So this Saturday I just started Juneau and my foster on the Human Grade Fish Oil 1000mg capsules.

Call me crazy, but their fur already feels silkier and softer! Is my mind playing tricks on me, or are the capsules kicking in already? Holy cow, what a difference! I'm sure by the end of the week, both of their coats will be glossier too.

How soon did you notice a difference in your Sibe's coat?

I also wanted to thank this forum for the helpful advice towards a healthy and clean coat! Smile

I saw an initial difference in any dandruff and itching within a a few days - but real coat difference occurred after the first blow. It was totally different in texture.

That is awesome. I've been doing the whole feeding an egg bit but it's nice to know there's other things out there especially that works that well. I've heard that fish oil can make a person stink. I'm not sure the validity of that statement but have you noticed anything with your husky of that nature? Just curious.

Fish oil won't make you stink unless you rub it all over your body.

Make sure you give Vitamin E with fish oil - Fish oil naturally depletes the body's sources of vitamin E

Thanks for your input, Mbarnard0429!

Yeah, my foster husky has an airborne allergy (we think) so the itching has been minimized ever since I started the fish oil.

No, my huskies don't stink - except when they fart lol.

I will have to pick up some vitamin E. I almost bought it when I got the fish oil, but the fish oil was already like $16 (least I could get) lol so I put it back.

My hubby has to take fish oil every day for his heart and he doesn't stink any more than he did before (typical man smell lol). Maybe Karli can take fish oil with him...

I know there are so many topics on this sort of stuff, but is there any specific type or amount of fish oil and vitamin E oil that you give your dogs.

Also if you are giving fish oil and vitamin E, do you still give coconut oil or is it an OR variable.

So if you start supplementing with fish oil and vitamin E, you don't supplement with coconut oil as well because that will just be too much on their system?

This is the first time I've ever done anything like this and I want to make sure I'm not over doing it.

Thanks, Megan!

I want to start Mishka on fish oil and vitamin E but I didn't want to overdue if I kept giving him coconut oil too. I'm glad you can still give both.

I take it you give them capsules. Human grade is okay? I'm going to see if I can find some that are less than 1000mg if not then I may just get the Grizzly brand salmon oil and try that until I know he can handle higher dosages.

Hello!

Just doing some research on fish oils. Megan, you mentioned that you only use the NOW brands. The 1000mg Salmon Oil says it has natural vitamin E in it already, do you give extra vitamin E just in case?

This is the link where i plan on buying from. Any help you can provide would be great! Thank you!

You could also include a fish protein based food instead of supplements. My female was mainly on fish protein foods while I was trying to figure out her tummy sensitivities and have always been commented on how soft her coat was. When I finally made a transition to venison, I noticed a difference in her coat and coat blow. Since I've incorporated fish back in her diet and her coat is soft and silky again.

When we adopted Storm, his coat was so thick and very coarse. Since he had to go on a diet, fish protein based foods are typically less in calories, and after his first coat blow with us, his coat has made a big transformation.

I do not supplement any fish oils but I make sure both of diets have a fish based protein food that make up 50% (i.e. 50% THK Zeal, and the other 50% is dehydrated venison and/or chicken), and a lot of their treats are dried/dehydrated fish (i.e. salmon skin rolls, white fish jerky, freeze dried fish, etc.).

okay a dumb question about giving them fish oil- do you break the capsule into their food or how do you incorporate it properly? Also i notice a lot of you on here also use eggs in their diet to help the coat. How would i go about incorporating that as well in a way that she wont get sick? do they eat one every day? do you mix it with their food? I'm not doing raw but i notice kiba has irritated skin (but no fleas or any buggies) and i want to figure out a way to help relieve it.

Moto1087, do you supplement with vitamin E as well?

Claudia, Gus is still on a puppy diet (the Orijen Large Breed Puppy). I plan on switching him to the Six Fish diet once he's a year old. My vet said they can stop eating puppy food after a year old. (Any thoughts on that? haha sorry... a bit off topic)

i dont currently but am going to here when i get time to run up to the store, i wanted to start with fish oil and see how she did on taking the pill which has been great.

everyone you talk to will have a different time for when to stop feeding puppy food, some dont feed puppy food at all. i would say you can switch when ever you feel comfortable doing so. Rikku has been on fromm gold puppy up until this week. we have two dogs and a cat and trying to buy three different kinds of food has become a hassle. so rikku started an all ages food this week. she seems to like it just the same. i believe the only real difference is a higher fat % and more calories in puppy food vs dog food (rikku is 4 months)

Thanks for the input! Gus had giardia for 1.5mths, and lost a lot of weight from having constant diarrhea. He's about 8mths now and only 46lbs, so we'll probably keep him on the puppy diet for awhile until we get his weight up.

For the egg, you crack it open in their food and throw the shell in and everything. You can mix it up or just throw it on top. Smile I give him a raw egg about once a month. They are not likely to get sick from a raw egg like we would.

Mishka will pick out some of the egg shells but he eats most of them. I still need to get some fish oil and vitamin E. I still haven't gotten around to buying any. *facepalm*

As far as the pills/capsules, I throw his medicine on top of his food or in my hand with a treat and he just vacuums it up like it's food. Thankfully he's so into downing his food he doesn't notice it at all. He's never picked it out of his food. I'll be doing the same with the fish oil and vitamin E.

would it hurt if i threw in an egg like once a week or should i try just once a month? like on sundays we cook breakfast at the house would it be fine to just start throwing an egg in for the pup too?

you put the she'll in and all? its not bad for them?

The shell is a good source of calcium for them. Yep, I break the egg in his food and just mix it up shell and all. Very Happy

You can try once a week. I don't see the harm in it. If you find his BMs changing then I would cut back on how often you feed it, maybe every other week instead of every week.
