| I am considering adopting a older husky. The rescues in my area, however, require a at home visit. I am kind of hesitating on this part. I know I have a house and a fenced in yard. I have a place to put a new crate and ways to keep the dog leashed all the time. Has anyone had a at home visit and can you let me know how they normally go? Maybe I'll feel better if I hear from others. |

| i have done home visits We just want a little glimpse into your home life and as a person. the people i talked to were dog-less at the time, but still had photos of there past pups in the home, it was sweet. i checked the yard, pointed out spaces to maybe fix, just cause there other dogs did not jump did not mean these new girls will not. their downstairs (his office area) had a lot of paper work on the floor with books and random things i suggested he pick up or gate off the area, again just cause the others did not bother it does not mean these girls will also leave it alone. we also talked about food, vets and activities with them. nothing to be worried about since you are well prepared for the new one good luck! _________________ |

| So I actually do home visits for a couple of different rescues. Mostly we are looking to see that our dogs are being placed in a safe environment. Each rescue is different, but for things like the fence, if it's not a 5-6' fence then have a solution ready if they ask. Also be prepared for certain dogs to need higher fences. Make sure that your yard is picked up and there isn't anything that the dog could get hurt on. We have a pool, so when we adopted Shadow we had to show them that we weren't leaving chemicals in the open and we also had to discuss what we would do to keep dogs from falling in. Our dogs don't go out unattended, so that was a non issue. For the house, make sure it's neat and again, that you aren't leaving harmful things where a dog could get them. That's really the big thing. We don't care if you have a mansion that's kept immaculate 24/7, we just want to make sure our dogs are going to safe houses. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. And yet, you never lose sight of how absolutely extraordinary that very ordinariness is, how difficult, remarkable and rewarding that fight to be 'just like everybody else' has been." -Gwen Cooper, "Homer's Odyssey" Shadow - 03/01/2013 - 10/02/2014 |

| This makes me feel better. If it is just simple checks that is fine.
Yeah, my house isn't great, but everything is picked up as I have 2 dogs and 2 cats already. The guy I found is big and that is the one warning that he needs a 5' fence and someone strong to walk him. He is 66lbs and my current dog is about 70lbs, so we are use to managing that part. My fence is also straight to the ground and the lowest point is 5' going to 6'. We only have wood going in 18" deep in half the fence, but I know what to do if he is a digger and keep a eye on him while he is out in yard. The one I liked is listed as cat friendly, but we already have cat trees, gates, and cat only areas for my cats as well. In addition, I wouldn't leave him unattended just like I don't leave Loki unattended with the cats as a precaution. My dogs get a mix of FreshSelect wet food and TOTW dry food. I think that is decent food. If I mention I may want to switch to raw food at some point is that acceptable? |

| I recently had the SPCA come for Meg before I could fully adopt her. Ladies were very nice.. It's really just for simple checks. You shouldn't have a problem as long as you don't have bear traps laying around. |
