Mishka, Skye,

When we decide to get a second dog, we have decided it will be another husky, since plays the best with husky's, or german shepherd, because of related size and my personal preference. I have always had one or the other or a mix of the two all my life. When my husband and I got together he always wanted a black lab, and I was determined to convince him husky or gsd. I won, haha.

I may be wrong on this, but Alaskan husky is a subclass of husky, husky crossed with mal or gsd(typically), akc does not recognized Alaskan as a separate breed.

I am not familiar with your area, but I do applaud you for wanting a rescue. Sad fact right now is that there are horrible people out there looking for mainly huskies, and wolf dogs for the sole purpose of using as bait for dog fighting. It is a gross practice, the more huskies going to good homes, the less will be available to these monsters.

Only you can decide on what you are looking for, but I really feel husky/husky companions work nicely because of the rough play they do. The only dog that plays well with my girl, is another husky. Every body else thinks she is a bully, because she talks and jumps and chases.
Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide.

Thanks Renee
In my area (very small town) some people have claimed mishka as their dog and it terrifies me that someone will snatch her up if she gets loose that's another reason I want a buddy for her because I've read that they do bettter in pairs and I really am looking for one that is a year or younger and I'm utmost considering another husky just because they are so loveable thanks again but I do admire GSDs

I have heard that boxers make good buddies as well, as they have a rough play style also. As far as a buddy keeping someone from snatching her, getting another will more likely just end up with some evil person gaining two nice dogs with one snatch if it's going to happen. Keeping up with tags and microchips is a must. My local animal control also has pictures and info on all my dogs so if they spot them before I even know they are gone, they can retrieve them. It's been my experience that two loose dogs are way harder to catch, especially two loose huskies. That being said, it has been nice having our second dog (gsd mix) to keep her from being bored when I'm busy.

Jenn,
I have followed your Keno posts, the very first dog I grew up with was a husky/gsd, such a great dog. Keno reminds me of her. Miya has played with a boxer and he was afraid of her, a moth apart in age but she is twice his size. She has also played with a pitt and he was smaller and not fond of her play style, I think it's because she talks alot. Her boyfriend, a husky, is the only one that understands her play, she's also slightly bigger than he is, but they do fine, he's a year older and she tires him out, while she still wants to play. What works the best is to walk her, play with him, then walk her some more, then finally she's tired.

Jenn, my dad said the same thing about getting a second, after Miya was attacked my husband wanted a second, figuring 2 on 1 was better, just in case. My dad said that sometimes it poses more problems having two, they can be a stubborn breed. Although they are pack animals, they are more appealing to the evil doers of the world.

Skye, I live in a huge county in Texas with a total population of 9,000. 5,500 in the town seat, the rest of us scattered in little towns of about 30-50 people. It's country out here too. I know of a person who had a husky mix on the outskirts of town, some idiot saw her dog thought it was a wolf/coyote and shot her in the face, pup was 6 months old, and tied out on a 10 foot chain, pup survived, a month later the evil person came back and finished the job. If there was 2 they both would have been shot, I'm sure. Jenn, has it right on protecting her dogs. Good advice Jenn.

Skye, I also don't think it would be too hard to find a husky/gsd mix, as long as you don't want a pure, I think that is a wonderful choice, and a good companion breed to your husky. Take a look at Jenn's nice looking dogs, and they will be the best of friends.

I'm not big on boxers honestly and my shelters near by don't do anything like that they are notorious for "adopting out" other owners lost pets or they euthanize them for no reason so I usually end up driving 1-3 hours to adopt a pet the only time I'd really ever adopt from a local is if the pet has been truly mistreated but %99 of the time they are someone's lost pet and thanks

Skye, forgot to ask, how old is Mishka? Have you thought about looking at your local paper? I'm not big on byb, but my girl is the result of one, I was able to see the the sire and dame, I was able to socialize with them, prior to getting her and I was able to see the containment they were in. Everything looked good, maybe not up to my standard, but the dogs were safe, friendly and well taken care of. I'm not sure what the $125.00 paid for, because I did have to get all of her shots, dewormers, etc, but I would have paid more just because of the feel good atmosphere I felt. I don't know if that helps you any. Not a big fan of boxers as well.

Thanks Renee
I do not let mishka out of my sight when she's outside thanks to my neighbor who's stolen stuff from us and threatened to kill my cats I rarely let her out there alone with my BC who's is as troublesome as a husky but she doesn't play so mishka gets bored thats another reason why I'd like a 2nd but she needs to be kept occupied lol shell get bored with toys and everything then she'll escape that's why I am hoping if she'll have a buddy she won't get so bored and she's about 2 years of age and I got mishka off of craigslist from a guy who adopted her but not recently

Finding a good shelter is as important as finding a good breeder. My latest experience with a local shelter was a bad one and I will never support them by getting a dog from them ever again. I drove 3 hours to get Kenzi from a good shelter. The right dog from a worthy shelter is worth the trip.

Renee: keno was so unsure about how rough and vocal Kenzi was at first but now he bites, growls, and barks right there with her.

I've adopted a dog about three years ago from a shelter that was full of parvo and they wouldn't take the dog back. I had to pay out of pocket on vet bills for euthanization, for testing and for a over the night stay. Luckily that humane society got shut down for it. I will never forget that and I'm putting money aside for my new pup XD(I got mishka at the beginning of the year so it'll be about another year before I get another dog). But if I have enough and I come across a pup sometime soon, I will see if I can adopt/buy it. I think I'm going to get another husky.

Alaskan huskies are mutts, usually a mix of Siberian with hound dogs. I just moved from Oregon to Idaho, and while in Oregon I was a member of the Cascade Sled Dog Club. Many of the other members had Alaskan huskies, so I got to meet a bunch of them. Just about any racing, non-purebred dog can be categorized and called an Alaskan husky, as long as it has Sibe or Mal in it somewhere. I call my Beowulf an Alaskan husky sometimes, since I can't always call him a wolfdog, depending on the local laws.

But yeah, Alaskan huskies are an experiment, with breeders trying to streamline their dogs into the best, fastest, and most efficient racing dogs. I prefer Sibes and dogs closer to Sibes over Alaskan huskies, but that's just me.

Hope that helps!

Kevin,
Miya was sold to us the same as your Beowulf, we always say husky/mix for same reason. I don't think there are any sledding teams here in Texas, so someone goofed, lol. Thanks for sharing and explaining more in depth the little info I did know. Btw a stunning pic, would that be Paw Paw?

Yup, you're right. I just looked it up for you on Sled Dog Central:

And yes, right again!! That certainly is my Paw Paw man in my sig block photo, taken in our back yard in Oregon. Thanks for the compliment!

Edit: Oh, and here's the full size pic, before I cropped it to fit within the parameters of a sig photo:

oooppss,
Kevin I was making a funny, sorry. Miya was sold as husky/wolf(she might as well had been alaskan/husky) quite frankly been trying to figure what other breed she is, def sibe, but unsure if wolfy is right, I lean towards gsd. You are very knowledgeable on the sledding community, and I think it would be fun, we just don't get enough snow here. Please if you don't mind looking at my limited scrapbook of Miya and let me know if she looks different from a sibe, her sire and all her litter mates look like your Paw Paw, Miya looks like her dam. Thanks for all your info.

I figured you were. However, most people across the US don't realize that their area might have a sled dog club. These clubs aren't just for areas that get snow. There are some clubs that lean more towards urban mushing and other dog powered sports, like bikejoring, which I just posted about under the pictures section. Bikejoring, as well as carting, dog scootering, etc. are for the offseason and/or areas that don't get snow. All you need is a bike or other form of transportation, the proper dog gear, and a dog and musher who are motivated to have fun, run, pull, and exercise! It's a great way to bond together, while at the same time experiencing what those Iditarod mushers must feel getting dragged through the snow and ice by 17 huskies! Ha.

I'll go look at your scrapbook right now.

Kevin, I have heard of bikejoring, where do I find info on the other fun stuff you mentioned.

Our winter is about the same. Imho, they are similar to huskies, that's why I have been looking for someone, to help identify what she is mixed with. So husky issues multiplied by at least a hundred. So few people want to help, and then you have to be careful, like our vet, insisted, and I'm glad we took his advice, on listing her husky/mix. I stopped working almost a year ago because of her "issues", severe separation anxiety, severe reactions to certain meds, from violently throwing up to small seizures, , severe destruction of my house, food allergies cannot tolerate grains, and prefers raw only. Her severe separation anxiety is best described as hurricane proportions, we built our house when we first got her, about 4 months of age she was left approximately 2.5 hours in that time she ate and destroyed everything, including staples and drywall mud, when my husband got home she was minutes away from dying because the drywall mud was drying over her nose and mouth. Once we did move into the house, the first night she about tore the door down and so we let her sleep in house with us. about a month later, my husband goes to bed about 9 pm, told her it was bedtime, she didn't want to go to bed and secretly ate the door frame next to her bed. Those are just some of the wonderful things our bundle of joy has done. She is way better, since I'm home, but we do have some form of an issue daily with her. She is also incredibly shy, especially towards men, she will tuck her tail between her legs and fold ears down, hackels up all down her back, she does not do this with women nor children. She was never abused and we got her at 5 weeks of age. Might I add though, she is very loving to us, hasn't ate the cat, and the smartest dog I have ever encountered.
Wanted to add, she does have food guarding specifically with husband and cat. Hates confinement and restraints. It's too expensive for us to build a kennel outside for her, we would need minimum of 10 foot fencing, cement or metal bottom and the fence would have to be limited to less than an inch opening, have seen her fit through an opening in a neighbors fence that appears that only a very small cat could fit. She can scale over 5 feet from a standing position. She jumps on top of the roof of my full sized silverado. She scent rolls everything, she single prints when walking as well as running, she walks in a slinky, prey mode way, head below shoulder level head straight on. I know that these are husky traits as well, but all of these traits are at an extreme. She has a strong prey drive, that I have been working on, she has caught a bird, not an easy thing for a dog to do. You mentioned licking in an other post, this is also done for scenting purposes, she licks so she can "smell" what was there and then scent rolls that spot to put her scent on it. She's a pacer, will pace the floor, stick her nose against the door, you can hear her sniffing, every time we go out she sniffs every inch of our property before she will play or potty. She can be sound asleep, and will get up to wherever I am. She dens under the couch and bed, of course only her head will fit. She will get a unstuffed, stuffed toy and preens it while watching the cat, it put fear into me the first time I saw her do that, it's her way of dealing with not eating the cat and obvious jealousy issues with the cat.
I can't believe all her issues, I'm glad you asked, see it in writing makes me wonder how on earth we've gotten such a well behaved girl. It is a daily adventure with her. Not something I would recommend others getting unless well equipped.

I think it would be easier to find a good breeder, than for a husky in your area, I may know of someone, I'm still a fan of rescues, and not saying spca type rescue, have you looked for husky rescues in your area or state? I have had husky's and gsd's all my life and nothing prepared me for Miya. She is quite a special girl. Her smartness baffles me, we started her on comfortis to protect from fleas, when she was under 6 months she took the pill fine, then all of a sudden she would spit it out, it smelt horrible, you could smell the poison they use, she cold smell it too. so we opted for a smaller pill, she is around 60 pounds, the pill is something like 40-60 and then 60 up. she took it 2 months in a row, then the spitting out started again. Thing was when she did take it she would have explosive vomiting and small seizures, she knew it was bad for her, we use fiproguard now. She's scarey smart.

Do you have any pics of your girl?
