Have any of you had issues with ants in your pets food? Today is the first time I have seen them. They are super small like 1/8 the size of a regular black ants, and redish or light brown. I cleaned the dog bowl out and added food again. 20 mins later there were ants again. The first time it looked like hundreds or thousands. Second time was only ten or 20. I sprayed the doorway near the food with ant and roach killer. In between adding food and find ants the second time. Is it possible for the ants to be in the bag of food? I also moved the elevated dishes and cleaned the entire area with 409 cleaner. Any ideas on this? I tried the search function and had no results for ants. What a hectic week lol

It sounds like they could be in the food though most ant killer does take time to actually kill. Where do you store your food? How much time passed between spraying and putting food out? I would pour some food in a clean bowl and sit it somewhere else and see if you still have the ants. Or look through the bag of food with a good light and see if they are in the bag. _________________

I'm thinking it was just from being by the door. The new bowl for the pup which is inthe kitchen about 20 feet away did not have the ants. I have moved the elevated bowls and placed a paper plate with a small amount of food where the problem was happening. Going to check all three again in a while. If any of them have ants I'm going to guess its the plate I the original location. I emptied the dish the first time and within a few minutes I cleaned with 409 and added food again. Then went out and sprayed the door sill and the outside of the door. Went up each side a few feet and along the whole bottom and fromthe bottom of the door down to the steps. I don't see how anything can now come in if that's where they are entering. The spray I used started to kill a spider instantly. It started curling up and stopped moving within 10 seconds. Didn't see any ants on the floor when I was using 409 but its hard to tell these things are so small. I think I need to invest in a food bin. I normally just store the food in the bag it comes in. Going to wait another ten mintues and see if I can find any more. If not I will put the bowls back to their location and check later tonight. Have looked in the bag and didn't see any ad well. I tossed it around and let it sit will look again. Never had ant issues before, and hopefully spraying that door is all I needed to keep it from happening again.

Good luck. I hope it works. Ants are such a pain. I store kenzi's food in its bag too but am going to get a food bin. You never know when bugs will find an opening and take it, and once in they can be hard to get rid of. _________________

It has to be the location by the back door. Today after puttingthe food back to its not.sl spot I found about 4 or 5 ants at the rim ofthe bowl. Its way better than it was. In additon to cleaning with 409 I also used vinager on the floor to try and disrupt the ant trail. Need to check into a pet friendly indoor spray and do the whole perimeter of the house on the inside and the normal spray on the outside of the house. I will let everyone know the outcome in the next week or so.

Once again I'm wrong lol. Thought the ants were caused by the back door. Not so, I have had the raised dishes on the new location for some time now and low and behold the ants are back. Well I assume they are ants anyway. I only see them at the top of the food dish. None on the water dish and none on the plastic housing the elevates the dishes. I see no trail on the floor. I'm at boggled. I once again used 409 in the area. I then took the plastic housing outside and sprayed the inside with ant killer, wiped it all over the inside as the dogs can not reach this area. I then sprayed 409 on the outside just in case any of the ant killer got on there. Then before returning it to its location I took soap and water and washed the outside off completely as I'm sure 409 is not dog safe. Don't thing they would lick it but just in case.. once the food and water dishes were cleaned and placed back in the thingy I then took vinegar and rubbed around the bottom on the inside and outside perimeter..... What do I do if they come back? I have placed ant killer strips in areas the dogs can not get. Inside and outside as well as spray the exterior of my kitchen windows and doors. PLEASE HELP!!!! I feel so bad that my dogs may be ingesting these but I and not sure what else to do. Have checked many scoops of the food in the manufacturer bag and have not seen a single moving thing. I have never seen them before this bag of food though, and its the same that I have been giving maya well over a year. Any ideas? Thanks everybody

I would do that for sure but I can not find them anywhere else. Would think I would find them crawling elsewhere by the doors, or on the floor, counters, anywhere and I don't. Can I get recommendation on a decent food? Am using iams now but have read that its not a very good choice. Can't afford the super expensive stuff but, maybe like 50 or 60 a month or less. As for stores we are pretty limited. We have Walmart, tractor supply, farm and fleet, pet smart, and menards within 30 miles. Any other stores are a longer jaunt. Can I purchase a better food than iams in my budget and at those locations maybe? Or order online but I'm sure shopping would be outrageous.

There are lots of threads on foods, try the search to see if you can find some. I feed Merrick and Taste of the Wild. You might want to check your iams bag, they just had a huge recall.

Yea I seen the recall for salmonella, I will check the date code and lot number. Probably not the culprit but the salmonella may be worse than the bugs. I will check the search thanks very much!

If your using a raised feeder maybe wrap some double sided tape around the bottom of the legs that might catch anything trying to climb up the legs to the food, and if nothing is on the tape but you still have ants in the food bowl then I would vwnture to say their in the bag of food. I wouldnt leave food down for now either. Unfortunately ants love to eat dog food also and are attracted to it. Dont feel too bad about them eating some ants I know its kinda gross but I used to catch my last dog bug hunting outside all the time they never seemed to bother her. A cheaper alternative to a food bin is to get a garbage can with a flip top lid from walmart and put the bag in that for now, I know the actual pet food bins can be pricey I'm still waiting to get one. Or you can get a small table thats about 1 foot off the ground or a taller foot stool to put your bag on top of. Thats how they store the bags of flour oats sugar etc. at bagel shops and it keeps bugs away. Personally I either have my bag of dog food on the floor or I've been putting it on an old rolling desk chair that really needs to be thrown out and no problems so far. My grandmother uses a garbage can and hasnt had any problems. Good luck!

Oh great idea on the tape. I have tons of thin double sided tape and its by farthe stickiest tape I've ever seen. Will give that a shot. Can't believe I didn't think of that lol. Going to buy one more bag of iams and then I'm goingto try and change them to some other brand over the following weeks
