considering doing a dog walking/mushing service Empty
PostSubject: considering doing a dog walking/mushing service   considering doing a dog walking/mushing service EmptySat Sep 06, 2014 3:49 pm

I was contemplating providing a service of walking dogs.
I actually never walk mine we only go mushing on blades.

still going out 4 times a week travelling 4 kilometers a session.

would people be interested in this service?
I don't know if other breeds will want to run.

It will obviously be with my dog there so won't be much strain on the other dog.

thoughts?

it will probably be more excercise than the other dog has ever done in its life.
actually tiring them out. and differing breeds.

I don't know if the general public will want this.
any thoughts welcome.

A dog walking service isn't a bad idea, although I don't think it's quite that simple either. After all you said yourself that different breeds have different exercising needs; plus most dogs weren't bred to run and pull for hours like huskies are. Smaller breeds in particular would suffer from not being able to pull a sled (Beagles, Shiba Inus, and Terriers all come to mind). I would also be slightly cautious when pairing new dogs with unknown personalities around your dog, what if the client's dog is aggressive around other dogs? Also don't dogs have to train for sledding as well? If you just put a dog in the harness and let them run without teaching them the proper commands first it could end badly...

Now if you were to offer walking, jogging, bikejoring, and mushing/dogsled training services I think the general public would be much more open to it. That way you could offer your services to all types of dog owners instead of just ones with larger, more energetic breeds. People are surprisingly lazy and would most likely be willing to pay someone to exercise their dogs for them. Razz

The liability alone would keep me away from inviting stranger dogs of unknown health and structural soundness from joining my team on a run. Its a novel idea, don't get me wrong...but you would have to have a very solid understanding of functional structure to identify client dog faults and keep them within healthy limitations, or at the minimum be able to explain such limitations to the owner of the dog on why you could not safely take a select dog on as a client. The last thing you would want is for an injury to occur while in your direct care/observation.

HuskyMom - that's an excellent observation; all too true with our suit happy country it'd be too easy for someone to sue over something simple and there went the business.

identify client dog faults, what exactly should I be avoiding.
I decided to make and advertisement, addressing needs of the the dog pairing.

Furai is easily managable. I asssume the other dog would follow his lead.

my only issue has been he sometimes doesn't give any notice when stopping.
I tried to implement a bark command but that's still in the works.

And he once ran into a fence at full speed. he was looking at me and not paying attention to where he was going.

once in a while he tries to go a way I don't intend too but nothing bad has happened.
I'm about 80 kilos can easily stop in time and bring him to a halt, he's cautious of cars.

I'd obviously be paying very close attention to the other dog.
It's a little long winded

Since you don't have a name, I can't really address you ...

If you're seriously thinking of doing this as a business,

  • If you're a minor, make sure that your parents insurance will cover liability. Nothing like coming home and having to tell dad that he's about to get sued!
  • Check into the local laws and see what you need to do to make sure you cannot be sued if anything, gods forbid, should occur. Signed waiver of liability comes to mind - however you might want to note that if you're asking someone to waive liability they'll probably think twice.
  • get yourself a host and put up your own web site.  Web hosting is available almost anywhere for literally a couple of dollars a month.  You also don't have competitors advertising on you nickle.
  • While GumTree gives your location, it might be beneficial to give, at least, a location in your text
  • Pet peeve, correct your English and spelling.  You may be offering a service, but it still helps if you appear at least semi-literate.

I"m only doing this to have a destination on walks, I highly doubt I'll get enough clientele to warrant it as a full time job.
every street in my town I'v traveled down.
it's a lot of fun going out and people are more prone to start conversation when I have a Furai with me.
liability wise I'm only going to state I'm not going to be held liable verbally. If anything s to happen it's most likely to be their dogs fault.
worst I see happening is a dog that either chases cars or bites somebody.
As for the text I think it's understandable. perhaps blocked badly. not trying to be persuiasive.
that's what happens when writing in wordpad and trying to be as concise as possible.
I do believe it should be a lot shorter, but all relevant info is stated.
if I get no leads within a month I will pull the advert down.
I live in a town of 15,000. surrounding towns aren't much bigger and take a minimum of 10 minutes travel on the highway.
my dogs to big to travel on the trains.

My husband is a full time walker and sitter. You need more than liability waivers. You need separate insurance and have to be bonded. That's in case you get bit, someone else gets bit, or the dog is hurt.

Without it, you are looking at a nightmare of vet and hospital bills.

Also, I nightly recommend you don't walk/mush with your dog. People don't want their dogs around strange dogs without temperament tests and qualified professionals, then theres the issue of vaccinations.

I would do a lot of research before you proceed. Dog walking sounds like an easy start-up, but it requires a lot to be at all successful.
