PostSubject: Stool problems?   Stool problems? EmptySat Mar 05, 2016 1:19 pm

Hello I have an 11 week old Husky named Tango. Full of energy and a wonderful dog. But, he keeps having "loose" stool. It's literally every other day. I wake up and I instantly go to both of my puppies cages ( Tango's and my Miniature Austin Shepard Blu's ) Tango's cage is always loose stool and his stool is always trampled to death. So I take them outside, clean cages, bring them back inside and once
Tango comes back inside he "does his thing" again but on my floor. His diet is nutrition source which I have leaning him off for about 2 weeks and been giving him science diet. I would be thankful for any tips on this problem and potty training him. Treats don't work cause of the loose stool. If there are any treats I could give him for training I'd be thankful to know also. Thanks man you guys !!

When you say "loose" do you mean sloppy as in pudding like poop or watery as in totally liquid poop or a plop of pudding surrounded by water? Or mucous laden? Sorry for the graphics but it does make a difference...

Pudding poop, at least in my experience, can come from 2 sources. Over-feeding or diet (for me was a combo - I misunderstood the feeding instructions and was giving him 2 cups twice a day instead of 2 cups DIVIDED twice a day. Then, he was on Iams from the rescue, and upshot is Ami does not digest the ground corn. Switched him to first, 4Health grain free (tractor supply brand) and got nice, solid poops. Ultimately switched to Taste of the Wild because I can get home delivery free if I order 2 bags at a time on auto ship (every 13 -15 weeks, depending how much time my son's dog spends with us.)

Totally liquid poop or plop surrounded with water or mucousy persistent over time, then probably time for more vet involvment.

I give him 1 1/4 cup twice a day. It's like pudding. He got his shot 4 days ago. So I thought it was that. But it gets overwhelming since he's not potty trained at all and my fiance isn't good cleaning up waste. So I will try the 4health grain free and see how that goes. What do you suggest for training treats for a young puppy ?

We got Ami at 1 year of age - I just used his kibble - he loves it. Since you are experiencing poop issues, until you get those resolved, I would stick to the kibble as a treat. Also, "they" say - change the food gradually. 1/4 of new food for 1 week, 1/2 of new food 2nd week, 3/4 etc...I've done that and I've just gone cold turkey...did not really notice a difference. But since you are already having belly issues, perhaps 1/4 of the new food 3/4 of the old food for a couple of days anyway and see how it goes.

Good luck!

Ohhh...just saw you've only had him1.5 weeks.  Poop issues are NOT unexpected in this adjustment period.  I would change the diet very slowly to a grain free, as long as no liquid poo, keep on that for a month or two before deciding he needs another diet change.

Hey Tommy! Zhukov is 5 months old and I have gone through the same thing till this weekend. He had worms, so that was part of the problem. We also went through 3 different foods to try to figure out which one was right for him. We tried Blue, Science Diet, and finally settled on Merrick Limited Ingredient (Salmon and sweet potato). One of the best pieces of advice I got here was pumpkin. PUMPKIN! All natural pumpkin, out of a can, not the pie filler. 2 tablespoons per meal of that seemed to really help with the loose stool. It didn't solve it completely for me, due to the worms, but it really helped. Now that the worms are gone, it actually looks like normal poop. Good luck, and enjoy the ride.

As for treats, I use Stewart All Pro Freeze Dried Beef Liver. It comes in a tub and is cubed up. Bite sized and you can put 'em in your pocket and go.

I'm not sure where you are so making suggestions can be problematic ... however, I've also used liver treats before and they do seem to get a pups attention.

Unlike my other message, this is a recommendation Chewy.com seems, to me, to be one of the better places to buy from unless you have a PetCo around the corner (and can afford their prices).  The link is specifically for liver treats and I think I've used the Stewart treats before but they were in a different container.

Two and a half cups each day seems a bit high for a Siberian, even a puppy. I would suggest cutting it back a bit to about 2 cups per day, maybe slightly more. This may be all you need to do to get his poops to solidify.

When Suka came to live with me (I use my experiences with my own dogs for examples a lot), he had loose stools for the entire month of February. He’d been diagnosed with whip worms at the end of January, and I thought he might still have problems with them until I noticed my other dog had loose stools too. Then I figured it must be the dog food and I switched them to something else. Their stools firmed up a little bit but were still pretty runny, so I bought FortiFlora and sprinkled it over their food. When I stopped giving the FortiFlora, their stools started to get loose again. This means I’m feeding them too much, so I’ve cut back ¼ cup each day, and now they’re firming up to where they should be.

That brings me to my next point: FortiFlora is great to have on hand for when loose stools occur. It firms them up quickly while you figure out what the problem might be and make some changes. Many people use pumpkin (I did), but I found it’s more difficult to get my dogs to consume it. I think other people have dogs who love this stuff and I wound up with the only two dogs in the world that hate it. So the FortiFlora worked for me, and a one month supply only cost me $20. It's not for everyone, but I thought I would mention it in case you wanted to give it a shot if the pumpkin isn't working for some reason.

As for training treats, you can use almost anything as long as it’s small enough. Even the ones you buy that are already made small for training are too big. According to my local dog club, you want it to be about the size of a pea. I bought some training treats off of Amazon that worked great, but I go through them quickly when I’m trying to train Suka. So I bought some chicken and steak treats from Walmart that were much cheaper that I cut into really small pieces before a training session and those work great. Suka’s breeder would use miniature marshmallows. Other people might use shredded chicken, carrots, or hot dog pieces. It really just comes down to what your dog loves and is willing to work for.

I have had the same problem and have exhausted all kinds of trials. I think I may have finally found the solution. My puppy, Chuck, is now 5 1/2 months hold. He has never had a "solid" stool from the day I brought him home. On the advise of my vet, we tried numerous kinds of dog food, one even costing $100 a bag, and various prescription medications. Nothing worked!! Friday, I started him on homemade food. A MIRACLE!! He has not had a loose stool since then. The recipe for the homemade dog food is on the dinovite website. I am not promoting dinovite, but all I can say is HALLELUJAH!!

I hope you find the solution too.
