| I have a 4 year old MALE. He is in good health and gets full comp exams twice a year. He has always had "loose stools" but they definitely were easy to pick up, more like "mushy". He has always been on high grade kibble, wellness limited ingredient and wellness core ocean formula. We go out for about an hour a day. During the first 15 minutes, he will have a normal-to-him stool, and about 15 minutes later he will poop a small amount again but this time with a yellowish-stringy mucus. Not much, but at least a 1/2 table spoon amount. I went to the vet yesterday and did full GI tests (gardia, intestinal parasites, fecal exam) nothing. All negative. The doctor put him on Metronidazole (500 mg tabets) twice a day just incase he does have parasites and the tests came back false negative. He is currently switched to white rice and boiled chicken for the next week while i give him his antibiotics. My question is, does anyone else with their huskies ever see this mucus before? It doesn't happen every stool but at least 2 times a week maybe 3. I was also wondering if i should try adding fiber powder to his meals after hes done with his meds.
Side notes: I have tried adding Advita probiotic to his food, which seemed to help a little, but the mucus returned. Also, he tries to eat grass sometimes, but i'm not sure if he does it for self medicating purposes or he just likes it? I restrict the grass eating but sometimes he swipes a few blades or two during the walk.
Also, he is 44.8 pounds MALE, which his fill in doctor said he's underweight, but his primary care doctor who is currently on maternity leave never really mentioned he was underweight. You can feel his spine and a little on his hip bones, but his ribs are not seen and not easily felt. Is that weight okay? He is Canadian Kennel Club certified, not sure if that makes a difference? |

| Over/under weight is really hard to tell without pictures. Have you ever tried a different brand of dog food? |

He's been around the block with foods. Simply Nourished from Petsmart, Blue Buffalo Basics (which really messed him up) but primarily Wellness Core-Protein focused to Wellness Limited Ingredient (which he probably did the best on). I just bought a bag of the lower protein Taste Of The Wild Sierra Nevada formula (25% protein), which he did okay on for a few days (saw no mucus) but i took him off for the boiled chicken and rice for the meds. I will definitely reintroduce the TOTW kibble after the meds. Just wondering what the heck could be causing the "colitis" I guess? Food Intolerance? Allergy? His skin and coat are very nice. No rashes, redness, very soft coat even though he only gets a bath once every 2 months. |

| If he seemed to be doing good on the lower protein TOTW, I would definitely try to reintroduce him to that. Having those kind of stools seems like it could be an intolerance to something. He looks like he's in really good physical shape from the pictures you posted.
Not much help but I'm sure someone else can chime in. _________________ |

| Switching foods frequently can cause issues. I'm not sure why you took him off the TOTW for his meds? I've never had to do that before. If he does well with TOTW, then I would put him back on that when you are able and stick with it. |

| My hopes were to get his diet to something bland and figure out if its a food allergy and if the mucus would appear if he was just on a chicken and white rice diet, then slowly introduce the kibble back to see if it would start up again. |

| It sounds like all the foods you've tried have been grain free but you're giving him rice as a part of his bland diet? Have you considered cutting out the rice? If you want to figure out whether it's an intolerance, maybe try a non-meat protein like egg and some veggies as fillers to reset his system, then gradually reintroduce a single ingredient at a time? From what I understand this can be very time consuming but is worth it in the long run if it is indeed a food intolerance. Good luck and I hope you're able to figure out a solution. |

| Purina probiotics. Nutrisource chicken/rice mixed 50/50 with low residue dog food from vet seems to have rid my two huskies of most poo issues. |
