Hi there

I just wanted to introduce to you the lovely Husky on the left, his Name is Anubis and like the user SiberianServiceDog I am training my husky as my guide dog.
We live in Germany and around here you earn nothing but hatred from the Husky communiy when you tell people that you are training a Husky as a guide dog.
I wil post the whole story of Anubis on the service dog section tomorrow, so stay tuned.

I'm glad you and Anubis joined! A lot of people react in a negative way when they first hear, saying it's "impossible" and that huskies are "not capable", but don't let them get you down. I think there is a lot of potential in a lot of the huskies out there if someone would just give them a chance...

My own experience has me thinking a Husky would be a perfectly capable service dog. I've taught one to walk alongside a wheelchair in a perfect heel and he down stays with such vigor that it sounds like his ribs will crack. This prejudice of which you two speak baffles me. Maybe because I don't roam around the Husky scene enough to ever get close to it.

Welcome and kudos to you for taking on the challenge of training your husky to be a service dog. I know of at least one Siberian service dog already so I know it can be done. It also takes a special person to put in the time and effort to raise and train a service dog so my hats off to both of you who are working towards it.

Although I don't agree with it, I have heard people say that huskies are unreliable due to their prey drive, wanderlust, and curiosity. However... just seeing my two when I focus them on obedience training, these dogs are MUCH happier with a job to do. Mushers trust their huskies with their lives daily during high peak snow season and through races like the Iditarod. I don't see why that same trust can't be applied to a husky as a guide dog

Well those people always bear on the standard of the Siberian Husky, but with that they can´t admit that their Huskies are nothing else then machines for them, that they can win races and think they are someone because of that.
On one hand they might be right, that the Husky is not reliable because auf phis strong prey drive and curioisity, but that´s only true when a Husky is off leash.
When working it is the same like when they have to pull a sled, I don´t think they are allowed to go after prey or sniff around the area when pulling it, so they would have to admit that a Husky can be reliable but they don´t.

Most dogs are not used for the original purpose they were bred for anymore, like the German Shepherd is originally a sheepdog so if you pretend on the standard of the Shepherd no normal family would be allowed to own one as a family dog. The same goes for many breeds.
Things and times change if there is a standard or not.

So enough of this, now I wil start to write down Anubis story.
