PostSubject: FLEEEEAAAASSSS   FLEEEEAAAASSSS EmptyThu Aug 29, 2013 10:42 am

Ok so Jax has got the fleas, bad. I got him a flea and tick collar and also got some of the drops for the back....i even got the kill on contact shampoo. NOTHING IS WORKING!!!! He feels better after a bath with the shampoo but then they come back all around his groin area... I think its cause there are fleas in the house now, like on the couch and prob the carpets...So I am guessing that whatever I do he will keep getting them right away, What Can i do to get rid of these fleas once in for all...I was thinking about Bombing the house, That should take care of it right, I will put him out in the office for the day and close all the windows, bomb the house pretty good and then vent it out for a few hours...Then immeditly give him a bath when he comes in to get rid of the ones that are on him. I dont see how those drops on the back are supposed to do anything....but I spent like 30 dollars at petco on them....15 for the shampoo and like 5 for the collar, I have invested a lot of money in this issue and nothing yet. Please help

I'm not the most informed on this topic because I've never had this problem, but DO NOT BOMB YOUR HOUSE! Google natural ways to kill fleas from furniture and carpets. One trick is to sprinkle boric acid powder on the carpet and leave it on for 20 min, then vacuum it away. The boric acid will suck all the moisture out if the fleas and kill them pretty quickly

I have heard a lot of people use diatomaceous earth to treat the house inside and you can use it outside. I think not only for fleas but other bugs. It's perfectly safe to use. You can even dust the dog with it from what I've seen people say on the forum.

You need to clean the crap out of your house to try to vacuum as many fleas up as possible. And you'll probably have to vacuum like every day and just make sure to empty the vacuum after every vacuum so any fleas still alive can't come crawling out.

The fleas this year are worse than any year before it seems. I'm battling the same as you and having mild luck. I have covered our house in Dichotomous Earth (food grade), Nylar, she has had different type of flea drops put on, and we comb them off manually. I think the best thing that has cut down on the fleas the most is nylar and vacuum every day and I see a significant drop though still not fully destroyed. There are several threads to search that cover many ways to deal with them but the fleas this year seem to be laughing at all our remedies. Don't forget to treat the yard where your dog goes out. At my dad's house we can walk down the driveway and literally brush masses of them off our pant legs that's how bad they are outside there. It's the season of the super flea.

^ Wow. I'm glad that the fleas aren't that bad where I am. I couldn't imagine having to brush tons of them off of me. Eeek.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that it should be food grade.

This is one. I found some threads where you really only need about 1lb. It goes a long way. Definitely make sure you treat the yard as well.

Well if your going to bomb it anyway, why are asking for advise? If the dog has free roam then he will continue to bring fleas in and you will need to have some sort of repellant. If the Dichotomous Earth isn't working then try Borax. You can get it at Target, Walmart and most grocery stores. I used it to kill giant oriental roaches in my last apartment which was infested with them. It took about 10 days to kill the roaches, but I would imagine its much faster with tiny little fleas. You have to clean EVERYTHING with the borax. I actually love borax now because of it versatility. Its a great laundry boaster...

I wouldn't bomb the house,,,that residue lingers and can have consequences over time. Get some comfortis, wash everything in hot water and put DE all over the house.

I wouldn't do the fogger either. DE is much safer and you can apply it directly to your dogs coat too. I would use Capstar, but that's just me, along with a bath in Dawn dish soap or a flea bath if you prefer. To get rid of the fleas and flea eggs in your home you need to vacuum EVERYTHING. Vacuum the carpets, floors, and furniture. Really get into the furniture when you vacuum and don't forget to vacuum under and around the furniture as well. Everything that can be washed, needs to be washed...preferably in hot water and dried in the drier with as much heat as the articles can stand. That means you need to wash all bedding, human and dog bedding alike, pillows, sheets, blankets, towels, rugs, stuffed toys, everything that can go in the washer!  Also when you vacuum throw a flea collar into the bag or canister before you start and you will need to empty the contents of the vacuum each time you finish. I would strongly advise sealing off the vacuum contents before throwing it out. In the case of fleas I think it's easier handled with a vacuum bag rather than a bagless canister.  It's very labor intensive and time consuming to rid a house of fleas once infested which is why prevention is highly recommended and so much easier. Good luck, I would only use a flea bomb as an absolute last resort.

1. Get some Comfortis, like someone else said. You can only buy it at a vet and a dose is about $20. It'll last for a month, but you need to use it for 2-3 months to break up the fleas' life cycle. What sort of drops did you get for Jax? A lot of them don't take effect immediately (and I seriously doubt that most of them work, period) whereas Comfortis works in 30 minutes.

2. Take the flea/tick collar off Jax. Those things are nasty and dangerous. You can cut it up and toss it in your vacuum and it'll actually do some good that way. Right now, just vacuuming up the fleas doesn't kill them and they can get back out into your house, but if you put the bits of the flea collar in the vacuum bag, it'll kill the fleas.

3. Use DE like everyone's said.

4. Essential oils also help with fleas and ticks. And your dog smells spiffy. Here's a thread on it - https://www.itsahuskything.com/t4535p80-essential-oils-dogs

I would never ever use a bomber or fogger, for any reason. You have to literally clean every single surface of your house, remove any clothing/dishes/toys/etc before fogging, and probably cover your couch and stuff, or clean that really good before sitting on it. Not to mention having to let the house air out so you can get all the toxins out.

Someone dumped kittens on me this summer, complete with fleas, and my house got infested. My "routine" is a Comfortis, bath about an hour later in Neem shampoo (its flea shampoo, but not made with all the chemicals that are in most flea shampoos), apply essential oils to the collars, and vacuum with a flea collar. I follow up the next month with another Comfortis just to be safe. Works like a charm!

I feel your pain. Shaqua has NEVER had fleas and then, just this past Summer, she got fleas. Thank you Mississippi..... Argh. So she's on the flea pill, it worked pretty quickly.

I never thought of putting the flea color stuff in the vacuum. Interesting idea. I'm hoping moving to my new apt will take that out of the equation but who knows.... She may have been getting them from the dog park. Ewww...

This may work for larva (fleas in maggot stage), but nothing will kill a flea in the pupa stage that would be safe for indoor use. Temperature changes and vibrations make the flea "hatch out" of it's "cocoon".

You could just use a monthly treatment of fipronil, applied to the back.
Or any of the other wonderfully effective monthly treatments.
My dog has Flea Allergy Dermatitis. We live on an acre, and the dogs free roam, and go to parks, and see other dogs.
I havent had anyyy itching this summer. 6 dogs, no flea outbreaks.
Just saying.. A flea bath, followed by a monthly treatment...

I had a huge problem with fleas, I mean you couldnt walk into my house with out your feet and legs getting eaten up. Our apts had a lot of cats outside and they caused a big problem. Anyways I used Diatomaceous earth. I put it all over my carpet and I bathed my animals in it. the next day I vacuumed, and repeated. I did this for three days. GONE! this is the best stuff I have ever used!! and it is sooooo cheap!!! Nothing else worked for me because I had so many!! safe your you and your dogs. I would treat my apt once a month after that because how bad it was outside from all the damn cats they had roaming. I never seen it that bad and that stuff kept them away. Amazing product! Highly suggested!

^^ This works great for us. We won't use any chemicals on ourselves, and couldn't justify using chemicals on our dogs. The vinegar works great! We take the dogs on walks in the woods & different parks all the time and just spray them with vinegar first. No fleas on our pups this year! Good luck!
