Hey everyone. First time poster, first time Siberian owner. My wife and I brought home a beautiful 8 week old siberian husky 2 weeks ago. She's doing great, except we're not sure if she's growing enough. When we brought her home, she was 10.2 lb. Today she is 11.2 lb. In two weeks she's only gained 1 lb.

Everything I've seen says she should be getting between 600-700 calories per day, and we've been giving her close to 900 calories per day by what we can calculate (50g Evo wet Dog Food, 20g kibble, 3x per day). She scarfs her food down very quickly. She seems to have plenty of energy. Am I missing something? Thanks for your help.

Has she been tested for worms?

Tested, no. But she's already received a de-wormer. She's due for her next round of stuff today (shots and whatever else is due).

I would have them do a fecal when she's in there, when I got my first kittens 10 years ago they had been dewormed and yet still had a worm infestation that caused the one kitten to not grow for a couple weeks.

She does also have gas already. Don't know if that means anything.

Having gas is an indication of some sort of issue, likely food based. It's kind of a gross topic of conversation, but how are her poops? (We have lots of poop discussion on here) If it's soft or mushy, she may not be tolerating the food. What is she eating? A lot of Huskies have food sensitivities, and both of our girls had horrible food-triggered diarrhea when they were puppies. You may need to do some trial and error with food. Take a look at some of our food threads, and definitely make sure your vet does a fecal worm test when you're there today.

All her food is grain free. We only have one kibble, and we're transitioning out of it. We've been using Evo brand patte, 4 different meat sources, rotated as often as possible. Her poops seem relatively good now. They were very runny the first couple days. Then they started to firm up. Dark, but not black. Firm, but not hard. She goes infrequently tho. It's not consistent yet.

When Nala was a pup she was supposed to be de-wormed but when we took her for her first round of shots we found that she wasnt, she has very very very soft stool almost liquid it was horrible so just check her stool its very common for pups to get worms and all other sorts of things! YUCK.

I second the worm thing. It's a pretty short list of things that will prevent a pup from growing properly.

Question: I've never heard of Evo before (not news, since there are a zillion different types of dog foods out there). I did a quick google search and it looks like a really good brand. In looking at their wet food, I did see several varieties of meat, but when I looked at them more closely they were labeled for adult maintenance.

So (stupid question time) I was wondering if you are using puppy or adult food? Puppy food is typically higher in protein and fat for growth and such.

This is by no means a snide or mean spirited question! Please don't take it as such! I always like to start from the easiest solutions (ie: is the device plugged in?) and then go from there. Even if it seems silly.

As far as dog food goes. It's a very easy to pick up the wrong food by mistake, as dog foods from a certain brand are usually very uniform in design. (I did that with a bag of "lamb and rice" once...oh, the poop-manity!)

There's no reason to feed puppy food anymore,especially with canned based foods. Most people worry about the Ca:P ratios of foods for puppies, but most foods, adult or puppy, are fine. We feed raw now, but fed adult to Cato when hew as a pup and he grew completely fine.

I'd grander the real issue is with the rotating of the protein sources. Just stick to one for at least a few days, preferrably at least a week, and allow her tummy to get used to it.

Get that fecal in, but she may just be a little thing. Don't worry too much yet.

I think she may just be petite but here is the weight and age I recorded for my girl. You can always use it for comparison. My boy's weight on the other hand was different (he is quite heavy, I think he will be around 25 kgs when matured) from day 1 so they are all different and they develop at different pace so if she is being regularly warmed and fed high quality diet (Evo seems to be rated very well) there is no need to worry.
Winter is very healthy but light as she has a petite frame (tall enough though, within the standard):
8 weeks      - 9.24 lbs
10 weeks    - 13.2 lbs
11 weeks    - 14.7 lbs
17 weeks     - 22.5 lbs
8 months old - 33 lbs
9 months old  - 35 lbs
