Subject: Howling in the car... Tue Oct 08, 2013 12:18 pm
I searched but couldn't find anything, so sorry if this turns out to be a repeat topic.
Siku is very good at directions. He knows when I start driving the car whether or not he is going to daycare, the dog park, hike or bike ride. All of these are in insanely different places, you take him there once, and he figures out where he is going next time. Anyway, about 3 minutes before that destination he just starts howling out of excitement and it always tends to be in my ear, and then that starts Nikolai. So I just have this car of howling huskies, and have to roll up my windows and people still stare. How do I make it stop!? Its not like I can pull over, wait till they stop and then continue.
I just can't take the excitement anymore in that small of a space.

This reminds me of a video that Melissa posted of her Kody.... I wish I could find it.
I'm sorry, I have no advice. I think it's hilarious though. You could blindfold him?

I might have to to blind fold him! It would be fine if it was like 30 seconds worth of a howl, but its like a full three minutes or more!
I video taped them probably a couple of months ago too. I will try to find it. Its ridiculous. Siku has like a normal husky howl, but Nikolai's is very weird, and deep and more of this weird groan almost, so its quite the combination they have going on.

Loki always sleeps. But the thought of you pulling over the car and stopping every time they start howling made me laugh. Have you tried just passing the place and keep driving until they stop?

That sounds like a good idea. Passing the place might work to cut them down to size. They think they know where they're going and then you blow their minds by not going there.
Kenzi whines when she's riding in the car anymore. She didn't used to. Thank God she doesn't howl and bark like yours. Her whining gets on my nerves enough as is. She's pretty good at understanding to hush up when I tell her, but it's never a long term fix. A few minutes later she'll be back to whining. I hope you can find something to get that howling under control.

Yeah, I might try that. Hopefully I won't be the car that has to pass the road 50 times before I can actually go down the daycare road!
And that isn't the only time that they are in the car to go places for them either. I mean they come on errands and stuff so its not always exciting when they get in the car to know they are going some where for them.

This one huh? I have to laugh. He did that ALL THE WAY to the camping trip, SIX LONG HOURS...LOL. I have one of Mya recently too, but I can't find it now. He has gotten better since this video, but still goes insane sporadically through the drive and then when we're getting to our "destination", holy cow he looses it. He knows when we're getting there too. Like when we're going to a meet up and I get off the highway...oh boy! Now he gets Asia going too and then they start aruging b/c she's telling him to shut up and it gets bad..lol.

I am dying, both of those videos are hilarious! I am so glad that mine don't last that long, so I guess I should be thankful because clearly it can be worse!
Here is a very short one of what my dogs do on the way to daycare. That weird background noise is Nikolai attempting to "howl". Not quite sure what his problem is, but its disturbing.
I also don't know how my search for car, didn't pop up with any of these!

Omg I'm dying with these videos! Haha, Nikolai sounds so strange.
Lycus only howls when I turn off the car and I'm not getting off fast enough to start getting him down.

Yes it can be WORSE!!!! Nikolai is really funny in the background! Jack will go for 5 min to as long as the car ride is, its been tested up to 3hrs.... A few people here have had the Joy of riding in the car with Jack and can vouch for me

Demon and Dakota are fine during the car ride, but once you pull into a parking lot and DAkota smells or sees other dogs all bets are off. She sounds exactly like Siku only slightly higher pitched.

THREE HOURS!
On long trips, Siku just goes through spurts, just to test out if he thinks we are actually almost there, driving over 36 hours when we move, should be a joy! I also have no idea why and when it really started, because he wasn't always like this when he was a puppy or anything.
Yeah Nikolai is in his own little world, I have NO IDEA what causes that sound to come out of him. That is always what it sounds like too, just this deep depressing tone.

Kay cries in the car, she did it the whole time on our way to Michigan. She won't cry if she's on your lap though...most of her crying is because she wants to be on your lap. xD I'll have to record Megan's and my pups sometime when we go to the dog park, they can get crazy.
Sophie whines in the car when she's not with her pack, lol.

All those videos!
I am so happy Mishka just lays down in the car and sleeps. When we get back home, I usually have to bribe him with a treat to get him out of the car otherwise he'll just stay sleeping in the backseat. I've left him in the car in the garage with the doors open so he can come inside at his own leisure.

So yesterday we went for a ride to go on our walk, and this is what ended up happening. It was awful, but I got a better video of Nikolai sounding like he was dying. Does anyone elses husky sound like this, ever?

Gosh, and I thought Kael was bad. Watching these videos makes me feel lucky. He was actually pretty dangerous at first because he'd jump back and forth between the back seat and the passenger seat. I just got him a line that keeps him tied up in the back seat, but I eventually want to get him a divider so that he can be loose back there. He just whines though. I kinda wish he'd howl, but he only does it very rarely when he's outside alone. D:

Oh I feel your pain, Link is HORRIBLE. Luckily he doesn't start until we're parked and I just sit there until he's quiet, he doesn't get to get out of the car until he stops But yeah, I get those stares too.
