Just a question, how prone is this breed to protate issues or prostate cancer?  My Buddy (9yr.) is having some problems with his prostate.  He was neutered and still its swollen.  Any ideas? Any advice?  He is in pain when trying to poop.   Crying or Very sad Sad

I would take him to your vet since he's swollen and difficult time pooping. How long ago did you have him neutered? I'm not sure, but I don't think prostate problems with huskies is common.

PROSTATE CANCER IN HUSKYS Empty
PostSubject: Re: PROSTATE CANCER IN HUSKYS   PROSTATE CANCER IN HUSKYS EmptyTue Sep 02, 2014 1:45 pm

We have been visiting our vet like every 3 weeks regarding this issue. He was healthy, blood work clean. He was neutered because his prostate was swollen and that is why he was crying out when pooping. that was back July 29, 2014. It has been a month of his operation. For the next 3 weeks after his operation, he was find, finished his meds and eating only boiled chicken breast. Then I started mixing chicken breast with his food, he was eating Blue for Rocky Mountain Recipe. So he starting crying out while pooping again. I changed the food back to boiled chicken breast and then he started to have diaherrea, no blood in the area nor in his discharges. Thank God. So, took him back because he wanted to poop and then it was just a bit of discharge and finished with diaherrea, so he was treated for colitis. That was on August 27. So on Sunday evening and Monday morning he started to cry while pooping. That is when I decided to take him back to the vet. Prostate is still swollen and he told me that the possibility of him having prostate cancer, but needs to have a sonogram to see and then a biopsy if the sonogram catches something. But the thing is, he was soo nervous while we were waiting for the vet, that he wanted to poop, he did without crying out. Funny right, and the dr. told me that he still has his prostate swollen. So, I am worried sick. About what may come for my dear furson!!! He was given a strong medication (antibiotic) and we have to return next week.

Any advice.

PROSTATE CANCER IN HUSKYS Empty
PostSubject: Re: PROSTATE CANCER IN HUSKYS   PROSTATE CANCER IN HUSKYS EmptyTue Sep 02, 2014 2:13 pm

After a quick look around the web, prostate problems do not seem to be a major problem with Husky's, a few other breeds but nowhere did I find Husky's on the list.

I'm more than a bit concerned that since he was neutered because of a swollen prostate that the vet didn't examine it while he was in there.  A snip for a biopsy would have provided a lot of answers to the questions you're raising now.  I don't know your relationship with this vet but when one suggests that there is a "possibility of him having prostate cancer" I'd be looking for at least a second opinion. Simply, from what you've said, I see a few red flags about this vet that I'd like to have clarified by another vet.

My standard recommendation is to take a look at the schools in your area that have veterinary programs and the University of Puerto Rico has two, one in San Juan and one in Arecibo.

My logic for looking at vet schools is that they tend to have good current equipment; a faculty who, in general, are seriously dedicated to our animals care; they often are looking for dogs that under a doctors supervision can be examined by their students; and finally they often cost significantly less than a working doctor since many of the expenses are picked up as a part of veterinary education.  (( if that doesn't scare you away, they really are a good place to look. ))

Thank you Al, I never thought of looking into the vets program here in the Island. I thought we didn't have such programs within our University of Puerto Rico.

This last visit was another vet. This is the second opinion. His regular vet was the one treating him for colitis and the swollen prostate.

So, please keep my Buddy in your prayers and ask for wonderful news and outcome.

This example is a reason I really do like it when people post their locations. Had I not been able to see that Marie was in San Juan, I would have had no idea where to look.
... and of course we're going to expect follow-ups
