I currently have my Zena on a 25 foot chain in the back yard. I. have head her about 1week. I did not know anything about a Husky I just thought she was a regular type dog. Now I have been reading about Huskys I have that not to be true. But we love her and we are keeping her. The question is I. have a large fenced with a 6foot privacy fence. But everything that I have read tells me how of a Houdini Huskys are I am scared to let her free it the yard. Can someone tell me a good way to protect the fence so she can't get out if that's possible?

Also - some more mellow huskies may need less stringent boundaries. We adopted Ami from a shelter almost a year ago. Initially, he was totally contained on a 100 ft overhead dog trolley from about 7AM until midnight (except for walks, twice daily 3+ and 2+ miles each. Also, he was played with - ball, tuggy toy etc a couple of times a day to break his monotony. Then at bedtime he was crated in an outbuilding - again with playtime, off leash chasing toys, me, sniffing around etc. ) With experience, we now let him roam in the backyard. It has a 4 ft chainlink - he could easily get out, if he wanted either digging under or climbing over. He could even jump it in places but he does not know that Yet. So, he is only loose in the backyard when I can watch him - we are retired so home a lot. I have large kitchen window that I can see almost the whole back yard. If we leave the property, he either goes with us or is tethered on his trolley.

Most siberian rescues specify a 6 ft fence - so if you have a 6 ft privacy fence you should be alright unless yours is truly a Houdini. Not all are. If she is, then the coyote fence described by Michael along with chicken wire, concrete or hardware cloth along the bottom (if you have a digger) should be adequate. Unless she eats through the fence

I should also mention - early on when we first got him, coming home from a walk, he was eager to get in the backyard for dinner - too eager to wait for me to open the gate so he tried going under, caught his prong collar on the chain link, squeeled like a pig (as did I ). He has never since then made any attempt to go under any part (or over) - even when there was a baby deer butting its head against the fence.

We buried chicken wire under our fence as a precaution but have never had an issue. If you are keeping up with exercise she may never care to escape even if she is capable. Just don't leave her in the yard unattended and you should be fine.

Another consideration - About 2 months or so after we got Ami, he got loose. At first I thought I must not have put his shackle on securely. Nope - the furry beast has learned how to undo the snap shackles. I have since solved that by using 2 snap shackles - once he undo's one of them and he's not loose, he doesn't mess with the second. Just be careful that the other end has a swivel - else he can twist up his collar and choke himself.

Ami did come back on his own (much to my surprise and gratitude) - with a stomach chock full of hunters' discarded deer remains - which he proceeded to disgorge and bury for future delectables

Now that he has plenty of "house time," he really does not seem prone to wander or try to get loose, he's just happy poking into the corner's of the backyard.

Thanks for all the great help. I am going around my fence and looking at all the ways she could get out and filling them with big rocks. I live in a subdivision and I am going to get a name tag and I will pray she can't get out. If she does i someone will return turn her. Thanks again for all the help. David

Honestly each dog is a little different also. Most huskies are probably escape artists. But koda who is almost 2, i take to a baseball field all most every day with a 3 foot fence and he never even tried. Also when he is in my room i have a baby gate that isnt even attached to the wall. It just leans against the wall. And he wont even touch it.

I have 6 foot privacy fence on 2 sides of my back yard and just a 4 foot chain link fence on the third side. So far, I have been fine with it. Loki has tried to dig under on one side, but there is cement under the fence. But then again, he is only 6 months old.

As previously posted, every dog is different. We have a back yard that is about 3/4 of an acre, with only a 4 foot wire fence and Kesler has never gotten out. But he is not left outside with no supervision for more than an hour or two. I am way too paranoid.

Seems like you have a good solid fence, and have a good start on checking for possible escape routes. Maybe try only a couple hours at a time and work your way up to see how long you can trust her out there alone ?
