| I haven't seen any threads on this food, so I thought I would start one. We recently (for a NUMBER of reasons) switched our guys over to Earthborn Holistic. The biggest factor was price. Our local store does a buy 10, get 1 free (it's actually an Earthborn sale and they participate) and that would make the overall price of it cheaper than TOTW. I like the ingredients better and the company as a whole has a better reputation than Diamond which makes me happy (although I would still happily go back to TOTW if this didn't work). We've only been using their Grain Free line. We started a couple of months ago switching them to the Earthborn Holistic Primative ( http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/us/dog_formulas/primitive_natural/ ). The proteins in it where White Fish, Turkey, and Chicken. I thought they would like the added protein and flavor. Their stools were pretty firm on it and I have to say, they went white MUCH faster on this than TOTW. I don't know if we've mentioned this elsewhere, but we see one of the benefits of a raw diet is less clean up in the yard. The stool turns white and chalky within days and just disintegrates. It's something about the food being digested better and only the waste is passed. Well, on TOTW that took weeks. On Earthborn, this took maybe a week, which is great! I feel like it's a healthier diet for them overall. However... we didn't stick with Primative. They were really REALLY gassy on Primative. It must have been either the turkey or the chicken. So, I returned the half-eaten bag to the store and picked up the fish formula (Coastal Catch: http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/us/dog_formulas/coastal_catch/ ). It's a bit more expensive (by $5 or less) but still, with the buy 10 get 1 it still makes the purchase comparable to TOTW. We are now on the Coastal Catch and the stool results are the same and the gas is gone. Clearly my two thrive on fish!! I've also noticed less eye goobers and I have to continue to monitor, but I think Koda's dandruff has cleared up!! (He's ALWAYS had it regardless of the food we've been on--- this would be the first kibble that he doesn't have it, but I'm not convinced it's gone just yet. I figured it was worth mentioning the possibility though!) Anyway... feel free to share your experiences with Earthborn. I think John and I are very pleased with it's price point, the company, and the quality of the food. ETA: I forgot to mention the most important part!! The dogs LOVE it. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| I've know a few people of Earthborn and their dogs do really well on it. I've looked at the Coastal Catch as well as a kibble to rotate in with their Orijen. I think I will try it once I get through their current rotation kibble, providing it is less than Nature's Variety Instinct Salmon Meal.
Thank you for the feedback!
Also, Orijen has a 'buy 12 and get 1 free'. _________________ |

| I like earthborn, however maggie refuses to eat it. I was comparing it to taste of the wild as well. I guess maggie knows the taste difference. |

So glad you decided on this one Ashley We were going to feed it, but switched to raw. It's high quality and I have heard nothing but great reviews. Keep us posted! |

| I am also thinking of switching my pups to Earthborn Primitive Natural and Coastal Catch. But when I send them an email about the calcium/phosphorus ratio I received this;
Michelle,
Thank you for your interest in Earthborn Holistic Natural Food for Pets. I don't have min and max on our calcium and phosphorus in my listing but the mins are calcium 2.45% and Phosphorus 1.5%.
Cindy Montgomery VP, Marketing Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.
Has anyone tried feeding this to puppies?

| Earthborn is a pretty palatable food but calling it high quality is a stretch. All the formulas are high ash especially Primitive and the others use a ton of pea protein and other pea products. "Peas" can mean almost any legume as well, so don't think green sweet peas are in the food. In some of these price-point GF foods pea protein is half of total protein content. Carbohydrate content is also high in some of them.
That is not high quality in my book. You would be better off with Dr. Tim's Momentum and Pursuit where meat protein is well over 90% of total protein and carbs are low. In the case of Momentum, about the same carbohydrate content as Evo.
Really not a great product but like TOTW it is priced so many people can feel fashionable using a grain free product. The health of the dog is secondary.

| Can you support your claim that pea protein makes up half the protein? While peas are the third ingredient, and pea protein is the fifth, fish meal makes up 3 of the top 11 ingredients. I would still claim that fish makes up the majority of protein in the diet.
And for someone who claims that you would like to see a controlled experiment happen, I have tested Eagle Pack Holistic, Innova Evo (before the p&g buyout), TOTW Pacific Stream, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, California Naturals, and Earthborn Holistic on my two dogs and I am happiest with Earthborn Holistic by far.
Why would I choose Dr. Tim's when my two are allergic to grains and rice/grain makes up the second ingredient in both of those foods?
I don't mind if you recommend other options, but at least recommend something comparable. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

Hear hear! Why haven't we banned this fool yet? he make claims and never backs them with legitimate information. He puts people down like the statement above. Furthermore his motives don't appear to be about animals at all but rather sales. |

Furthermore his motives don't appear to be about animals at all but rather sales. Since when do we ban people for not posting things that we agree with or for not answering our questions? When a person breaks the rules they are warned. Three warnings equal a ban. | Not for nothing, but how would you know if he has been warned or not for when he has broken the rules? Up until a few days ago, no one was being warned for their behavior and he was by FAR not the only one breaking rules.
I may be many things, but I am fair. When the rules became more strictly enforced, that went for everyone. I don't pick and choose who I enforce them for.
From now on if there are questions regarding the discipline of this forum, they can be addressed via PM. I hardly feel it's appropriate to be publicly discussing it. I don't find that any less disrespectful than blatant insults and condescending talk. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

I don't mind if you recommend other options, but at least recommend something comparable. Yes maybe the majority, but the majority is 51% of the GA protein which is not something I would want. My comment, if you read, is that the "price point" grain free foods are frauds because of the heavy use of concentrated "pea protein" and "potato protein" on top of peas and potatoes. This is exactly the game Purina plays with corn gluten, which chemically is the same as "pea protein" but the latter sounds better. Corn gluten is actually much better for dogs. I did not specifically comment on Earthborn Coastal Catch but this food would prove very light in animal protein compared to others. When you look at a food like this remember peas are about 30% protein and "pea protein" is a whopping 85% protein, much more than fish meal at 65%. Just do the math and you will see. As for Dr. Tim's, the order means nothing because you don't know the weights of the ingredients. Also, brown rice is 2 - 3% protein, so simple math tells you it is a minor ingredient. Think about it, how much rice could be in a food with 35% protein??? If the food was nothing but rice, total protein would be 2 -3%. I can't comment on your statement about allergies, but I suspect your dog isn't allergic to rice. The hysteria about grain allergies has been created by the internet. There is no basis in fact for this. A dog can't even scratch anymore without the owner going into a near nervous breakdown about allergies. It is essentially fiction.

You're on thin ice. Snarkiness will get you nowhere. I did read your comment and responded maturely. Consider this your final warning before a ban. Allergies have nothing to do with my "dogs scratching." It's that the foods don't agree with them. I find mooshy and unformed stool a good indicator of that. It's a common fact that ingredients are listed by weight. So with rice being the number 2 ingredient it most certainly is a major ingredient. _________________ www.itsahuskything.com It's a husky thing... you wouldn't understand. |

| You are totally wrong. How much rice could be in a food that is 35% protein and 25% fat????? The calories from rice are about 17%.
Listen, when you don't know the actual weights it is hard to judge the amounts without more info.
If rice is only 2-3% total protein and the food is 35% how much rice could there be in there? How many other proteins are in Dr. Tim's, add those up. They are all animal sources.
I know what I am talking about. If you don't like the facts then believe what you want. At the end of the day you are feeding a pea diet with some meat. Pea Protein is 85% protein, substantially more than chicken or fish meal. Dried peas are about 30%.
Figuring out the quality of the food is much more than reading the label. This is the game being played in the marketing of grain free foods. |

You don't provide links or sources. You even judged me for feeding raw. How could an instameal be better than that? The moment you provide factual info that would be better than my vets I might listen. Until then you could be making it up for all everyone knows, and that's how it seems. For what its worth. |

This is absolutely correct and holds true for both dog and human food, so Tori is correct we do have a very good idea of how much rice is in Dr Tim's. So before you go telling people they are totally wrong I'd do a bit more homework. _________________ |

| So I'm thinking about switching over to Earthborn...realized in the store yesterday that it is a few dollars cheaper than TOTW. I've used it before as a supplement to the TOTW when I received a free bag from a newly opened store near the house. Our store also offers the buy 10 get one free which would be helpful as well. Thanks Tori for adding your personal view on this. |
