to want to drive up the night before, because if you try to leave your house that morning you're going to be starting too late in the day up the mountain. My advice would be to camp out near the trailhead and then start a little before dawn. That's what Aaron and I did with Jenn and Dietra when we did Elbert last year. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Hmm, camping the night before might be a good idea. I had just planned to drive up early in the morning and get there at around 6-7am since it's only a few hours away. But Camping would allow me to get more sleep... xD |

| I think that's the smarter choice, and it allows you to get on the trail earlier. And as you said, with more sleep. Having fallen asleep at the wheel once and almost killed myself, I'm all about not driving fatigued I chatted with Aaron, and if we can manage with the upcoming move and job changes, I think we'd be game. I'll probably shout at my friend who I climbed with in 1999 too, she lives up in Maine now. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Hehe, awesome! My older sister might tag along as well, so that would be roughly 4-5 people so far (assuming everything works out of course). |

| That would be so fun, but alas I'm in Colorado too. My mom grew up not too far from Mt. Washington...he summertime fun was to sit at the base of the mountain and watch the tourists go up the mountain in shorts & tshirts and come back down in sweatpants and sweatshirts (that they bought at the summit). Be prepared even with good weather at sea level, take warm clothes. You'll be glad you did. |

Be prepared even with good weather at sea level, take warm clothes. You'll be glad you did. That does sound like fun! Although it's a shame you guys can't go. :c I'm probably going to pack a bunch of Under Armour and some jackets/sweaters, then put them on or take them off as needed when on the trail. That way I wont ever be too hot or cold when walking. :o |
