| Hi, everyone. I happened upon this site when googling my question about Yorkies and Huskies getting along. I would like as many opinions as I can get, so I'm sorry if this question has already been asked more than once! We currently have a 7 year old Yorkie that we brought home after my fiance's grandmother passed away. She had been an only dog, and spoiled rotten. She does well in our home, and she is very good with us and my two daughters, but gets very protective of us and territorial around other dogs or humans she doesn't know well. She has been fine around smaller dogs, however. Our dilemma: We have an opportunity to get a new Yorkie pup from a good friend. We also stumbled upon (well, I went looking) some gorgeous Husky pups that will be ready to go to new homes in a few weeks. We know the obvious choice, is probably the Yorkie, since Lulu (our Yorkie) probably wouldn't have such a problem here. However, both my girls and I have wanted a Husky for a long time. I guess I'm curious if any of you have personal experience with both breeds living peacefully together, or if it really is best in your opinion to keep them separate. I had a Husky years ago who was so sweet and loving, and I couldn't imagine her hurting anyone or anything, but she was an only dog. I want to make the right call here, and would love to have a happy home with different dog breeds being friends, but I know this may be wishful thinking. Any advice, personal experiences will be much appreciated! Thanks for reading my LONG post! |

| She really is never around them to be honest. If she sees one in the neighborhood, she does bark and growl, but not much else. I just don't know if it's something she would get used to, or if it's best to avoid it... |

| I feel like I've posted my story in every thread like this. There are many threads talking about little dogs and huskies. Some people have great success, others (like myself) not so much. My yorkie's were 7 when we brought home our first husky. Within less than a year our beloved husky killed my teacup Yorkie. I'm linking a previous thread you can check out and read my story more in detail, if you would like and other peoples opinions. https://www.itsahuskything.com/t8915-new-syberian-husky-and-a-toy-yorkie?highlight=Yorkie |

| Well, that breaks my heart. I am so sorry just like everyone else. This really is a tough call, and I keep going back and forth. Thanks so much for the input. |

| I have a 6 year old Silky (Roxy) who is about 10 pounds (not sure how big your Yorkie is). I got Meekai at 8 weeks and and she was smaller than Roxy (not for very long!) They are best friends now (they do get in little tiffs but not for long). Roxy will chase Meekai around in a circle and get her tail while she is running, and then Roxy goes flying through the air. I know this may not work for every dog but it worked for us. Good luck! |

| My yorkie mix was my childhood dog and never liked bigger dogs particularly when he got older and they were puppies. He loved other small dogs like himself. I would just take into consideration the feelings of your current dog. If you do go for it, I would advise to let yorkie have special privileges. Mine when I watched him got to sit on my bed and couch while the other dogs did not. He was also allowed under and behind furniture and my big puppies were not. Overall I can say it could be done, but when I watched my yorkie mix when my parents needed me too I think my lab irritated him to no end as he was so high energy on top of being big.
If you go for husky maybe get an older one socialized with small dogs so the energy is better match. |

| My husky is great with small dogs. But only if the small dog is good with him. I notice that a lot of smaller dogs don't like him for whatever reason, and they will bark at him a lot. For the most part, he is good about just ignoring them. But if it gets to a point where the little dog is relentless about barking and nipping at him, he will put them in their place. And of course, it looks bad because he's so much bigger, but people need to control their small dogs just as much as i have to control my big guy! |

| I agree with getting an adult that is good with small dogs. Dizzy was absolutely awful with them as a pup. He just thought they were really fun squeaky toys! Now, he's actually very funny with them. He really likes small dogs, and will often try to befriend them. Most of the time though they attack his face and he just puts his ears back and walks away or woos at them. Or he'll follow them at a distance. He would be fine with a Yorkie, but I still wouldn't trust him alone. I don't think he'd intentionally hurt a small dog, but he might injure one if it decided to play with him. I've seen him put medium sized dogs in their place, but a small dog could be hanging off his nose and he'd just walk away. He seems to understand his size now and that they are just little pipsqueaks that are not threatening. |
