PostSubject: Off leash control Returning.    Off leash control Returning. EmptySun Oct 12, 2014 1:48 am

For a second time shadow has gotten free of leash control, first time my fault he goes after something and comes back after 5-10 mins. This time (at night) he hears/sees something in the dark I let him go a few feet run face first into a full spider web back step let go of the leash and fall on my butt. So im going around for a few minutes calling him/ whistling and after (presumably) checking the area around my neighbors house he comes out on the other side back to me when I call him.

Granted there are wooded lots surrounding our houses so there is only one way out without going through the woods, this is the second time he's just come back to me. I can assume I cannot count on this to happen all the time but how many of you have had your husky get off leash and come back to you without issue when called?

Huskies are notorious for selective recall. You got lucky twice. Perhaps looking into a harness or a belt leash would be a better solution for you, you'll have more control over him.

Both times was more of operator error really. He's good on the leash almost always. This time I dropped him the other I let him off. Completely my fault, he came back looking at me as to say "why didn't you come with?"

I know that many have a strong bond, Miya looks to me all the time, having the belt leash may be a good option, it's hands free so no operator error. Too many huskies get lost because of this, or God forbid he catches something in the wind and he's gone, or better yet he gets tangled up with a raccoon or skunk, yay for skunks, like Miya did last night. Not a pleasant experience for any of us, especially since we had bad storms and had no power while trying to clean her up. Look into the belt harness, they're very cool, and have several different uses for different occasions.

I might do that, I know he can't go far since he has an issue with his rear legs still but it seems to be getting better over time and if he gets 100% I can go for miles husky it might be a while before he makes his way home one way or another.

I wondered how he was doing? He is such a handsome boy, and indeed there are dangers out there, regardless of his legs. There's a thread here called hands free belt recommendations, it may help you. Take care of that sweet boy.

Yeah, I agree. You got lucky. You can rely on a husky to come back every time until they don't. Know what I mean? They tend to listen when they feel like it, or there is nothing more interesting around. Or even sometimes just because, but unless you have done seriously extensive and exhaustive training and proofing you can't trust them. Even if you have done that type of training you can't ever trust them 100%.

Nordkyn outfitters has a couple of good quality hiking belts that aren't super expensive and I love mine. I also have a leash from climbk9.com that is essentially a cross body leash, similar to a messanger bag, make from recycled climbing rope. It's my main leash that I use for everything and I love it. The guy that makes them is awesome, and if you don't like the colors he has available just use the contact area on the website and ask him if he has or can get a color you like better. I got one in teal to match everything else Diz has. I'd say the cross body leash is a better option than the belt, only because there is less time to get the cross body leash on and ready to go, vs. an extra step of the belt. I only use my belt for running or hiking if I want Diz to pull.
