| massak's best friends owner told me that the vet told her no biking with her dog when he is still a puppy. her doggie is a 9mo. old lab mix though. I suspect massak is maybe a year and a half old. I am wondering if I should worry about doing any damage by taking him biking a lot. he runs for a good hour or more and covers more ground than me on my bike since he runs in circles sometimes but mostly chases me on the bike. I know they are bred to run and pull so part of me thinks it's ok, but wondering if there is a general consensus. He never shows signs of being tired, but I know dogs will sometimes endure pain out of loyalty too |

| I don't suggest running a dog until they are 12+ months old. You have to let the joints to stabilize and growth plates to close. For puppies the general rule of structured exercise (walking) is 5min/mo of age- puppies should be allowed plenty of free play, not a lot of jumping, and exert most of their energy that way....also plenty of mental stimulation. As they reach age biking is an excellent exercise release for them- investing in something like a Springer attachment makes biking fun and easy for both |

Try puppy class or find a neighbor/friend/family member with a puppy. Puppies wear each other out! Mine had a play date with the neighbors puppy for a few hours and she slept for a straight 8 hours last night. She has also been much calmer than normal all day today. |

| Hello all, I have just got my rescue Sibe, as in 2 days and of course want to make sure I'm exercising him enough and not over exercising. Mom, you say 5 mins per month. Is that total per day or per walk? The rescue centre has been trying to put weight on him and hope this will be better now he has a home and will be less stressed. He's 10 months old, weighs 40 pounds. He's get s fed at 8.30 in the morning, then 45-50 min walk around the park 2 hours later. Fed at 4.30 in the afternoon and same again, 45 mins walk 2 hours later, then a quick once round the block just before bed. Around 11pm. He's just soooo good and has gotten straight into a routine. No fuss or anything. Is that too much because he's not fully grown yet, for his joints or just fine and stop worrying first time Sibe owner so worrying about EVERYTHING Thanks in advance. |

If you subscribe to the 5 min/month rule then that would apply to each walk, not each day.
Keep in mind that a walk is not a walk is not a walk.
It is going to make a significant difference as to what kind of surface you're on, the temperature outside, longevity, breaks, overall health, etc.
A 15 minute jog/romp on concrete is VERY different than a 15 minute jog/romp on grass.
An hour long run on leash at a fast pace is VERY different than a 2 hour long sustained walk on leash.
Gotta use some gut and intuition with that rule.

| Ok well I didn't mean 5 mins per day. I'm not an idiot, just a first time owner so please let's keep it friendly, if you can't please don't reply, thank you. No patronising needed.
I was only going on someone's advice on a forum. 5 mins per month of age, which equals 50 mins. There was no mention of per walk or per day, so I was just looking for clarification, thank you.
The walks in a PARK, is a stroll on......yes grass, as in a park. Maybe the translation gets lost between different words in England and the US for park.
The walk around the block at night before bed is...yes on a pavement or sidewalk, so concrete.
Included in the post was age and weight, but in case you missed it, 10 months old, 40 pounds.
Thank you for your helpful information. |

| Ha, that's funny. I like your sass.
And you're welcome.
And you did in fact ask per day or per walk, just to clarify. First paragraph.
So take that. |

| If I had the experience to have the gut intuition, I wouldn't be a 'newborn' poster on a forum asking perfect strangers with more experience to give kind advice on how to make sure my past mistreated beautiful boy from a rescue home, now had a fulling and fun life from now on.
Kindest regards,
Ian, and Tzar. |

| Look you don't need to get defensive because you aren't being attacked and you don't need to get sarcastic because you aren't being judged.
You're asking for *general* advice about a very ambiguous rule of thumb and I gave it to you.
What I said about surface is *generally* very good advice. If it doesn't apply to you or if you already know that, then great. But that doesn't mean it still isn't *generally* a good point about a rule of thumb that will serve as *generally* good advice.

| And you also don't need to abuse the Bad Advice/Good Advice feature, assuming that was you. You didn't receive Bad Advice you received some lip for your sassyness. We can both play that game.
Shall I bring you down to -2 treats now and see who wins?
You've been here for 1 whole day. It's gonna be okay. Calm down.

| Ok, enough.
And just as a friendly reminder, the "bad advice" button is NOT to be used as "I don't like your opinion" it is ONLY to be used in the event of blatantly wrong or intentionally misleading information.
Thanks. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. This threads needs some chill out time please. Simmer down.
No one is intending to be rude. Remember this is TEXT and not "IRL" so you need to take things with a grain of salt. There is no need for vindictive "un-treating" from ANYONE.

| Read my first post. It was a genuine need for help. A desire to not mess up either my previously ill treated Sibe. In which I received a patronising '5 mins a day is not enough exercise for a husky!'
But, if you saw that as helpful and proportionate, and the correct tone I received, then of course I apologise.
For which he has now edited, and removed. Then came the bully. I'm an ex army Captain who has served, everywhere. So I don't act kindly to being mouthed off at in a threatening nature. And let's face it. If I stop asking for friendly advice the only one who will lose out is my baby boy.
So, thanks for the welcome. |

| Hi, Ian. I understand that you're new here and that nuances are difficult to pick up when communicating through text. First off, Kristina and I were addressing both you and Jeff when we told you to knock it off, and there was absolutely no reason to talk back to both of us.
Jeff came in and gave you very solid advice on looking after your dog. You returned with a little bit of sarcasm and disrespect, and Jeff responded inappropriately. You, sir, are in violation of several of our forum rules, and if you haven't read them (even though they were presented when you joined the forum) I will direct your attention to the little box just underneath our Husky of the Month winning photo. You are in direct violation of rules 1 and 3 at this time, and you have misused our good advice/bad advice system.
Furthermore, if you're going to play the "I was in the Army" game, I will just toss it out that I'm an active duty Navy Lieutenant up for promotion to Lieutenant Commander. I have been serving for 14 years, have been all over the world, and have over 300 combat flight hours in my logbook. I don't take kindly to people using their military status to try to bully and intimidate others, so kindly cease and desist. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | I fail to see how I was bulling. I was pointing out that I don't react well to others threatening me. But you are of course free to defend who you like.
Good luck with the forum. |

| For full disclosure, my edit was this:
My original was: Your Husky can handle more than 5 minuntes per day! It should have said: Your Husky can handle more than 50 minutes per day!...which I then proceeded to explain as to how that can be, which is still posted.
I missed the 0 the first time, in light of the dog's age and the rule it was perfectly accurate and reasonable. After the games I just cut it out to avoid further confusion.
That was it. |

Many thanks. It's a shame to see you go; this place has a ton of useful information here! Sometime the words people write aren't interpreted correctly by others; it's what happens when you lose vocal inflections. I'd take this set of posts as a grain of salt, personally. Clearly, miscommunication occurred, and neither of you are idiots. The first time I read your post, I thought you said five minutes/day, too, not five minutes per month old per day. If you still think it's best to leave, I'm sorry; as a fellow new member, I know I've gleaned a ton of helpful information about huskies from this site. |
