Hello Everyone,
I am getting a 13 month old rescue Husky male December 9th. He is not fixed yet, but I plan on doing that ASAP. I don't want him marking my house. My Dad has a Husky so I am familiar with the demands of owning one. My question is, should I have an appointment ready for him the day I pick him up, or should I let him adjust to his new home first? I don't want to stress him out with the adjustment of a new family AND surgery right off the bat. Any advice? I have gotten my 2 other dogs already altered by their previous owners before I brought them home. I know that Huskies are a resilient breed, but I just wanted to know what all you experienced owners think I should do. The previous owner is not willing to neuter him before I bring him home, and he is a free dog. I am willing to make the investment for my new companion, just thinking about his emotions on so much happening to him at once. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

| I personally do not think the neuter date matters since neuters are generally a very quick to point procedure. My male slept all day afterwards, and the next day he was back to his old self. If you feel it would be more beneficial for you and him, then wait. It may be easier to give it a week or so before you do the snip, but I'm not sure it will have a huge affect either way. As for advice; make sure you read the sticker and announcements. There are loads of very informative threads covering a wide variety of topics. Poke around the different sub topics as well; that's what I did when I first joined. Lots of good nuggets hidden in our forum . Don't feel afraid to ask any questions either . Good luck with your new boy! |

| I agree with Kelsey. I volunteer with a rescue program and right after the husky is pulled from the shelter, they go to the vet to get heartworms and stuff taken care of. If needed, then they get neutered/spayed within a few days. It will take your husky a few weeks to a few months to get used to you. It is all up to you. If he marks while he isn't neutered, you can get a belly band from a pet store to help keep that to a minimum. Thank you so much for rescuing. There are tons of helpful tips and information along this forum. |
