Puppy has the runs Empty
PostSubject: Puppy has the runs   Puppy has the runs EmptyThu May 15, 2014 5:43 am

I've had Loki for 2 weeks now. He's 11 weeks old and since I got him he's had diarrhea. Had a fecal test done and put him on meds (which he's been on for the last week) and he hasn't gotten any better. He eats fine and is a lot more energetic than my other husky puppy Luna so I'm not too concerned but it is starting to get hotter and I'm worried about possible dehydration. Do you guys have any suggestions on what I can do. He's up to date on all his shots. Has been dewormed twice. I've had him on Blue Buffalo since I got him so I don't think it's the food but just in case I'm going to start transitioning him to a different kind. I'd be really appreciate any advice.

Did you increase his food shortly before this started happening? Too much can cause the runs, especially with a rich food like BB. Or...... did they just do a regular fecal? The regular ones don't test for giardia and coccidia, which are pretty common and cause the runs.

He eats a lot so I'm not sure if it is too much. The fecal test came back negative for everything except he did come back positive for giardia which is what the meds were treating.

If he came back positive for active giardia that's why you have a puppy with the runs. Be very careful as you can get giardia from your puppy! It goes without saying really that picking up and disinfecting the area he's gone in immediately. Wash all toys/bedding that could have possibly come into contact with poo. Once he's had giardia (or you, I speak from the most unfortunate experience) he's more prone to get it again...it actually never goes away, it just goes dormant in the system and can be reactivated by a small introduction of the giardia bacteria or even stress.

Thank you so much for your help. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if the meds do their work.
