| Hello everyone! I would like to introduce myself (as you all seem like the sort of people I would like to know and be known by): I am Amy Henry and I am currently huskyless. My beautiful girl, Shantee, died this past summer at the age of 12 - cancer, we think. I am excited to post pictures of my girl so that she can continue to bring me and others a bit of joy even after...well, you know. I am a newlywed, and my husband has never had a husky, though he knew Shantee well. We are currently saving money to get two huskies (as you all know, one husky leads to two and so on...) These long months without a husky have been somehow empty; finding this website, reading your husky antics, and looking at your silly and beautiful photos is sustenance indeed. I am truly excited to find others as passionate/crazy about huskies as I am. I plan and hope to keep you all updated on my new husky puppy search as it unfolds. Thank you all for being here! Your doggies are wonderful and they make me happy A.J.H. |

| Welcome to the forum I saw that you saw I was in Wisconsin as well Where around there are you? We're in Eau Claire. Aw, RIP Shantee. Can't wait to see pics of her, I'm sure she was stunning If you need help with a breeder feel free to PM me, we didn't get Embry from the best breeder, we got him from a local breeder/friend but before we found Karma, I looked at tons of breeders. |

Congrats also on your recent marriage, the family is growing rapidly! lol That's okay, less than 2 months after my hubby and I got married we adopted our first dog together. Can't wait to hear about the pups you plan to add to the family. _________________ |

We do check out the Husky Rescue sites a lot, but I am very nervous to adopt. I have seen friends that have rescued or gotten older puppies from humane societies and had really bad experiences. But maybe next year, when we are able to get huskies, it could be an option, considering I now know a wealth of people here on Itsahuskything that have adopted successfully. |

A lot of us have adopted dogs and I'm sure we can all admit having our ups and downs with adopting adult dogs. But then again I've never met a person who didn't have both good and bad experiences even raising a puppy. It's entirely possible to have a nightmare of a time raising some pups and then some adult rescues can be an absolute breeze. I'm just saying it's possible so it can't hurt to look at both options, breeder vs rescue. Keep in mind also that there are plenty of husky pups in shelters and rescues as well if you prefer a younger dog. All three of my dogs are adopted and each of them came with some issues that we've had to work on, that's to be expected when taking in an adult dog. If I had it to do all over again, knowing what I do now about them and what kind of work we would need to put into them, I would still do it all over again. I have heard a good share of doggy horror stories and I have yet to hear a single one that could not be resolved with proper work, training, knowledge and attention. In the majority of those horror story cases it boiled down to lack of knowledge, time and training. All 3 of my adoptees are wonderful and with just a few months of training have turned into amazing dogs. I will admit that my husky was a challenge for the first three months we had him. He was 2 yrs old when we adopted him and was an unruly dog with separation anxiety, chewed anything he could get his mouth on, destroyed clothes and furniture, and pulled like a steam train on the lead. Only a couple weeks after we adopted him I told my husband I couldn't take it anymore and that I wanted to take him back to the shelter. My husband and I had a long heart to heart and decided to persevere and give our adopted sibe another shot. It took 3 months of time, patience, exercise, and intense training but it was worth every second to turn him into the amazing boy he is today. Three months was not much at all and certainly is not more than you'll have to put into raising a puppy. _________________ |

| Welcome, Amy! I too am sorry about the loss of your Shantee. RIP husky girl. I'm going to echo the previous sentiments. I wouldn't do it any other way if I had the choice to buy a puppy or adopt all over again. All dogs come with work, puppies included. You just have to make the decision which is right for you. When you are ready, I would start visiting shelters and rescues, just to see what is out there. If you do decide to go the puppy route, please check out this thread to make sure you find a reputable breeder How to Find a Reputable BreederWelcome to the forum! _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| Thanks for the adopting advice everyone! It's clear you all share a passion on the issue and I will definitely consider adopting when the time comes.

| Welcome Amy! So sorry for your loss Do consider adoption, I have placed 10 or more rescued huskies in the last 3 years and have 2 rescues of my own that I can leave alone in the house without issue (not many husky owners can say that). Raising puppies is a lot of work and unfortunately causes lots of huskies to end up in shelters as the cuteness wears off and the owner is overwhelmed by the adult behavior. As a foster parent of the huskies I placed I can tell you I do a lot of socialization and training as well as vet care before they are adopted, something you don't get with most breeders. |
