Hey guys I had a question my husband and I just lost our husky girl Stella Marie almost 2 weeks ago at 2.5 yo, her partner in crime our 1.5 yo male husky Apollo seems to be having a hard time with it. We have already gone through the not wanting to eat and constantly looking for her, but the one thing we are having a hard time with is crating him. They were both crate trained since the day they came home but now anytime we put him in the crate especially at bedtime he freaks out! Mind you this is after we take him for a 45 min. walk because we figured it would help to relieve some energy before bed. Also because he has been freaking out we have been letting him out of the kennel. So I guess my question is is he grieving or now because we have been letting him out when he freaks out that he just knows we will let him out? Any answers will be a big help!

A 45 minute walk is not nearly long enough walk to tire out a husky. Have you ever tried any type of running with him? Biking, Jogging, Rollerblading, Scootering, Sledding/skiing/snowboarding (I know it is summer but it is a great fun in the winter!), Hiking in inclined areas, and if walking at least a build up to a couple hours of walking twice daily. Huskies are bred to work and be athletic. They will be bored, whiney, destructive, etcetera, without proper levels of tiredness. Yes it is also very possible that your Apollo may be depressed at the loss of your other pup (so sorry by the way ) so actions you can take to help him out would be to go to dog parks and socialize him, maybe he needs some company? You can take him to the vet to see if they suggest any sort of anti depressant. But I strongly suggest that more than a 45 minute walk before bed will help take Apollo's mind off of things and make him tired and happy. Good luck Stephanie!

Also letting him out of the crate when he is whining tells him that if he whines he doesn't have to be in there. Only let him out when he calms down. Sometimes it can be unbearable and can last for a few hours. So stay strong and don't give in. You only turn him to a spoiled "I get my way when I cry" temper tantrum doggie.

I totally agree that 45 min is no where near enough time to tire him out, he is your typical husky, sorry I didn't specify but he gets walk at least twice a day if not more for at least 45 min. and I have just started running with him to see if it will help, we go hiking and to the lake as well. I work at a vets office and they said that he needs at least a month to grieve because the 2 were very close. And as for his temper tantrums that is what I figured they were that I had given in the first time because I felt sorry for him and now he is just doing it because I have been letting him out. Thank you!
