On our walk last night we came across a newly fenced pasture with a horse and 2 young-ish cows (ok, maybe steers, I didn't look - bovine meat creatures.) As we approached the near corner of the pasture, the horse took mild notice of us, turned a bit but was mostly unimpressed.

The bovine creatures, however, came running at full speed from the far back of the pasture. Right up to the fence. Ami also proceeded to prance with high interest towards the fence (I didn't let him too close -"fence" was 2 lines of wire on temporary fiberglass rods - probably electric  ) At which point, horse thought this was getting interesting enough for him to check it out.

As Ami proceeded to prance, jump, play bow, and twirl around, the bovine creatures joined in and jumped, bucked and ran back and forth along side the fence. Horse trotted back and forth, now really interested also. Ami actually barked once. Never heard him bark before, usually just a basso profundo woo-woo. After watching this for a bit, it dawned on me that the fence was not particularly sturdy and bovine creatures, though young, were still pretty substantial. With hooves. So I urged Ami on and we walked beside the fence while the creatures ran and danced beside us 'til they could go no more.

What a cool experience. Who knew that cows were playful??

Cows, when handled often, are not all that different from dogs in my experience. I grew up on a cattle farm. We had horses and cattle. Sometimes the horse would chase the cows and sometimes the cows would chase the horse. Our current cows love to chase my old black dog, though he's gotten where he will just lay down and wait them out, but they will stomp their feet and moo at him to try and roust him out very similar to what other dogs do to encourage play. You may not see it as often with large farms with hundreds or thousands of cows but small farms with owners who spend a lot of time touching or hand raising their animals tend to have more interesting and lovable cows, which only makes it harder when it comes time to eat them. They will be a fun new aspect to your walks, I'm sure.
