| I have an almost 10 week old puppy and she doesn't want to go on walks at the start of them. After I finally coax her to get 100 ft or so from the door to my apartment she relaxes a little bit and walks for a little while (maybe 2 minutes) but then gets to a point where she turns around and wants to go back.
I have tried using treats which helps her move forward sometimes.
Also, what seems to work a little bit at the beginning is using a retractable leash with it all the way extended. She'll normally just sit when she doesn't want to walk. I will unlock the leash and walk as far away as the leash will let me and she will come to me and continue to walk. Sometimes I have to do this 3 or 4 times before she will walk structured at all.
She normally walks really well to the place we take her to go "potty" at.
Any ideas on getting her to walk? |

| This is very normal. Around this age puppies have a sort of den mentality. If they walk away from their "den" (your home), they get very anxious. In the wild this anxiety served to protect them predators by keeping them closer to the rest of the pack. At 10 weeks old your pup may be a little too young to go on regular walks, especially since she doesn't have all her vaccinations yet. Until she's fully vaccinated she shouldn't be in any areas where other potentially unvaccinated dogs frequent (parks, hiking trails where dogs often go, pet stores, etc.), unless you carry her. She's still young and learning about her world, so play with her indoors and in the safety of your yard, if you have access to one, and work on training. At this age it won't take much to tire her out. Up until 12 to 16 weeks is also a key socialization imprinting period in a pup's life, where they learn how to respond to certain stimuli in their environment (all kinds of people, touch, cars, other dogs, different walking surfaces, etc.). Puppy socialization classes offer this kind of socialization in a safe environment with other pups that are up to date on their vaccinations. You might want to consider enrolling your girl in one. Hope this helps. Good luck! |

| I used to carry Dizzy around the neighborhood a lot when he was that age. It helped get him used to the sights and sounds of the city, but also he got to meet lots of people. Carrying him kept him safe from the disease issue Liz mentioned, but still got him out and about. |
