My First Honey Harvest!

So here it is...I finished extracting and bottling (still have more cleanup, though Razz

). From 10 medium frames, 1 super, I got a total of 30 pounds, give a take a few ounces. This shows most of the harvest - 2 pints are at my sons' houses and there is another pint that is partially gone...biscuits and honey, blueberries, whipped cream and honey, toast and honey, tea and....you get the picture Laughing

We still have the fall flow - mostly goldenrod with some black knapweed and aster. If the rain lets up...

Thirty pounds worked out to be 2.25 gallons. If this keeps up, I'll definitely have to start selling it - even with all my sisters and kids, I can't use it all. But, apparently I need to look into insurance...and a husky hair safe place to bottle Laughing

This honey is like none I have ever tasted - very delicate. As my son- trained-taster-the-food-scientist says, "with significant floral overtones." It's also much paler than the photo shows.

Ami, that looks like a beautiful batch, wish I had some since honey down here costs an arm and a leg!

If you don't mind me going sorta off topic. There was a beekeeper down here before I came down but I never got the chance to talk with him. I know there are native<??> local honeybees 'cause they descend on Avalanche's water dish. Can you offer any advice on where I can get information about bees and hives that will live in the south (er, northern Chihuahuan Desert; Deep south Texas)?

Nice Amy, I wish I wasn't allergic to bees and honey. I so miss the taste. Nothing better.
Side note to you Al. There is a local honey maker next town over from me they sell their extras to my local grocery store, I'll see if they have any contact info on their bottles and jot it down for you.

I'm not sure of who to get bees from in Texas but do know that Texas has a vigorous beekeeping industry. The only problem with southern bees is that they can become "africanized" and aggressive. A lot of northern beekeepers actually get bees from the south!

Well, Al - you are in the middle of freakin' nowhere! One well know bee place is Weaver bees in Lynn Grove Texas - at first glance, it seemed close - just on the other side of San Antonio. But knooooowww...Texas is so huge that a small area on the map is....9 hours and 35 minutes from you! They do ship, however - one of our beeclub members is using Weaver bees for varroa resistant stock.

Equipment can be had by mail also but you can contact a local bee association to see where you can get it locally. (Though local may be relative for you Laughing

)

My neighbor is a commercial bee keeper.
He drives hives all over the west to pollinate crops.

I like the berry flavors best.
He also has carrot seed honey that he sells to eastern Europe.
Says it's very strong and not to his liking.

its Amy's fault we're getting bees next year. I only hope my honey harvest is decent.

Just remember - highly unlikely to get honey the first year on new equipment - the bees have to make a lot of comb the first year (unless you have a source of used frames with comb already made - but you'll pay through the nose for it!)
