I haven't gotten around to putting flea and tick repelling essential oils on our new pup Prince yet and sure enough I found a tick on him today. It's head was already really embedded in the skin so we weren't able to remove the head with the body since we couldn't grab hold of the head with the tweezers like we normally do to remove them. In short, we got the body off but the head is still embedded in the skin.

I have read lots of different things on the internet and am hesitant to try any of them because I honestly don't know what to listen to. I've read things from picking the head out with a sterilized needle like you would remove a splinter, to dousing the head in alcohol or vaseline to get it to let go, to leaving it alone and letting the body rid itself of the head naturally. I really am not sure what course of action to take or if any further action should be taken at all. As of now we cleaned the site where the tick head is attached with rubbing alcohol and then applied Neosporin.

Advice please? What would you do in this situation?

My experience is not very extensive. I just got Kronos a few weeks ago, and we've pulled like three ticks off him already. We use small needle nose pliers. I make sure he's calm and brushed out as much as possible. Then we (it takes two of us) spread his fur and then just pull it off. If the head is stuck down there, I would still try and get it out, even if it meant digging it out. Sorry this happened. Ticks are so bad this season I hear.

Just thought I'd update for the sake of anyone that might come across this in the future. I ultimately decided to leave the head in and let it scab over and fall off naturally which it did within a couple weeks time. Prince is just fine and no worse for the wear.

I have since stepped up my application of rose geranium oil and he hasn't picked up another tick. (Prior to the above mentioned tick I had not used any oils on him yet, my fault.)
