| Yesterday I drove down to Connecticut and picked up my new boy. The shelter says he's 9 weeks old. His mom was a husky that was brought in pregnantand that his father might have been a border collie. He rode back really well (dozed off in my lap for half the ride, and dozed off in the backseat when he wasn't trying to get my sister's black lab to play with him--Levi the lab ignored the little one as being too small to play with). The cats are doing ok with him, and he with them. He's curious about them and wants to play, but since my cats don't run he's not chasing after them. He is learning to not get too close since they will swat at him. So far so good. Potty training is a challenge already, but we'll figure things out. At the very last, he slept in his crate with only a few (very loud) minutes of fuss and didn't have any accidents over night. We need to work on crate training during the day too. I haven't figured out a name for him yet. I'm considering: Sawyer (since he's from North Carolina, I thought of another pretty blue-eyed bad boy with that name). Jasper (from a Canadian national park we visited on our trip to Alaska where I fell in love with huskies), and Kaitoh (mysterious/phantom thief in Japanese, to go with his bandit-like mask around his eyes. He's got piercing ice-blue eyes and heavy black eyeliner around them. I'm open to naming suggestions. Here are a few pics of me and the boys playing yesterday:

Day two. I've decided on the name Shadow. for one, he follows me around like a little shadow, and 2, he has smokey shadow eyeliner. After a few minutes of uber whining, he settled down pretty soon for bed. Another round of whining at midnight, but he was otherwise calm, and went through the night without any accidents. I however, did not sleep a wink. The morning was a bit rough trying to feed all four animals and give Genji his insulin. And a little one who had so much energy. He had two more starts of accidents in the house, but an extended outdoor run session wore him out enough that he slept hard core all the late morning into the afternoon. In fact, he was so konked out, I was able to pick him up and put him in his den and my sister and I got ready to head out for some errands and he slept soundly through it all and while we were gone. There's been no accident since the morning. He's not asking to go outside when he needs yet, but he's learning that outdoors is potty place and I'm learning to get him out before he realizes he needs to go. He's also starting to learn Sit, and he and the cats are figuring each other out more. So far so good. After an extended play session before and after dinner, he seems to be zonked out again. He likes to sleep on his back with his legs all akimbo. and he likes the "den" of under my coffee table. I don't think that will last as he gets bigger, alas.

It was a rather whirlwind trip down to CT, play with two adoptable puppies, pick one, let him run around for the last time with his brother, and then head back north. I'll be back down in the area in a few weeks, since my parents are still living in the east middle of nowhere of the state. Shadow is still having a few accidents in the house (as expected of a young puppy), he puts up an ungodly fuss when the door to his crate is shut (though he settles down pretty well at bedtime, and he'll go into it easily enough, but otherwise its a huge, loud fuss), and he's a big ankle biter. On the other hand, he's starting to consistently learn Sit, and a few new tricks. We also started Heel/Walk today as we went up and down my street a few times. I keep him on the sand and grass and he follows along side me well. He doesn't push ahead very much but he does try to poke behind and/or nip at my ankles. I have currently worn him out for a little bit with the last walk and he's snoozing adorably at my feet. My sister and her dog have gone home now so it's down to just me, new puppy Shadow, and the cats Genji and Romeo. Before Levi the lab went home, we did get a chance to play down at the lake.

I love his dark goggles! Good luck with the heel training. If he's a typical husky, it's likely only because his little legs aren't long enough to keep up with your right now

Jasparr is now 13 weeks old and we're both settling into our new lives together very well. He's getting very big (compared to what he was 4 weeks ago, for certain!) He sits well, he looks well, and he's walking perfectly more often then not, with only occasionally pulling. He's doing ok with the cats. Genji is pretty fine with him, though gets exasperated when puppy is hyper and won't leave him alone. Romeo isn't getting along as well, though he is also getting used to Jasparr. We're walking 2x a day, morning at ungodly dark-o'clock (which is working better now that I'm not going along the dark and more sparcily populated dirt road and stick more to the main road where there are more houses--seriously, any tips for early morning walks in rural areas where there are bear, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and even mountain lions?) and a longer walk in the evening, both walks before his meals. For our afternoon walks, I've gotten to meet more of my neighbors in the past 3 weeks then in the past 2 years. He is the darling of the neighborhood. The first two weekends I had him we stayed home, but had lots of friends visiting, inclusing my sister's dog Levi whom Jasparr adored. The past two weekends I've driven down to my parent's house and he got to play with their dog Lucy, my uncle's dog Daphne, and then Levi again. He's been doing great meeting other dogs as well as people Yesterday, I took him out on a short hike down a trail in a local state forest. He seemed to enjoy himself quite a bit! anyway, enough gabbing, time for pictures! Week 10 and half: Jasparr with my cats, Genji (on the floor, white and gray) and Romeo (on the bookshelf, full gray) (play posture! The cats don't understand, but he keeps trying) Favorite toy evah! For the first few weeks, he didn't have much interest in his bed. He liked his own caves, and behind the chair was a favorite one. Week 12: At my parents house, playing with Lucy, their 12-ish year old Pointer-mutt. She's a funny little dog, so it was really nice to see them getting along and even playing together. Week 13: On the trail: Chewy bone! Dopey puppy has his ear inside out: And that's all for now! He can really wear me out and drive me nuts but I absolutely adore him and am glad he is in my life.
