| Subject: cephalexin? Mon Jul 22, 2013 6:01 pm | |
| Nikolai has an infection between his toe on his left paw, we thought maybe something stung him or maybe something cut him. My vet didnt want to do antibiotics until we knew there was an infection so we were supppsed to keep an eye on it and come back if iy swelled up again. Well it was swollen so I called today and she prescribed cephalexin and a foot soat with this other medicine. Now im fine with the foot soak but curious abothe antibiotic cause thats nott my first choice. Has anyone had to have to use cephalexin on their dogs? Any good or bad outcomes? Or any other more natural ways yo help his paw? Any advice for help and i dont plan on starting it until maybe tomorow...
Also sorry for any errors, its on my cell! |

| My vet prescribed it for Luci when she had a staph flare up. However, she turned out to be allergic to it, so we had to switch her to Baytril. |

| Shadow had cephalexin for the UTI she had a few weeks ago, and she didn't have any issues with it. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Diamond had another infection flare up in her foot. She gets them periodically. We were prescribed cephalexin and it helped it clear up really quickly and without any issue. With any new medication you should watch for any reaction to the med. |

She vomited about a half hour after her dose. At first I thought she had gotten into something she shouldn't have, but after two days (4 doses), it finally dawned on me. I've used it before with other dogs with no issues. |

Thank you all. Luckily so far we have had good reactions to any medications that he has had so hopefully will one will be the same. I googled the medicine and saw some horror stories (as always) so this has made me a lot happier that you guys have had good luck with it to. |

| Cephalexin is pretty decent, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. If you are worried just make sure you add prebiotics and probiotics to the diet. |

| My dogs have taken Cephalexin in the past with no problem. My daughter has taken Cephalexin also on two different occasions for infection caused by an in grown toenail. Never had any issues with anyone or any dog taking it. _________________ |

| Kaia had an abscess between her toes they had to drain so be careful of trapped infection in the toe, she was put on keflex with no issues, she was originally put on a diff antibiotic but it gave her diarrhea, so make sure you watch your pups stools on an antibiotic. |

| Thanks again everyone! I just always like to check the medications, I love my vet but sometimes I feel like they hand stuff out like candy, when it isn't always necessary especially because it wasn't my normal dr. yesterday. But I gave it to Nikolai last night, and so far no problems and had a firm poop this morning.
Ashley, yeah we haven't had it drained yet because we kind of popped it again by accident before I called the vet, so he is going on the antibiotics and then we need to have a follow up on Saturday to make sure it is healing properly. |

| Yea we went once they looked at it and popped it. Then had to go back again when she ate thru the "no bite" dressing (which obv didn't work). But it healed pretty quickly. Hardest thing was getting her not to lick the area cuz it was itchy. |
