| I have two four year old huskies, one of which acts submissively to the other (my parents') and the more independent one (mine...of course...). I have had them since they were about two months old and within the past year it seems that any obedience Juneau had has disappeared. Though he will still sit and come and sometimes even stay when inside the house he relentless drags me all over outside and usually does not even look at me. Does anyone have any advice? I have had other dogs before and none of my training methods are working, sometimes even indoors he will refuse to obey me. The other one Yoshi is better, but could need some help with him as well. Juneau got out yesterday (slipped right between my legs and out the door) and I watched horrified while he almost was hit by a truck and I had to chase him for 15 minutes until he finally stopped to use the bathroom. This is the last straw for me and I NEED training help for his own safety and my peace of mind. Or at least so that I can walk him without dislocating a shoulder...
If anyone has any tips on this or professional help PLEASE let me know or give me some pointers |

| A few questions: Is he neutered? What kind of collar/lead to you have him on when you walk him? The desire to just "run" is a very typical husky trait. Yes, they will try to run out the door if you give them the opportunity. Often they will be so preoccupied about running free they won't even notice the traffic... To prevent that you just need to be very careful. |

| Yes he is neutered. He has a simple nylon collar and leash, we've been trying to get a harness but I feel like that will only promote his pulling instead, this was the first time he has gotten out like that in a couple of years and we usually take them to the dog park whenever the weather is cooler so they can run around more. He used to be pretty well behaved but lately he won't even come when called inside the house. And as for even trying to walk him, well like a said it's like dislocating my shoulder each time |

| Prong collar. My wife cannot walk Bodhi on a regular leash. He's an compliant angel with the prong collar. |

| I've thought of those, but I was hoping for a less aversive kind of leash training. I really don't want to hurt him which I'm afraid might happen |

| You won't hurt him. Just don't yank hard. A gentle correction is all it takes.
Put one around your own neck and pull. It won't break the skin, but it definitely gets your attention.

| For walking, if you feel like your dog is pulling too hard then I would suggest attaching the leash to the front of a harness. (It discourages pulling) You can also get a leash that attaches around your waist instead of holding it. It wont hurt as much if he pulls on your waist and your hip/leg muscles are way stronger than your arm muscles anyways. As far as getting him to pay attention to you on walks/less pulling in general, I was told that there were four things you can do. Stopping when the leash gets tight, walking in irregular patterns, walking in the other direction, and the "touch" command. They don't eliminate the problem completely, but it sure does help from my experience. Make sure you have a lot of treats when you walk as well so you can reward him with something. I also found that if you can completely tire them out one day, then the next day they wont pull as much. Or at least it seems that way to me... The only way to really prevent them from running away is to make sure you only ever open the door leading outside when they're crated/leashed. You could also contact a professional trainer if you want someone to oversee you step by step. Good luck! |

| Thank you, I have never tried the leash in front of the harness part, he usually will not turn around and look at me unless I refuse to move for too long, he usually doesn't even look if I have food But I will try these |

| You could try super high value stuff at first just to make sure you get his attention. Maybe Ham, Steak, or Bacon? I don't know a dog alive that doesn't go crazy for human food. |

| I strongly second the prong collar - add a bungee leash for shock absorption. I am small, 62 year old lady with arthritis and 60 pound young, male husky. After being dumped in the ditch one too many times, a friend gave me a rok leash and I use a prong collar (search my posts for more information.) I swear by this combo - I now have a wonderful, eager but manageable companion on my walks. Also, give him as much mileage as you can - also helps keep them manageable. |

| We use a Gentle Leader nose lead thing, and it works well, too, to prevent pulling. The advantage of a front clipping harness is that him pulling will turn him toward you. |

| Hi,
first of all - you said he used to be pretty well behaved. Can you think of anything that might have changed this? A traumatic event? Or a change in lifestyle? (less walks, move, etc.)
I am relatively new to this forum and new to huskies (I adopted a stray husky mix, mentioned in another thread in this sections - "How to tell we are making good progress".. from March I think). I was in a more or less same situation - my dog Max is probably in his late teens, judging by his behaviour and what the vet said. He had absolutely no training when we got him, he had to learn his recall from the beginning, leash walking etc. Being a teenager still, he is a real pain so far most of the time but I decided to outstubborn him and it works.
He would pull like crazy on the leash, wouldn't even turn his head when called or even when he heard my voice etc... There is no real secret other than patience and CONSISTENCE. Two and half months after adoption, Max is a different dog BUT it does take almost all my energy so far and it is a matter of constantly paying attention to him. To improve his recall, I make sure to ALWAYS have treats on me, so whenever he comes, even on his own, he gets a treat. Everytime I say "Max" and he looks at me - treat again. For the leash - stop when he pulls and when he turns his head to look at you, walk again. Don't expect him to walk behind you straight away, first he needs to start paying attention to you at all. After that, change directions whenever you can. If he has big trouble following, call his name when you are about to change directions - he will pay attention to you and he knows he will get a treat. It's a long process, after more than two months I make sure Maxi still gets a treat and not only a praise every time he does something well, as I feel it is too soon to stop giving them to him, he won't listen the next time. I don't use a prong collar but a choke chain (no prongs). Mind, I have had dogs before and know how to use it, so please if you choose to use one, make sure you learn how to use them. I must say it worked miracles, but not the "choking" part per se. I actually realised it's the sound the chain makes that makes Max stop. Because he knows as soon as he starts pulling, the chain makes that sounds and I stop. So he knows sound = no walking. This doesn't mean it will go fast. It will still take time. Max does walk faster than me still, mainly because this breed is so high energy. So make sure also to spend enough time with your dogs and provide them with enough exercise. |

| The only thing that I can think of would be that I was not home for a couple of months. He's always been sort of a momma's boy and would follow me around everywhere and sleep in my room with me. Other than that after I got back we went back to how we were, same amount of exercise, if anything more sense it was a colder winter than usual. The weird thing for me is that when indoors it's still pretty easy to get his attention especially if I have food, but I took him outside with a whole bunch of chicken and beef and he still refused to look at me with them. He's being such a weirdo... |

| We use a front leading harness and it has helped a lot with Kai's pulling. She still will occasionally (especially when we see other dogs or animals), but it has markedly improved.
This is the harness we use: http://www.walkyourdogwithlove.com/ but there are a lot of great front leading harnesses. Good luck! |
