| So there is a surge of new puppy owners lately! I thought this would be a good way to consolidate a lot of the good force free/ positive reinforcement articles that I find and enjoy. I used to be a "punishment" and "balanced" trainer but have strayed from that the past few years and find much better, more fun, more solid results without the use of force. Ceasar Milian and those types are NOT science based and instead are based on OUTDATED incorrect information. One of my favorites which breaks down the "types" of reinforcement/punishment into easy information. With pictures! http://boogiebt.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/notes-from-clicker-expo-part-2-the-four-quadrants-revisited/ I will update as I pull my articles/ books _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! | Thanks for this thread, arooroomom! I have always admired your advice on positive reinforcement. I've even used it on Juneau and my fosters! I'm so glad you're going to compact that advice in one spot. It will be easier for me to find it. |

| Facebook Groups: Very good resources are contained in a lot of their "files" sections. Most here (unless specified) are very trainer oriented and do not act as a "I'm having problem x with my dog- how do I cure it?"
"Force Free Trainers Group" A group I love to lurk. GREAT resource of files.

"Force Free Trainers- Aggression Puzzle" Aggression discussion- force free. Another great file source.

"Observational Skills for training dogs" Another good file resource. A lot on body language and stress.

"Official Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) group" Created by Grisha Stewart (who wrote the BAT book) about her methods for reactivity training.

"Cultural Shift towards positive reinforcement training." Not much about specific methods, but more of a general gathering of force free traininers. A LOT of good articles/blogs/videos are posted.

| Awesome thread. I will definitely have to check out the mouthing videos (I'm one of those new puppy owners you speak of ). The adoption center I volunteered at for the past year (and where Layla now goes for her puppy socialization classes) is a huge proponent of positive-reinforcement training. They are also big on pit-bull awareness and held classes every week for the volunteers to take the pit bulls into the education room for training under the guidance of their lead animal behaviorist. For the last year I was trained in positive reinforcement and clicker training and feel I've learned a TON just by being in those pit-bull classes and watching the behaviorist and interacting with the dogs myself. I've translated this knowledge to Layla's training and so far have been getting great results. Her socialization classes also reinforce this kind of training as well. I will use force if absolutely necessary, such as if she gets something in her mouth that could be potentially hazardous (as with most puppies, she tries to eat EVERYTHING when she's outside: leaves, sticks, pinecones, etc.). Thanks for sharing all the great info and raising awareness on positive reinforcement! |

Also Kristina do you have seven dogs? You really are living the dream. One day. How do you like it so far? I've only got 6 dogs, Mickey passed away about 6 months ago (the black and tan.) Just can't seem to take the picture down _________________ Force Free Training ThreadCheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! Join our facebook meetup group! |

| He is beautiful and it's a great picture! But I am sorry for your loss. Still 6 dogs is pretty impressive. Are they all inside dogs too?
And I am really enjoying it. My dog gets really excited on leash and is slightly reactive but just on leash so I am hoping to try and use the mat to my advantage. Also his point that when your making you do work and think it's more difficult for them to react is something I have found very true in our obedience classes.
Also the book is just a really fun and easy read. |

| what about food guarding against other dogs? i have taught Samoa not to food guard with people. she trusts people now. she came from a large litter so i'm guessing that is where her food and high value toy guarding came from but what do i do? when i taught her to not be that way with people. i would feed her by hand a couple meals a day and i would sometimes make her wait or make her work and she learned to trust people eventually but with other dogs she just full on attacks if another dog gets near her while she eats or when there is a treat near or even at the mention of food. ugh what should i do? any suggestions? thanks |
