1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

My Husky thinks she's a cattle dog Empty
PostSubject: My Husky thinks she's a cattle dog   My Husky thinks she's a cattle dog EmptySat Nov 16, 2013 3:51 pm

I had to share my adventure this week. Its funny now, but at the time I was panicking and fuming in turns.

I was on a hike with some friends and our dogs. I had let Murphy off leash because she was being good- coming when I called and staying with the pack. This is pretty normal for us, I have worked very hard on her recall and usually don't have a problem. This trail, however, had sections of open space that cattle are grazed on during the winter. We ran into the herd. No big deal at first, I grabbed her leash and we walked by the cows. I thought we had moved past the herd (didn't drop her leash at this point, we were still too close) and wasn't paying close attention. She was. She saw a few stragglers and lunged quickly, managing to yank the leash out of my hand.

A merry chase ensued with Murphy nipping heels and chasing some very upset cows with me running after and calling for her. Finally she manages to herd her small group (she kept about 15 cows moving and together!) for about 10/15 mins until they came to a fence and couldn't go anywhere. She then decides she is bored of this game and is ready to come back. With cow crap ALL over her.

I'm learning that the Siberian Husky is a very versatile breed, they can do anything if THEY want to do it... She is very effective at moving cattle, just in the direction SHE wants them to go!

Haha, such a funny story!

Sounds like she had fun in the end, even though she got covered in cow poop.

ThTs funny! But im sure not at the time. Jack and sierra were off leash yssterday and ran a head to a couple and their dog yesterday, jack came up behind them snaping his jaw, the guy got a hick out of it, glad he did not think jack was gonna bite him! They do keep us on our toes.

That's too funny! We're huskies originally (in Siberia) bred as livestock dogs, but because of their toughness and endurance also were used for sled dogs?

Not a very big difference between hunting and herding. All dogs came from wild "canines" so they all have the hunting instinct buried in them someplace. At least Murphy seemed to be only playing and gave up once the chase stopped, mauled cattle can get to be expensive real fast!

Kenzi would like to chase some horses that live down the road from us. She gets excited when we walk by. It doesn't help that the horses are very reactive to her and start running and jumping as we walk by. The people who own them I'm sure hate us because it gets the horses stirred up, but the way I see it if they were better at training their horses they would have desensitized them to dogs since there are so many around that aren't on leash.

Kenzi got to try and chase cattle once. It only ended up in them chasing her instead. They are fun to watch.
