I want to re-fence in my yard but I was wondering if there was any particularly better fencing to use to help keep a husky in? I already plan to dig down and put fencing under ground but is a wood fence any better then the white vinyl? If I went with vinyl would the privacy vinyl be better then the bars?

Mostly any type of fence is fine so go with what ever you like or catches your eye the most.


You also might not even need to dig down and put subterranean fencing unless you really really have a motivated digger. Even then as long as you visually inspect your fencing semi frequently and look for possible holes you can catch some "Great Escape" holes and fill them in first.


Having extra, however, is never a bad thing so if you do plan on going that route it can't hurt. I know it goes without saying, but use something other than wood for any under ground fencing you do. Even pressure treated wood will just decay in the ground unless it isn't drained properly and/or pitched.



The thing to watch for is places your dog could possibly CLIMB the fence, or use as a launching pad to help jump the fence. Horizontal bars, or pickets, can be used to climb for some escape artists so finding a fence with as little of them as possible, or a fence that "hides" them behind other pickets are best.

In terms of height, you are looking to have at least 5ft off the ground and ideally higher. Your bylaws could restrict the height you are allowed, so check into that.

You also want something they can't tear apart easily or break....


I personally have a wooden fence I built with my wife and her father that is slightly above 5ft. We've never really had an escape, and the only time they've managed to get out of the yard was someone leaving the gate opened, or not closing it properly.

I was having such a hard time deciding what would be best but from what you said I think I'm going to go with a wood fence because there won't be any climbing ^.^

I might add that if you live in a place that has snow, you may want to check that it doesn't become too hard packed (either from you walking the perimeter or the dog(s) doing so or from freezing rain) because each snow fall tends to accumulate along fence lines and build up over the hard packed snow over the season. We live in Montreal and we certainly don't have the winters we used to but we still find ourselves shoveling the perimeters at times.

As for digging under the fence , it's only happened maybe 2 times from the moment we adopted her (and she was a wild child.....) but we found that *allowing* a spot to dig and not get told "NO!" helped a lot although the ensuing hole became fairly large (you could only see her tail and hind legs). We would periodically backfill it so she could enjoy the challenge once again

i have a 6 foot wooden fence surrounding our house and it's more than enough for us. it definitely depends on your dog. Ours isn't set too far underground and it works just fine. Although, Lycus is not a digger much, and he doesn't really try to escape in general.

As Chris stated, just about any of them will do, and it depends on what looks you like best and how much of an escape artist your husky is.

We did 6' chain link- we haven't had any issues with climbing thank goodness. I have had a couple spots I've had to drop big rocks or paver stones in thanks to the dogs chasing gopher runs under ground but no true escape motivated digging. It really depends on your dog and what you want and are comfortable with.

We are very lucky my husband builds fences for a living and this weekend he is finishing our new backyard fence. It is six foot wood fence with subterranean fence several feet down. We know this combination works for huskies because my mother-in-law got hers first and her kids are escape artists. Its built along the guidelines that we use here for alligator fences
