In desperate need of suggestions, Husky keeps attacking Shih Tzu. Empty
PostSubject: In desperate need of suggestions, Husky keeps attacking Shih Tzu.   In desperate need of suggestions, Husky keeps attacking Shih Tzu. EmptySat Aug 10, 2013 6:43 pm

I have a 1 year old Husky named Loki, we also have a 2 year old male Shih Tzu named Tito, a 3 year old female Shih Tzu named Mia and a 6 year old poodle mix named Bam Bam.

When the Husky was 10 months old he started attacking Tito each time he got close or each time he tried to eat. We punished him with time outs and all. A week after it worked and he stopped. Now today out of nowhere he jumped on Tito, he wouldn't listen to us, I had to grab him from the back to pull him off. Tito now has 4 very bad bite marks, 2 on top of his head, 1 close to his eye and another close to his nose. Loki never attacks any of the other dogs, nor shows aggression to them.

My mother and sister want to give away the Husky, I really dont want to and I've been searching everywhere for suggestions. I really grew close to Loki, just like to my other dogs and I really don't want him to go, but I can't let him hurt any of the others.

Also the poodle mix is the only neutered male, I found something about neutering the Husky might help. Please, any suggestions are welcome.

Is the female spayed? What were each of the dogs doing leading up to the incident?

This really sounds like a high energy husky, although Ralph our Shih tzu / pomeranian mix does take the blunt of her energy when she is getting rowdy. After a quick run (I use rollerskates) or see if you can talk with your local high school and use their baseball field. This allows me to safely take her off the leash and hit some ball a few hundred feet while she will chase it.

The female isn't spayed, and the female and poodle were sleeping when it happened. I saw the male shih tzu went for a bite to eat when the husky came out of nowhere and jumped him. The only neutured one is the poodle, is that why he isn't being attacked?

I used to take him for walks everyday, but this past week a couple of stray dogs have appeared around the street and they attack dogs and people, i have notified dog catchers and all but they have done nothing about it.

Is the female in heat? That can cause male dogs to act out of character. I would definitely consider fixing ALL your animals.

Other than that, hopefully some other people with more experience with behavioral issues will chime in. You might not get as many responses though, this board tends to slow way down on the weekend, FYI.

She isn't in heat, she had puppies around 2 months ago and we check for that every week. I already have a date set to get the husky neutered. The two shih tzu's well they aren't mine, I have told my mother to do it but she declines so it's out of my hands. Right now my husky is set apart from the others since i don't want another attack and we have to keep the shih tzu's bites on check so they don't get infected or hurt but I don't know for how long i can keep him like that.

Ps. I have never been afraid of any dog, not even at how my husky looked earlier attacking my other dog, but a while ago he was tied to a tree in the backyard and the way he was standing with his back high, his head low, the way his eyes were staring got to me. His tail wasn't even wagging as usually when he sees me.

I think you need to find a way to exercise your Husky. Stray dog in the neighbourhood is no excuse as far as Loki is concerned. Go to a park, beach or something.

He is probably bored with heaps pent up energy and you have a house full of intact little dogs...

I hope this gets resolved before any further incidents occur or someone gets re-homed. I wish you the very best in discovering a positive outcome.

Yeah, neutering would be the best first option, I've seen neutering work wonders.
One of our customers has 3 Shih Tzus and 2 Huskies... The husband brought home their male husky about a year ago and everything was okay, he did play a little rough with the shih tzus but they would always be fine and even instigate play with the husky. The male husky was never neutered, and recently the rough play got too rough and their one shih tzu ended up losing an eye. Everyone told them to get rid of the husky, but they just got him neutered and there has been a great improvement.

Neutering will also help with calming down in general, being less agitated by other dogs, less territorial, and less likely to run away from home to find a girlfriend. My uncle had a gorgeous English Lab stud - but he would barge his way past people out the door and gate at every opportunity, and end up at any of the houses in the neighborhood that had girl dogs. This one particular Rottweiler owner had my uncle's phone number on speed-dial lol. My uncle did get him fixed, and the problem stopped.

She actually still could be in heat...it's not uncommon for bitches to be in hear only a few months father puppies.

Having intact males running around who are under exercised is going to give you problems. If you're keeping your Husky entire you need to make time to ensure proper structured exercise is given each day. Having intact females running around as well can cause further issues.

If possible, I would eliminate the free feeding and only have structured meals so there is no chance for an altercation over food which is a significant resource.
