Question about rotating dog foods. So I feed koda taste of the wild, he is just finishing his first bag of it and is doing well on it. Switched him off of nutrisca cause the store i go to isnt getting it anymore. Koda cant eat anything with turkey in it. So my question is, for those that rotate flavors between the same brand, so you have to mix the 2 foods like you do when you switch a brand? Or do you just do it cold turkey?

Hmm, I'm personally not too sure. I've always switched Lycus cold turkey and he's always been ok. I've even switched completely different foods instantly and he's never had a problem. I think that if they generally have the same ingredients asides from the meat/flavors, it should be ok? Unless theres a big difference between the two flavors ingredients.

I've used TOTW in the past and we used to rotate the flavors each time we needed a new bag. We were able to do it cold turkey without a problem, but it may depend on the individual dog. We're using Earthborn now, and do the same thing, also without a problem.

It is really going to depend on the dog, but your chances of having a problem free switch will generally be greater when switching within the same brand/line since the majority of the ingredients will be the same. With that said, that is what also makes using other brands in your rotation something of importance if you believe in the value of rotation diets like I do.

I guess im not thay informed about rotation diets. If you want to go between different brands then, how do you go about it? And how often do you switch? After each bag?

All that depends on you and your dog. Some people switch every bag, others every so often depending on whatever works for them. How quickly you can switch depends on your dog and how sensitive their stomach is. My sibe is on the more sensitive side so we switch our base kibble only a few times a year and take that switch over the course of a week or two, but we rotate canned food and freeze dried foods much more frequently. I change canned foods every 3-4 days and freeze dried food I change every bag. Note, I currently mix kibble with canned and/or freeze dried food when I'm not feeding raw.

I change flavors every time I buy a new bag. If its the same brand cold turkey is fine, different brand then I start blending in small amounts over a 2 week period.

If your pooch has a problem with a certain food (ex turkey) just skip that flavor all together.
