| Get yourself a well-fitted prong collar. (If you search my posts - I left a link for someone else on where to get a prong collar with a side buckle - much easier to put on. Also, I think their site does a good job of showing how to fit a prong collar. Walking my year old male has become a treat since I use this.)
Then, know that your dog wants to go. When he does what you want, he gets what he wants. So, when he goes all squirelly - just stop. when he settles down, start walking again. When he goes bananas, stop. Keep repeating. You may even have to start by stopping his walk altogether and returning home. Know that you are the boss and he gets what he wants when you get what you want. Simple to say, very hard to do. My sympathies - on my initial walks with the beastie boy, we would go 10 ft. stop, 10 ft. stop. Very frustrating but ultimately effective. No yanking or yelling, just - stop. Oh, just remembered. I briefly had problems with Ami thinking the leash made a great tuggie toy while walking. So we did the stop and wait thing. Then, when we would go he would still try to play with the leash. So I went "close-hauled" on him (his rok leash has a traffic handle close to the snap shackle so I could hold him uptight and personal - that meant no smells, ditches, voles, just walking. I've not trained to heel because his walking out front keeps my arm extended and relieves the nerve pain from my spinal stenosis. Also - we live in the boonies and I let him be a dog on our walks since there is no traffic here.)
Also - how old is your boy - he sounds like a young puppy. |

| I don't know that a prong collar is appropriate for a 4 month old pup - you need to research this. The rest of the tips will work but keep your training sessions short. Right now your baby just wants to have fun - maybe play with him before walking. |

| Try to notice if you give him space when he's jumping on you. If you take a shadow of a step back it's like inviting him to to it again.
I solved my jumping problem simply by walking into him instead of taking a step back. If my dog wanted to get physical with me i'd do the same to him. Want to bite? My hand can ''bite'' back.
Want to pull? I can pull harder! I just never let him win on anything during walks. Especially not him becoming pĥysical with me.
Of course you gotta bee careful not to hurt him. What you want is the point to go across. I'm leading here, not you.
Just don't let yourself be the follower. It'll only get worse as he grows up. |
