| Subject: Refusing Treats Outside During Training? Mon Sep 02, 2013 1:46 am | |
| It's been quite a while since I've last posted, but it feels good to be back lol Let's get right to it. Koda's about 2.5 yrs old right now, is pretty much a dream in the house (aside from pacing when bored or needs to potty), and I rarely have any problems with him. We've since moved to a new apartment with the gf and things have been pretty swell with us balancing the responsibilities regarding him. He's come to respect her more since she's the one feeding him and taking him out and such. He's super obedient inside, is eager to do his training, knows his boundaries and is a sucker for being overloaded with attention, but when we go outside things get a bit...different. Koda will absolutely NOT take a treat from me. Period. He won't look at it, sniff it, lick it-nothing. Put it in his mouth, he'll spit it out. He'll perform the task asked of him (sometimes with varying levels of enthusiasm), but won't take the treat for it. I've used every treat we have in the house right now and he still won't take them. Even the ones he generally likes really well right now (these dehydrated chicken, potato, banana, & apple pieces) he still won't take. If he completes the command, he'll do so generally without looking at me. It's almost like he'll go out of his way to avoid making eye contact, so we've started doing the "Watch Me" command to get him used to looking to me for instructions after a "Sit/Stay" to begin walking again. I've seen considerable success with this, as he'll look at me within 1-6 seconds after we stop walking or time to pee or w/e. I'd like to work with him while distractions are around, but I've got no idea on where to start to get us going. Any suggestions? Also, do to this issue, this makes rewarding desirable behaviors while walking (not walking ahead of me past my left leg) or giving corrections a bit difficult. We've had only two mini temper flare-ups while being corrected for things. Today we went running and he all of a sudden broke pace with me and took off ahead of me. I had been getting him adjusted to my pace multiple times, so I honestly was frustrated when I corrected him by a slight scruff grab (not hard, no pinch-just a grab). He did a low growl to which I answered, and when I released he snapped near (not at-he could've gotten me if he wanted) my arm. I pinned his leash to the ground and waited there for a few minutes, stopped the run and crated him immediately at home. Would this be him "testing" me? Oh and due to certain circumstances, he won't be neutered until February. All of his vet checks are completely fine, and I've had no scary behavioral issues to make this a cause for immediate worry. |
