Hey all,

Athena is 10 months and doing well. I just wanted to check and see if other huskies were what I like to call grazers with their food. Some days she will gobble up her breakfast or dinner and others she will graze on it for a few hours - meaning she will eat a little bit, come back and hour or so later and eat some more, and then even an hour or so later come back and finish her bowl.

When we go to work in the morning and she is in grazing mode, we typically put it up so she doesn't have to go to the bathroom while we're gone. However, on the weekends we will just leave her food down for her to graze on.

Any thoughts on this? Good or bad? Normal or abnormal?

I'm dealing with this same question, so hopefully someone can help us both out. Been thinking of getting some wet food for his kibble. But I have my other dog on this kick and it is an expensive kick. He is obsessed with her food, but I have to keep him away from it since it is prescription diet ID (definitely not good puppy food).

My husky is a graze eater. I leave her food all day and she eats when she feels like it. Whether she eats all at once or a little at a time depends on the day. Hot days she will pick at it and days she's played hard or had a lot of stimulation she tends to eat all at once. Day grazing works better for single dog house holds.

With multiple dogs I would just offer food for 5 or 10 minutes at a time and if they don't eat in that time put it up until later. My husbands dog used to be a pain about eating and we got where we gave her one chance a day to eat and if she didn't take it she didn't get another chance until the next day. Sometimes she would go a couple days but she would eventually eat. I've never seen a dog, not even a picky dog, choose starvation over dry kibble of any kind. We used to add a little water with our kibble to gravy it up for a bird dog we had. She thought she was getting wet can food even though it was still the same thing and she ate it better. Good luck with your pups. They will eat, just keep on offering.

Huskies also tend to skip meals occasionally so if she's not eating it all, that's fine. With Karli it just depends on whether she wants it or not, some days she eats all of it, others she just picks through it throughout the day. Although if I put it in her Kong wobbler and she has to work for it she's more inclined to eat it.

Thanks for the feeback everyone. Makes me feel more comfortable that other huskies do the exact same thing Athena does!

My 2 y/o has done this since day 1. He will also pick pieces out of his bowl and take them to his 'hiding spot' (usually under his blanket in his crate) to eat later! Some days he eats it all and some days he may only have a couple mouthfuls.
We tried training him early on by only giving him his food at certain times and he wouldn't eat at all -_- So we just let him graze and he's fine!

Kenzi does this save for later stuff too kinda. She gets a mouthful and spits it out in the middle of the room then goes back and eats the rest of her food, only she won't eat the mouthful later. It's just sitting in the middle of the floor until I get fed up and toss it back in her bowl. It could sit there for days if I didn't do something about it. I don't know if she's religious and it's a offering to the doggy gods or what.

Hilarious! We give Athena a mixture of the Orijen 6 Fish and the Orijen Adult. Sometimes she will grab a mouthfull of food and spit out the flavor that she doesn't want to eat that day! I will find pieces of either the 6 Fish or the Adult laying around her bowl that she doesn't want to eat!

I have also found that when the weather is hotter, she tends to graze more and eat less.
