So Loki is nearing 9 months and tonight, for the second time this month when I went to pull him away from something he turned around and put his teeth on me.  He did not bite, he made a whiny growly sound and just put his mouth on my wrist.  I told him no and he was placed in his crate to give him a time out (and me )


I have never had a dog do that to me before, so I am unsure how to proceed.  I am the one who feeds him, I share walking with my sons.  I believe it was his way of warning me, but I don't want him to feel this is acceptable to do.

What should I do next time.....

some more info that may be helpful, he is taken outside to run around on his harness several times a day, and is walked twice. Maybe he needs more? He sleeps in his crate at night because he can't be trusted out yet (he dug a hole in my couch). He is in his crate approximately 4 hours a day while work schedules overlap.

Definitely not behavior you want. Did you tell him, "Out", or "Leave it", or similar before pulling him away from whatever it was? I'd do that first and then go hands on if needed. If he puts his mouth on you or growls, a firm "no" is definitely in order, and maybe a hand wrapped around his muzzle so his mouth is held closed if "no" doesn't get the point across. Shouldn't be a hard squeeze, you're not looking to hurt him, just an attention getter so he knows you're the one in charge and are not happy.

I would try to avoid using the crate as a punishment. That should be his safe spot, especially if he's in it when no one is home. Although, if he just needs a spot to calm down in, telling him to kennel isn't necessarily bad. Just make sure you praise him for going inside. The kennel should be a positive place.

Koda does the sometimes he is getting a lot better though. What i do now is when i give him a brand new bone or something that he really likes i will keep grabbing it from him after i give it to him. After a few minutes i usually let him have for it for a while and it seems like this is helping the bone gaurding. But when he doesnt it sometimea i immediatley tell him no. I then tell him off and take it from him and he doesnt get it back. Depending on what it is il ether throw it away or not give it back to him for a few days if its expensive.

He was digging under the couch for speaker wire, something I have pulled him away from before. I first told him to leave it, twice!, then I got him by the collar and he rolled over and did the whiny growley sound, then put his mouth on my wrist, he did not apply any pressure but I don't want him doing even that! I felt his teeth of course, but he was not biting. I told him no bite, put him in his crate.

Loki definitely has some attitude lol. He came in here at 8 weeks old and I knew he wanted
to be alpha even then. There are no problems with his getting along with my other male Husky Balon (they are brothers from same parents different litters). My female lab is so submissive she isn't an issue lol. Balon once in a while will still put him in his place if the need arises.

I knew I shouldn't have put him in the crate afterwards, and I let him out after 5 minutes. He definitely came out knowing he had pissed me off. He came over to me for affection, which I gave him.

I will definitely try the muzzle hold next time. I think I need to ramp up his training too!
