Hi everyone,
So Casper has this strange habit of going straight to the dirt and eating it whenever hes done using the bathroom outside. Its pretty much like a routine for him at this point and I wanted to know if there was any way I'd be able to ever get him to relax outside and sunbathe or something like most dogs do.

Seriously though a couple things you can do, if you are not doing this then it's a good time to start, teach "drop it" and "leave it". Also use redirection, take his mind off of dirt and to something better, tug toy, ball, something he likes and start playing. Eventually the newness will wear off and he won't be so stuck on just one thing, although they do love dirt. Miya, every morning will go out and sniff everything if there's something I don't want her into I tell her leave it, and off she goes to something else. Hope I helped.

I looked this up before because my dogs were eating dirt at times. Many times dogs will eat dirt because they may have a vitamin/mineral deficiency in their diet and are trying to make up that deficiency by getting it from the dirt (instinctual). If its a regular habit, it may be the cause.

Good advice Jimmy. Indeed I've read that somewhere as well. Miya never eats dirt, she's a digger, roller and nose pusher, her nick name is Miya Mud Paw for a reason, lol.

I just realized how young he is...could just be a puppy thing. My Mishka doesnt eat dirt but I swear she thinks she was put on earth to be a vacuum cleaner because she pics up anything and everything and puts it in her mouth. With Casper being so young, I dont think you would have to worry about it being a vitamin/mineral deficiency, I believe it takes like 6 months to get all that digestion stuff settled.

@ Renee, Miya would get along great with Kohdi, LOL...I want to hire Kohdi out to swimming pool contractors to dig the pools for them, haha, he'd make a fortune and it would keep him busy enough that he might forget about turning my lawn next to my swimming pool into a mini me swimming pool

Now that's a great suggestion for Casper, find something for him to dig, it's still redirecting him and he still get's to dig. Win/win. lol Miya is almost 2 and laying in the grass and sun is a rare occurrence, even in this Texas heat. If she does lay down for a minute or two(I'm not exaggerating) then there's a bone or tree limb in her mouth. I know he's little, try walking him around your property, or play chase with him, it's all about redirection. Hope it helps and good luck.

The thing is he doesn't dig it at all lol. He just kinda sticks his face into the dirt and takes little bites, I think he tries to get ants and stuff out of it. Also I don't think its a vitamin thing he eats TOTW 3 times a day along with puppy treats and stuff like that that have puppy vitamins in them. Ill try the redirection stuff along with the leave it command.

I think your feeding good stuff, my girl is on TOTW also, now she is a billy goat at times and yanks clumps of dirt and grass, don't know why, usually she gets the zoomies after she does that, probably because she knows I'm mad at her for pulling clods of grass up. lol. Also nice to see you and Jimmy are nearby with pups about same age. Have fun y'all!!

Its not a vitamin thing...I hadnt realized Casper was only a puppy...but good info for people w/dogs that are grown and eating dirt!!!, haha. My last 2 Huskies had a habit of going outside and licking the dirt, so I looked it up and found out that they may have a vitamin/mineral deficiency according to the "symptoms" (there are various reasons for dogs eating dirt and depending on different things, you can kinda judge the reason for it) which I didnt understand because they were eating what most woul consider, a quality food.

And yeah, a playdate would be cool!!! and not to worry, both of mine are super sweet with awesome personalities. Casper will love them!!! Kohdi will even show him the hole to China (or Siberia, he hasnt really confided in me his ultimate escape destination yet )

Woot Jimmy almost spit out my water from laughing. Maybe it's a husky conspiracy, "The Meet Up Is In Siberia, Woof"

He hasn't met many huskies up here in LA so I'd love to see how he reacts to his own kind
